Katana

Chapter 20

The two wolves fought with dominance. Dominance was established through their stance, their snarls, and baring their teeth. It was a clear view of the animals that lives inside of them.

Kieran managed to swipe his claws at Thaddeus’s stomach. He whimpered and fell back in surprise. Kieran took the opportunity to snap his jaws around his neck, a clear silent order for him to submit. Thaddeus snarled and turned his head to snap at Kieran’s throat—unrelenting. Kieran had to release him and Thaddeus pounced on Kieran; snarling in Kieran’s face, drool dripped from his mouth while he stared at Kieran.

Kieran’s hind legs came up and kicked Thaddeus off, as he rolled back onto his feet. Again the two continued to attack each other. The result of their perseverance was open clawed wounds, bleeding bite marks, the ground began to drench in their blood.

Although they were becoming weak, the two refused to back down. Thaddeus wanted Kieran’s submission but Kieran’s strength and power matched Thaddeus equally. Kieran wasn’t going to go down easily and if Thaddeus persist, it will be a fight to the death because both were unwilling to lose.

It seemed to be hours and the others stood around watching, wanting to intervene but no one dared to interrupt this fight. In the air, you can hear the snarling and vocalization of their wolves as they tried to dominate each other.

Katana pushed away from Xavier. She stood weakly as she looked at her mate. The blanket still wrapped around her shoulder. A part of her wanted to intervene but she knew it will not be a good decision on her part. Her wolf paced inside her head, wanting to tear Thaddeus ’s throat.

“Katana, we can’t interrupt the fight.” Xavier made sure she knew. She whipped her head in his direction him and glared.

“Of course I know! It doesn’t mean I like it. I don’t want him to fight for me!” She snapped in anger.

“He is the only one that can.” Xavier said.

She turned back to her mate and prayed that he wins this fight. Her heart won’t be able to take it if he got hurt or worse. It didn’t take long before everyone noticed they both were getting tired and exhausted.

“Thaddeus, let him go! I am the one you want! I am the one who entered into battle.” Katana couldn’t help herself. She made an attempt to step in but Xavier grabbed her and held her back.

“Katana, you fought for what you believe in. Now allow him to fight for what he believes in.” Troy spoke as he also held her down. She looked up at him in panic but knew he was right. Kieran had to do this.

Blood now coated the ground and Thaddeus had Kieran pinned down to the ground.

“Thaddeus!” Ruth’s voice pierced the air. Thaddeus’s eyes moved from Kieran to his mate. She held a dagger in her hand and pointed it at her heart.

Kieran snapped down on Thaddeus’s jaw, taking the opportunity to hold on as tight as he can. Snarling he ordered for Thaddeus to submit. Thaddeus growled and struggled to get out of Kieran’s clutch but Kieran needed Thaddeus’s to submit. He didn’t want to kill his uncle because again he was not power hungry.

“Thaddeus!” Ruth’s broken voice screamed again. “You have to stop. Let this go. Submit.”

It sounded like an order but it was a plea from Ruth to her mate. Thaddeus submitted a second too late. Ruth couldn’t stand it any longer. Her mate was stubborn and too prideful. He couldn’t let it go and with that she pierced the dagger into her chest. Thaddeus roared his pain. Kieran wanted to let him go and check on his aunt but he had to make him submit.

Thaddeus’s struggle to go to his mate was futile. Kieran held onto him tightly. However, it was in this given moment that Thaddeus finally understood what he really needed in life. His legs gave out and he vocalized his surrender. Kieran released him immediately and he bounced onto his feet as he ran to his mate.

The air changed. The shift in power has been given to Kieran.

He was now the Alpha King.

Thaddeus didn’t seem to notice or give a care. All that was on his mind was Ruth who collapsed onto the cold grassy ground. He needed to get to Ruth. He ran quickly to her side. Shifting in the process he held her in his arms with one hand firmly pressed to her chest. His body was riddled with open claw and bite wounds. Blood seeped from his skin but it didn’t hurt as much as seeing her in pain. Her eyes flickered open to her mate when she felt his arms wrapped around her body and for the first time she saw tears running down his cheeks. Her mate never cried but she knew that deep within him there was some good.

“You gave up for me.” She whispered weakly.

He sobbed like a baby. “Because I love you. I might’ve been blinded then but you mean more than anything to me. My love for you is the only pure thing inside of me. Without you I am nothing. I can’t lose you, Ruth.”

Her bloodied hand came up to touch him, causing a streak of red to paint his cheek. She wiped away his tears and he clutched her to his chest.

“I knew you were a good man, Thaddeus. I never gave up.” She whispered into his chest. She coughed up blood. His heart literally stopped upon seeing this.

“Ruth, please stay with me. Don’t leave me.” He pled and cried like a baby. He buried his face in her neck.

“People told me you were bad, selfish, and heartless-“She coughed some more blood and her eyes fluttered close a little before she opened them weakly to look at him from underneath her eyelashes. “But how can you be heartless when every night you hold me to sleep. Every night I hear your heart beat as I lay safely in your arms. I wake up every morning to a note from you. I see things they don’t. I couldn’t give up on you.”

His heart felt like it was being ripped apart. How can he allow this to happen? He was so consumed in jealousy and power he didn’t see what the Moon Goddess has given him. The only thing that kept him good all this time and she was bleeding out in front of him.

Her heart rate began to slow. Kieran appeared at Thaddeus’s side. He had on a pair of shorts and tossed one pair at Thaddeus.

Kieran moved to remove Aunt Ruth from his uncle but his uncle held onto her tighter.

“We need to take her to the medical wing. She needs help that you and I can’t do anything about. She is losing too much blood, Thaddeus. Let her go. Let me carry her and you can follow me.” Kieran reasoned.

Thaddeus’s eyes cleared up a little as he realized that Kieran was right. He handed over his mate to Kieran who scooped her up and zipped into the palace. Xavier helped carry Katana back into the palace now that it was now safe for all of them.

As everyone hurriedly attempt to save Ruth’s life, they completely have forgotten one little detail.

Out in the werewolf nation, werewolves who were sleeping oblivious to the defeat that happened within their nation were stirring slowly awake when they felt the shift in power. Soon there will be calls, the nation will question what happened and werewolves will seek to meet their new King and Queen.
