Chapter Chapter Thirteen
Flint refused to let Eve out of his sight until she had eaten three plates of sausage and bacon. He ate breakfast as well, but he was much more occupied in watching her. Eventually, Eve was left alone to shower. Little did she know, Flint was sitting on the bed watching the crack in the bathroom door. He was making a call, one he hoped would be fruitless.
"Alpha?" Joshua answered the phone.
"I need to know what you found about that legend you talked about. The thing about the power." Flint skipped any greeting.
"Of course. I spoke to the oldest member of our pack, Alaina. She remembered more about it than I did." He could be heard pulling himself into his wheel chair.
Flint waited patiently for the old wolf to speak again.
"With each new generation of Alpha, their power is stronger than the last. That's natural. But if the same bloodline is in power for too many generations, their level of strength will be unfathomable." Joshua spoke in a grim tone.
"So he'll be strong. That's a good thing." He breathed in relief.
"Not exactly. Listen, boy." The elder took a deep breath. "Too much power can be deadly. You already struggle to contain your beast and Selena grew weak during her pregnancy with you."
"What are you saying? Speak clearly." Flint replied sharply.
"I know only parts and pieces. This legend comes from Selena's people. The SilverCrest Pack. They'll know more than we do." Joshua spoke in a calm tone, as if he expected this reaction.
"I will contact their Alpha. Keep digging. Call me as soon as you hear something." He hung up the phone abruptly.
The bathroom door opened, reveling a curious Eve. She had a towel coiled around her golden locks and she wore a pair of dark jeans with a burnt orange t-shirt.
"What's wrong?" She probed knowingly.
"Pack business." Flint stood an approached her.
"You're lying to me. Why?" Eve could feel the worry in his chest.
"I just need to talk to the SilverCrest Alpha. Everything is okay." He placed a warm kiss on her forehead.
"Okay..." She decided to let him get away with a small half-truth.
Eve combed her hair before putting her makeup on. She pulled on her brown vest and her shoes. All the while her mate watched her attentively.
"Come on. Get dressed. We have to go." Eve hurried him along.
He chuckled and gathered an outfit to wear.
"Are you sure you don't want to go back to GreenTree?" Flint probed as he climbed into the shower.
"I'm sure. The quicker we get to Summerville, the sooner we can go home." Eve answered him from the open bathroom doorway.
Flint showered quickly before shaving and brushing his teeth. He pulled on a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. When he brushed his hair Eve's eyes were drawn to his glistening, dark strands. In the time they had been together, he had somehow become more beautiful to her.
"Are you ready?" He asked as he tied his shoes.
"Yup. Let's ride." Eve nodded.
They found themselves on the highway, headed toward Summerville, in just a few minutes. However, the drive there would take at least half an hour. It was already midmorning, so Eve hoped the Taylors' flower shop would be open by the time they arrived.
When they were twenty minutes into their drive, Flint's phone rang. He pressed a button on the radio, answering the call through the car speakers.
"Dolan." He stated simply.
"Alpha. Do you have the time for an update now?" Blair answered.
"I wouldn't have answered if I didn't. What do you have for me?" Flint replied simply.
Eve nudged his shoulder, silently telling him to be nicer. He just smiled and rolled his eyes at her.
"Joshua and Mr. Dolan have everything under control on the pack front. I have no issues to report. However..." She paused as if deciding how to continue.
The Alpha couple could feel that the assistant's hesitance was due to nervousness. She had bad news and she didn't want to reveal it. Flint opened his mouth and Eve placed her hand on his forearm, quieting him.
"Blair, it's Luna Eve. Just tell me what's going on." She interjected in a calming tone.
"It's about Alpha Daniel of NorthWood. I called his assistant to set a meeting with him." She slowly explained.
"And?" Flint asked quickly.
"Alpha Daniel refused to meet with us. He has called for a summit gathering of all the packs instead." Blair spoke hastily as if she were removing a bandage.
"Did he give a reason?" The Alpha gripped his steering wheel tightly, trying to hold in his frustration.
"The Alpha didn't. I called Mark back though, he had more to say." She rambled in a quiet voice.
"Who the hell is Mark? And why are you mumbling at me?" Flint's probing nearly sounded bark-like.
The annoyance radiating off of him was palpable to everyone hearing his voice, but it was strongest to Eve. She found herself trying not to allow his anger to become her own.
"Mark is Daniel's assistant." Eve placed her hand on Flint's knee, hoping to calm him before she turned back to the radio. "What did he say?"
"He said NorthWood has been suffering their own rogue attacks in Dayton. Four so far. The attacks didn't start until after the HillCreek treaty and the move. I made sure." Blair explained in a voice slightly louder than before.
"Was the treaty mentioned directly?" Flint asked flatly.
"Not by me. Mark did. Daniel has never supported it." She answered.
Flint's frustration skyrocketed. Eve clenched her fists. Her mate's emotions were flooding her senses. She couldn't think. Flint saw this out of the corner of his eye. He took a deep breath and watched her, allowing silence to reign for a minute.
"Who-" Eve paused. "Do you know anything about the rogues attacking them? Names or affiliations?"
"Mark didn't say anything but I'm sure he knows more than he told me." Blair answered.
"Find out what you can from your NorthWood contacts. I will do the same." Flint stated.
"Yes, Alpha." As the assistant spoke, Flint hung up the phone.
He turned to his mate, watching her intently. Eve took several deep breaths before meeting his gaze. Flint parked in the parking lot of a small store with a yellow awning. Printed in quirky, red letters was the name "Wild Flowers". The image of what seemed to be a red daisy separated the words beautifully.
"We're here." Eve acknowledged.
"Are you okay?" Flint ignored her observation.
"Yeah. I just..." She let the sentence trail away.
"My emotions overwhelmed you." He stated knowingly.
"I think it was the combination of yours and mine." Eve explained quietly. "I've been sensitive to the mindlink lately too. My feelings have been harder to control."
"Okay. The doctor said the pup could make you more perceptive to the mindlink. And me along with it." Flint took her dainty hands into his palms tenderly.
"She also said you could be more emotional too." The Luna nodded.
"Exactly." He kissed her knuckles. "You're feeling okay now?"
"Almost perfect." Eve smiled.
"Almost?" Flint raised an eyebrow at her.
"I can think of one thing that I'm missing." She looked toward the sky as if pondering something.
"Oh, really?" He smiled at her theatrics.
"Maybe you can help me find it?" Eve turned to him with a playful expression.
Flint's hand cupped the back of her neck and abruptly pulled her toward him. The electric current of his touch was all Eve needed to feel like herself once again. Flint absorbed her taste as her warmth flooded his veins, calming his every worry. He leaned his forehead against hers when he pulled away, unwilling to leave this moment behind.
"Are you ready?" He reluctantly asked.
"Whenever you are." Eve sighed.
"Then we'll go in just another minute." Flint kissed her again.
Eve laughed against his lips. Having a heightened connection to the pack was what she had expected. However, Flint's emotions were different. Now that she was feeling them more clearly, she realized just how powerful they were.
The fact that he wasn't an animal all the time was truly a testament to his strength. Eve has seen that first hand. However, what she hadn't explained was the feelings of her own wolf. The she-beast had fought for control and lost. No matter who won the battle, the fact that it happened was troubling to Eve.
She had always possessed the ability to contain her inner animal. The thought of losing that control, even a bit, was frightening to her. Still, she let Flint's warm taste and constant love reassure her. If her mate could hold back his inner beast, Eve thought for sure she could do the same.
