Chapter Chapter Twelve
Eve was nervous the entire visit. Finally, after an exceedingly long time, came the part she was excited for. Doctor Gant asked her to lay back and pull up her shirt. Eve felt slightly uncomfortable with this, seeing as to how Bastian was watching her. Still, she exposed her stomach.
After spreading a very cold gel on her round stomach, he placed the ultrasound want on her skin. He pushed into her belly a bit and the screen on the cart beside her came to life. She could see him. Her pup. He was beautiful. There was something behind him but all Eve could do was stare at his face.
The heartbeat began to pound through the speakers of the machine. Eve smiled. From the corner of her eye, Bastian grabbed her attention. His eyes were alight with the thought of possibility. The expression made her anxious.
"Both babies are doing great." The doctor stated.
Eve felt like someone threw a bucket of ice water on her. Bastian's mouth fell open. Even he couldn't hide his surprise at the doctor's words.
"Excuse me?" She grabbed Gant's arm. "Both? Why did you say both?!"
The doctor smiled at Eve and turned up the volume on the machine. There were two heartbeats. She just thought this noise was some kind of technical echo. He pointed to the monitor and began to move the wand around. Slowly, another baby came into sight. It was smaller, but just as beautiful.
"T-twins?" She breathed as her eyes burned with tears.
"Yes. Do you want to know their genders?" He grinned.
"Yes." Bastian stepped forward.
"The most visible one is a boy. Your other baby has their legs up, so I can't tell." Gant replied.
Eve's heart was thundering in her chest. Two. Two babies. If carrying one Dolan child nearly killed Selena, what would carrying two do to her. Her mind was jumping around. If they were both boys, they would have to fight one another for the Alpha title. If they survived to be born at all.
"I'll print you a copy of the image." He began pressing buttons on the machine.
"Can I have a few copies?" She asked.
The doctor nodded while Bastian looked at her curiously.
"Onyx will want one. You probably will too." She whispered.
Bastian nodded as if she were being reasonable. Eve cleaned off her stomach and pulled her shirt back down. Her mind was full, but none of her thoughts were helpful. Actually, they were gloomy and dark.
The thought of Flint not being there was painful to her. Very painful. However, Bastian had gotten the confirmation he wanted. Eve was indeed pregnant with a boy. Possibly two boys. What would he do with twice the power? Twice the leverage? Eve was afraid to find out.
The doctor gave her the images and made her another appointment. He claimed, by that time, he would have the results of her blood test. As Bastian led Eve back to the lobby, she tried to ignore the pain in her chest. Twins. She was having two pups, not one. And Flint would have no idea.
Onyx smiled at them and opened the door for them. Eve casually dropped one of the sonogram photos on the sidewalk. She left it behind without even glancing at it. Once in the truck, a turbulent conversation began.
"What's wrong?" Onyx probed worriedly.
"Twins." Eve handed her one of the ultrasound photos.
The teenager's mouth fell open in shock. She examined the image carefully, before she was able to shake off the surprise.
"Oh, no..." Onyx breathed.
"Yeah..." The Luna nodded.
Bastian started the truck. He was being oddly quiet. There was a small, content smile on his face that bothered Eve to no end. Bastian drove out of the parking lot, toward the cabin. As they moved away, the Luna saw a woman in a purple jacket stop by the entrance of the doctor's office. She knelt down and picked up the image Eve had dropped.
"What does this mean for the Alpha power?" Onyx asked in a concerned tone.
"The Alpha power is different than the power in the Dolan bloodline." Eve thought aloud. "Carrying any child of Flint's would be dangerous, male or female. Now that we know for sure there is one Alpha..."
"Everything is going to be okay." Bastian stated with certainty.
"How can you say that?" Onyx glared at him. "One Alpha pup was killing her. Now we know there are two. How on Earth is that okay?"
"There have always been two pups, right? We just didn't know. Now we do." He grinned. "Evie's already almost at her due date. She's carried two pups nearly to term. She's stronger than any of us thought. Maybe she can-"
"I can't." Eve interrupted him. "I'm not strong like that, Bas. The power is getting stronger, but not me. I'm getting weaker."
The space fell silent. Eve knew her statement was true. She just had never acknowledged it out loud. Bastian glanced at her with an unreadable expression. Onyx took her hand, hoping to comfort her.
"You and the pups will be fine, Evie. I promise." Bastian stated in a low tone.
"Be careful, Bas. You're making promises you can't keep." Eve replied evenly.

Anna couldn't hear the conversation between Eve and the doctor clearly while in the air conditioning ducts. She was listening to the audio recording she'd made, as she circled the building. She saw something small and white in front of the door.
The specialist watched the truck back out of its parking spot before approaching the entrance. She bent over and picked up what she first thought was a note from Eve. The recording playing over her ear buds made her freeze in place.
"Both babies are doing great."
The doctor's voice in her ears made her pause. She then flipped over the object in her hand. It was an ultrasound photo depicting a set of twins. Her heart began pounding in her chest. She turned and hurried down the street. Anna had been camping just outside of town.
She wanted to get back as soon as possible. She hoped to send a report directly to her Alpha. She thought if he saw the photo and listened to the recordings himself, he would have less questions for her. However, before she managed to get off the main street in town, her phone rang.
"Hello." She answered the device as she rushed forward.
"What happened?" Flint's deep voice didn't bother greeting her.
"The appointment-"
"I know. I've been waiting for an update. Something happened. I want to know what." He demanded answers.
"Yes, Alpha." Anna nodded, fastening her pace. "I'll email you the recording of the appointment. Luna Eve saw me. Bastian didn't. She dropped an ultrasound picture for me to find."
"When will I get that report?" Flint asked hastily.
"Ten minutes, Alpha." Anna began running.
"I'm waiting." He stated before hanging up the phone.
