Chapter Chapter Eleven
Eve was excited, but she couldn't show it. Bastian had agreed, very reluctantly, to make Eve an appointment at the doctor's office in Kirkwood. Today, she would get the chance to leave Shadow pack territory.
Even though she would be highly supervised, Eve was thrilled. She knew Flint had found her. Her mate knew where the cabin was located, as well as where Kirkwood was. Even if Flint recognized that he couldn't rescue her yet, Eve knew there would be some StarLight support in the small human town. Her mate wouldn't leave her alone.
Eve pulled on a large, long sleeved t-shirt and a pair of stretch pants. Onyx loaned her some make up so Eve could cover the dark circles under her eyes. Simply wearing eyeliner made Eve feel more like herself. She tried to pull on her boots but her ankles were swollen.
Now, Eve wore an old pair of Leigh's tennis shoes. She and Onyx were standing on the porch, waiting for Bastian. The rogue Alpha pulled up in front of the cabin and parked. He drove the old, beat-up truck that he'd used to kidnap Eve. He climbed out and approached, helping Eve climb into the seat.
The Luna tried to look as calm as possible as the trio headed toward the small, human town of Kirkwood. There were dirt roads and gravel paths until the main street came into view. Small stores with large windows lined the road.
There weren't many people wandering around but those that were glanced at the truck as it passed them by. The doctor's office had a light blue sign with a stethoscope on it. It simply read 'Family Practice of Doctor Marshall Gant'. The building itself looked like an old, one story brick house.
Bastian and Onyx helped Eve climb out of the truck. There were two elderly woman on a bench nearby, watching them. To Eve's surprise, Bastian smiled at them. They returned his expression, waving calmly.
"They like you here." She noted quietly.
"What can I say? I'm likeable." He smirked.
Bastian placed his hand on the small of her back, sending waves of static through her veins. They walked toward the door but something caught Eve's attention. Movement at the corner of the building. She glanced up, before pausing in place.
Eve saw someone's familiar cocoa skin tone and many long braids. It was Anna Delanie. She was wearing a large purple jacket, with a hood over her hair. Their gazes met for a second, before the specialist ducked out of sight. Eve looked around to see that both Bastian and Onyx were watching her curiously.
"Sorry, I got lost in thought." Eve commented.
"It's okay to be nervous, Evie." Onyx whispered.
The Luna nodded and continued walking. She glanced back to where she'd seen Anna, but the warrior was gone. When they walked inside, they were met by an empty lobby. The girl behind the desk was chewing her gum with her mouth open.
"Appointment?" She sighed without looking up from her phone screen.
"One o'clock for Lawler." Bastian leaned on the counter.
The young woman looked up at him and he smirked at her. Her cheeks flushed red immediately. Eve glanced at Onyx, who rolled her eyes. Bastian was attractive. He knew this and, apparently, he would use it to his advantage every chance he got.
"I-I see you here. Go on back." The girl stammered.
He thanked her and took Eve's hand. She wanted to pull away, but she knew better than to act out in public. There was no telling what Bastian would do. Eve was just happy to be off Shadow Pack land, if just for a short while.
Onyx sat in a chair by the door as Bastian led the Luna down a short hallway. They entered the exam room and Bastian pushed the door closed. Eve turned to him, awaiting instructions or rules. None came. He simply smiled at her, as if he had no cares in the world.
Anna, on the other hand, had found a way into the duct system in preparation for the appointment. She was getting into place above the patient room. She had already drilled a small hole into the area. Now, she simply had to slide the tiny microphone through it. She watched intently to insure that the conversation below was being recorded on her device.
An old human entered the room a few minutes later. Eve was seated on the exam table, trying to ignore the crinkling paper underneath her. The old man had kind eyes though he didn't seem like the type to put up with any nonsense. Eve just hoped he could tell her how her baby was growing, even if he didn't know the child in question was a Lycan.
"Hey, Seth. Nice to see you again." The doctor shook Bastian's hand.
Eve looked at her captor curiously, but he didn't react to the name change at all. The Luna figured out that to the humans, this was his name.
"You too." Bastian grinned.
"This is the girl?" The doctor looked at Eve.
"That's right. My new bride, Sunshine." He nodded.
Eve's eve's widened at the term 'bride' but she didn't correct him. She shot him a sidelong glance, making her feelings on the subject perfectly clear.
"Sunshine is a lovely name." The doctor addressed her for the first time since seeing her.
"Thank you, it was chosen for me." She glanced at Bastian again.
"Alright." The old man chuckled, as if she'd been making a joke. "My name is Doctor Gant. I know you just moved here, but I'm the only physician around. If you need any help with anything, this is where you come."
Eve nodded. She understood that the man was trying to be kind to her. Still, she was anxious to begin the exam. If something was going to go wrong, Eve wanted it to happen already.
"Did you have a family doctor before you moved here? I can get your records from him." He asked.
Eve felt the static of Bastian's gaze burrowing into the side of her head. She thought quickly about how to respond.
"No. I haven't needed to go to the doctor that much before. I think we just went to the health department." She replied.
"That's alright. Now, when was the last time you went to the doctor about the baby?" As the doctor spoke, he sat in front of Eve on a rolling stool.
"Five months, give or take." She replied honestly.
"That's not good. Why did you stop going, if I may ask?" Gant probed, scribbling in a folder.
"Her family hates me. They didn't know about the baby. Sunshine tried to hide it from them and she stopped going." Bastian answered with ease.
"I understand, family can be tough. But you have to put your health and your baby first from now on, okay? Have you been taking any prenatal vitamins?" He replied.
"Yes, sir. Everyday." She nodded.
"Any issues with blood pressure, blood sugar, or heart disease?" The doctor put the blood pressure cuff on her arm and began pumping it full of air.
"No, sir." She winced just before the cuff released.
"Alright. I'll take some bloodwork and send it to the lab just to check your levels." He stated.
Eve looked to Bastian. She was worried. Her blood would surely look different from Marshall Gant's human patients. Bastian simply offered her a calm smile, as if he'd already thought of a solution to this problem.
"Please, raise your sleeve." The doctor prepared a needle and some empty vials.
