Chapter Oct. 24: Fairy
« Hey Wendy? » Bianca called her twin as she scribbled on a scroll. « You know the tooth fairies? The ones who live near the Elven Woods? »
They were supposed to be preparing for their lesson before their teacher, Mr. Aspen, arrived. They have ample time for some chatting before that though. Wendy shoved a small sweet into her mouth.
« Yeah? »
« What if tooth fairies were actually a part of a whole species? »
The two sisters looked up at each other, both starting to seriously ponder the question.
« So like, bone fairies? » Wendy pitched in, gnawing at her candy. « That sounds both really interesting and terrifying honestly. »
The girls then brought up whatever hypotheses that came to mind, adding and building to their idea of bone fairies.
« Do they have bigger and stronger wings than the flimsy tiny ones then? If you’re gonna haul bones around, you have to be strong enough to carry them right? » « Yeah that’d make sense. »
« Are tooth fairies essentially scavengers? Since they wait for your tooth to fall first. » « Well, according to that logic, they’re even paying you for your teeth. So I guess we’d be like a shop clerk then? » « Unless they’re gatherers? »
« Hunter bone fairies? » « Yeah, like they’d just come and snatch your bones forcefully. » « Oh wow. »
As they argued about whether bone fairies collected what they found or somehow ate the bones, a tall figure suddenly loomed over them.
« Bianca, Wendy. What are you young ladies talking about so passionately? » Mr. Aspen stood behind their seats, arms crossed and a slight frown on his face. The twins looked at each other, then to their teacher and asked.
« Sir, you know the tooth fairies that live near the Elven Woods? » Their tutor nods slowly, expression characteristically unchanging. « Are there other bone fairies? »
« Actually, » Mr. Aspen starts, immediately feeling the curious stares of his students burning into his face. « I’ve actually had a colleague from my time at the Academia who went to the Elven Woods to research fairies. »
The two girls immediately tried to get an answer from their teacher, who seemed to be teasing them with how slowly he was speaking. After nearly a minute, Mr. Aspen finally proclaimed:
« There are indeed other... bone fairies as you call them. Notably, the most dangerous are, unofficially named, spine fairies. » A pair of bewildered twins looked up in interest and worry. Seeing this, the professor couldn’t help but add. « They aren’t quite as patient or docile and small like tooth fairies. In fact, they’re actually quite active and aggressive. »
