Chapter 10
Paige pointed her finger at Cooper, who stood up as if he prepared himself for this. "Lauren told me about him, and I thought we should give him a chance to make the Sapper so that you could leave, and we'll finally move on with our lives." "The last time I checked, I was the only one imprisoned by vampires whose lives still went on every day like usual," I taunted.
"Oh, Dani. You don't know how much of a nuisance you've been," she said before picking up something from the table beside her.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Just take the thing, Dani," Lauren said with impatience, so I walked up to Paige and took the hat with a black mesh that was meant to cover the face. "A fascinator? What is this for?"
"Cooper will continue making the Sapper. We'll go to Midplains because that's where he lives."
My mouth hung open as I stared at her, waiting for her to say that it was just a joke. "The Ministry of Justice is still looking for fugitives and the prisoners you locked up in the cellar. Have you forgotten that I'm a fugitive?" "How could I forget, Miss Murderer?" she taunted.
I stepped back and gripped the accessory. "But why do you want to help me now?"
"Because I hate you," she replied right away. "Now we're off to Midplains because we can't bring Cooper's stuff here."
"Surely Rougan could do something about that," I said.
She smiled and rolled her eyes. "You had one sex with him, and you think he'll do everything for you?"
My face heated while I checked the other two's reactions. Lauren was judging me with her eyes, and Cooper looked at me in confusion. I took a deep breath and looked away, but I suddenly felt dizzy, so I leaned against the table's edge to my left.
I walked out of the greenhouse when my stomach turned. My heart raced while I continued walking. A pair of eyes followed me, and I had to stop when I didn't know where I was going. I was near the gate again, and the dome was still visible above us.
"Do you need something?" a male vamp asked beside me.
I shook my head and looked around. The village was lively, and everyone had their share of tasks while I stood there watching. "Where's Rougan?"
He shook his head and looked around as well. "We haven't seen him down here. He must be at the mansion since the travel was delayed."
"What travel?"
"We will hunt for tonight's feast."
"What feast?"
He smiled before briefly pointing his hand at me. "He told us that it's your birthday, so we're hunting for a nice banquet."
I held onto my nape because I could feel my head spinning again. My eyes landed on a vamp from one of the houses, who was grilling chicken in his front yard. He seemed pretty expert at what he did while he sat on his heels and tossed another wood on the fire.
"Lady Jones, are you okay?" asked the vamp beside me while he tried to meet my gaze.
I couldn't take my eyes off the fire as an image flashed in my mind. For reasons I couldn't explain, time ran slowly; the vamps around me moved so sluggish, but I, too, couldn't look at them at a normal pace. I could hear my breathing until an image appeared in my mind, and to my horror, it manifested in front of me. The fire in front of us blazed twice as large as a human size.
Squeals filled the place as the vamp beside me hid me behind him. The crowd took a few steps back from the fire while the vamp who was grilling burned his arm. No one could get him away from the fire, so I ran up to him. "Lady Jones! It's dangerous!"
I sat on my heels and held onto the vamp's arm. "Let's go."
"I can't," he whispered. I observed him and figured that even his leg caught fire, and his pair of breeches burned along with his skin. He was bleeding so bad, so I looked at the fire. That isn't normal.
Someone aggressively pulled me away and ran at full speed, making me let go of the vamp. I lost my balance when we stopped, but the person grabbed me at my waist. "What the hell are you doing near a fire that could burn you entirely?!" Rougan screamed at my face, but I was too light-headed, so his voice sounded faint.
I stared at him, trying to make out what's happening to me. I shook my head and stared into his eyes. "I saw it," is all I could mumble.
His anger quickly faded while he cupped my cheek. "Are you okay?" His warm breath couldn't calm me down, and I started to panic. I looked around and found pairs of eyes watching us. The fire has died down while I could smell their accusation towards me. "It w-wasn't me."
"Hey," Rougan's hand went down to the side of my neck, so I turned to him.
"I swear..."
"Yes, I know. You're not feeling well-❞
"No...no," I gently pushed him as I grabbed onto my skirt. "Something's wrong here." When I looked at the Sunkens, they were still throwing me vindictive stares.
"Dani..." Rougan tried to reach for my arm, but I stepped away.
"What's happening to me? I could see a dome over us, and there were images in my head. They were only in my head at first, but they happened for real! They happened! I saw the fire in my head, Rougan! What have you done to me?!" I screamed in dread.
Tears started trailing down my cheeks as he tried to grab me. "You should rest first. The fire had nothing to do with you, Dani. Eldon put too much wood. That's just all."
"No." I shook my head while he pulled me for a hug. "I'm going to die here," I whispered in terror as I pushed him away and turned to the gate. "Dani, come on. You can't get past it."
I walked up to the gate anyway, and no guard even bothered to stop me. Until lightning strikes appeared from the ground, covering the whole archway. It shined in front of me while I held my breath and stared at the dreadful thing. "What is this?"

Someone pulled me away. It was Rougan and his sad eyes. "Let's go back to the mansion."
I pointed at the dome above us. "Was that you, too? You need to make sure, huh? Even if I couldn't possibly climb up on a 10 feet wall?! Lightning and a fucking dome?!"
He quickly shook his head. "The dome's on you. It's not us; we don't even see it. But you do, so it must be you who made it," he explained.
"Stop this nonsense_"
"You're tired, Dani. Come on."
He rested his arm behind me while we began walking. I caught Paige, Lauren and Cooper's figure from the infirmary's door. They stood close to each other while the guys were helping the injured vamp get to the infirmary.
I looked away and let Rougan take me inside the mansion. We entered the solarium, where two handmaids followed us and placed a tray on the coffee table. Rougan poured water into a glass and handed it to me. I took it, but all I did was stare at the floor while my back rested on the couch.
Rougan sat beside me and placed his arm atop the couch's frame. "Dani," he called. "It's only every a century that a kingmage is born, so only a few creatures got to live through several centuries to be able to know a lot about your kind." "And your point being?"
"Forgive me if I can't provide you with answers because we're figuring you out as well. We're just as confused."
"And yet you were holding onto me like a thing or a charm." I couldn't even set my eyes on one place because of how disordered I feel. When I was finally able to meet his gaze, I glared and frowned at him. "You said I was dangerous, yet you had sex with me. Is the danger worth the price?"
He couldn't even blink when he heard what I said. He just cleared his throat and gently shook his head. "We simply had a deal, Dani. You will stay here until you finish making a Sapper."
I gave him a suspicious look. "Your eyes look too innocent for a vampire, you know? I expected them to be more brutal. But is this a perk of being beautiful? I could get to see you confused and lying?"
He clenched his jaw while he looked at my lips. "The only pretty privilege you could get from me is good sex."
I rolled my eyes and put the glass back on the table before standing up. When I turned to him, his eyes were sorry again. "Funny how you say everything you want and regret it later on," I taunted.
He looked away as he lazily sat against the couch. "I'm sorry..." he mumbled like a shy kid.
I leaned forward and rested my palm beside his legs to meet his gaze. He sat straight, glancing at my lips frequently. When our eyes locked, I gave him a stern look, so he behaved his eyes. "I don't want to go to Midplains. Tell your people to get Cooper's stuff and make a place for him here, and I am not asking."
He nodded as he glanced at my lips again like a hungry animal he is. I pushed his chin upwards so our eyes would meet. "Are you even listening?"
"I am,” he whispered, clenching his jaw. He tried to reach for my cheek, but I already stood up and went on my way. A smirk plastered on my face as I headed outside the mansion. I sat on one of the benches in front of the lawn and took a deep breath.
"A kingmage can provide protection..."
"The dome's on you. It's not us; we don't even see it. But you do, so it must be you who made it."
I stared at the dome over us. Ever since I got here, I learned things about myself more than I ever did outside, and worse, it's absurd. I've always been ordinary all my life, so it's impossible that I suddenly become...magical, celestial, or whatever that is.
"She instantly forms a bond with someone nice to her. And that explains your attachment with Sawyer."
I haven't seen Sawyer since this morning, so I stood up and scanned every corner of the village with my eyes. I walked up to the gate, ignoring the pair of eyes around me, and found Sawyer talking to someone near one of the wagons. When he noticed my presence, he gave me a cold gaze and looked at me from head to toe. He turned to his companion and tapped his arm before he left. I walked towards him and smiled.
"They said you were lashing out earlier," he said while he crossed his arms.
I rubbed my forehead as my other hand gripped onto my skirt. "I was looking for you because there's something I'd like to ask."
"Ask away," he said as he sighed and looked away like he's already disappointed at the conversation.
"Rougan told me something about attachment." He finally looked back, but I couldn't meet his gaze. "He said that a kingmage instantly forms a bond with someone nice to her, and he told me that I am attached to you." "Look at me," he said. I shot a look at him and was taken aback by the amount of disgust on his face.
"You can't go around fucking Rougan one night then come to me the next morning to talk about attachment. I've already given you up, so shut it."
"Given me up?"
He looked away while he frowned. "Just go back to his bed."
"I don't believe both of you," I mumbled, so he looked at me again. "He was lying, isn't he?" I asked.
Suddenly, I could trace a hint of sadness in his eyes. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Why does he want to make me believe that I'm attached to you and not him?" I asked, trying to prove a point.
He didn't answer and began walking away, so I watched his back. "I wasn't attached to you, Sawyer." He stopped and looked at me irritatingly. "But you're the only one I trust within these walls." He blinked while his expression softened. "If we ever make the Sapper, could you be the one to compel me?" I asked.
"Is that an order?"
"I am asking."
He nodded before looking away. "You have my word."
