Chapter 23
"Henry there you are!" I call to him as I see him walking upstairs.
"I just came to grab a few things, Kandy wants to move into the cabin." He tells me but keeps his gaze away.
"Is everything alright?"
"Ya, she's waiting for me so I better hurry." He jogs off upstairs and out of view.
I stand at the end of the stairs deep in thought. He is definitely acting differently and I can't help but wonder that it's because of Kandy.
"Desperate for attention much?" I look back at Fiona and roll my eyes.
"I think you're right, I think Kandy is a bit to controlling around Henry, I mean she wants him to move out of the pack house." I sit on the couch beside her.
"Maybe I can talk to her." Fiona suggests and I nod.
"If anyone can get through to her besides Henry it's you."
Fiona agrees to talk to her and we relax in the living room. "I'm bored." She whines and looks over to me. "Let's do something."
"Whenever we do something we get in trouble."
"We won't this time, because... We're going into the forest." She quickly stands up and pulls me to my feet.
"And why are we going to the forest?" I ask as she drags me to the back door.
"Because I want to see you in action with the moon goddess."
I stop suddenly and she lets go. "You can't see her, and I've never talked to her in front of anyone, and I don't even know if she'll-"
"Calm down, think of it as an experiment."
"Fine but don't get your hopes up."
Together we leave the house and walk into the woods. Fiona seems excited while I just worry about what will happen, will the moon goddess even come? She appeared when I tried to show my mother but obviously she couldn't see or hear her.
When we get far enough I tell Fiona to stop and we sit on the ground. I close my eyes and call to her in my mind while Fiona sits across from me.
I know you're here, I need to talk. Please come to me.
Suddenly my chest grows heavy.
I'm calling for you, please talk with me.
My heart slows down and the beating grows louder in my ears.
What's happening? What are you doing?
A voice comes through my mind, and it's her. This is private, and you must learn not to repeat these actions. Your gift is nothing to be shown.
Confusion immediately hits me and when I open my eyes I'm not longer in the forest. I'm in a much darker place. My lungs flood with air as I take a deep breath while haunting memories come to life.
"Why are we here?" I call out in the empty room.
"You made a mistake Evangeline."
I swiftly look behind me but she's not there and Fiona is completely gone. "Why did you bring me back here!" I shout. "Is this some sort of punishment!"
The walls seems to close in on me and my heart races in my chest, beating away like a drum. "Take me back, I'm sorry, please!"
When she doesn't answer I quickly stand up and run to the window, looking out at the familiar view. I haven't been back here since I left for my grandmothers.
The attic walls continue to cave in and I crouch down in the corner. "I'm sorry!"
Hysteria brings tears to my eyes and they stream down my cheeks, leaving salty trails. I hate it here. I never thought I would come back. It's as if I can still hear my parents yelling from downstairs and the other children playing outside. The noises clutter my ears growing louder and louder.
"Make it stop!" I scream. "Please!"
My hands cover my ears as more and more tears well in my eyes.
In panic, I get up and rush to the walls, banging and pushing against them to stop, but they keep moving in. I turn back to the window and attempt to force it open, struggling with the latch that was normally locked, but it opens wide and I stick my head out into the wind. "Someone help me!" I yell out. "Someone please!"
Just as the room can't get any smaller, I alarmingly climb out of the window and jump out. My hair flys up and just as I'm about to hit the hard ground my eyes shoot open.
Breathing heaving I look around at the trees.
"Oh my god Evangeline!" Fiona cries beside me, her face wet and red. "I-I thought you weren't going to wake up!"
My mind is fuzzy and I try to sit up, but my head pounds in protest. Pain stings my scalp and I reach up to touch it, but I flinch back when my fingers hit a gash. I look at the blood on my fingers and back at Fiona.
"I don't know w-what happened!" She sobs. "Your eyes rolled to the back of your head then y-you fell back and hit your head on a rock, I-I yelled for help, I think people are coming."
I feel tears trickling down the side of my face and into my hair. "What... h-happened?" My voice is rough and scratchy.
"What's going on here!" I hear male voices call out but I stay down on the grass.
"Please, you have to help her!" Fiona shouts at them. "She's the god damn Luna, just help her!"
Before I could say anything else my mind went blank and my eyes fluttered shut.

"How is she?"
Sebastian.
"She has a minor concussion, her body is drained, she fell asleep, we need to wait for her to wake up."
"You've said that for the past six hours."
"Her situation is still the same." The female voices says, "we just have to wait."
My head pounds as my eyes slowly peel open, just enough to see a sliver of light. My body feels weak. The only thing on my mind is my baby, is she okay? A small noise sounds from the back of my throat, it's too dry to speak. "My baby." I mumble, but it sounds more like random noises.
Suddenly I feel Sebastian grab my hand. "Evangeline?" His voice sounds like a dream. "Are you awake?"
My eyes open wider and move my head to face him. "I need... Water."
He picks up the cup resting on the table beside the bed and he moves the straw to my mouth. I drink everything, letting the water flow down my throat, bring enough moisture to talk. When he pulls it away I speak again. "My baby."
"She's fine." He says while stroking my hair.
Relief comes over me and I relax. "Where's Fiona?"
"She left to get you clothes and things from the house." He tells me. "Are you going to tell me what happened, Fiona said you fell back and hit a rock?"
"She's mad at me." I reach out for him and he moves closer, letting my arms wrap around him. "I made a mistake."
He gets up and gently moves me over before laying on the bed beside me. I quickly scoot up to him and he holds me in his arms. "She scares me." I mumble.
"What did she do to scare you?" He asks while continuing to stroke my hair.
I swallow. "She brought me back, to the attic- and the walls were caving in and I jumped out the window. It felt so real."
The sudden change in his face tells me he's realized I'm talking about the Moon Goddess and not Fiona.
I pause and think for a moment, forgetting about myself. "I'm worried about Henry."
"We don't have to talk about him right now, you just woke up."
"I know but I care about him, he's my family." I glance up at Sebastian. "And somethings not right."
