I am Alpha (Book 1 of I Am series)

Chapter 20

Sam P.O.V

“Ha, got ya.” I said laughing, as I pulled to a stop in the clearing, near the pack house. Cole was right on my tail and skidded to a stop, right before he collided with me, he hadn’t noticed that I had stopped so soon.

“Hey, that was unfair, you had a head start.” Cole whined.

“Oh stop being such a baby.” I laughed, he smirked.

It was good to see her finally laughing and smiling again. After we shifted and got into our normal clothes we went back inside to see everyone already seated, and glaring at us.

“Your late.” My mother said staring directly at me.

“So, I told you we were going for a run.” I shrugged as I pulled a chair out and sat down.

“Well next time be on time.” She said, giving me the look of ‘don’t do it again.’

“Bossy much.” I muttered under my breath, but apparently I wasn’t quiet enough. My mother looked up from her plate again and furrowed her brows. Making a crease in between them and squinting her eyes.

“What did you say, young man.” She gritted.

I coughed. “Umm......” I stuttered trying to find an excuse, but I couldn’t find one. I was squirming in my chair, uncomfortably. Just when I thought my mother couldn’t squint her eyes anymore, but apperantly she could. And she did, as she went back to eating.

I could hear someone laughing, I turned my head to see who it was. It was.....Sam. She was laughing so hard she eventually fell to the floor. And when she looked up I could see tears. But they weren’t tears of sadness they were tears of happiness. A smile lit up everyone else’s faces. Then Sam realised, no one else was laughing, but she didn’t care, she started laughing even harder.

“You’re.......scared....of....your.......own.....mother.” She said in between laughs. My smile dropped instantly. “I am not.” I defended.

She climbed back into her seat and kept laughing. “Are too.” Sam said.

“Am not.”

“Are too.”

“Am not.”

“Am not.”

“Are too.” I said just as I realised I fell for one of her tricks. I groaned. And everyone at the table, Hannah, Leo, Sam and my mother started laughing.

Sam P.O.V

Everyone eventually calmed down from the laughing fit we had and started talking. “So....is your birthday party going to be on your birthday, oooor are you gonna have it a day after or before your birthday?” Leo questioned with a grin.

I took a sip of my water with my eyebrow raised and placed the glass back down on the table. And looking up to see everyone waiting patiently for my answer.

“I told you I wasn’t having a party.” I said.

“Oh come onnnn. It’s your eighteenth, you’ve got to celebrate.” Hannah pleaded.

“Eighteenth.” Cole repeated and choked on his food. Hannah patted him on the back.

“Yeah, that’s right eighteenth.” Leo smirked, putting his elbows on the table and looking at Cole. “What’s happening?” I asked slowly.

“Don’t you remember what we told you about a mate?” Jo asked with a genuine smile.

“Ummm.......oh, yeah right, something about some soul mate.” I said nodding my head.

Cole P.O.V

‘Mate?’ I sighed. ‘She’s gonna find a mate soon and then we’ll have no one to fight with.’ I joked to Stan. He just laughed.

I didn’t know why but I felt my chest tighten at the thought of Sam finding her mate, it sort of made me.....jealous. But why would I be jealous though? I asked myself. Noooo, it can’t be jealousy, could it?

“When’s your birthday?” I asked. Sam looked back up to me from eating her steak.

“This Sunday.” She shrugged. And started cutting more steak.

I nodded.

“Can we have a party? Please. It will be fun.” Hannah reassured. Sam shook her head.

Sam P.O.V

“It’s your eighteenth birthday, you’ve got to celebrate.” Cole stated, trying to give me the puppy dog look. ‘That’s not going to work on me.’ I laughed to Leah and she laughed with me.

“Oh, so is the Alpha begging, now?” I smirked.

“If that’s what it takes to have a party.” He sighed.

I pointed to the ground. “Beg then.” I smiled. Cole sighed heavily, rose from his chair and knelt beside me.

“Sam, I am begging you to have an eighteenth birthday party.” He said unconvincingly and looking everywhere but at me. This was hilarious Cole begging me, wow, never thought I’d see the day.

Hannah now has her phone out, videoing this. “Try again, but this time, say it like you mean it.” I said, the smirk never leaving my face. He groaned and rolled his eyes.

“Sam, I am begging you to have an eighteenth birthday party, please.” He repeated, it wasn’t as good as I had hoped for, but, it will do.

“Fine.” I chuckled, as he stood and sat in his chair from before.

“But like I said it’s not going to be big. We have school the next morning. I know I haven’t went for a while but I’m going.” I stated. They all nodded their heads and smiled in understanding.

“So how’s your ego?” Hannah asked Cole, giggling. Cole rolled his eyes.

We all started laughing except for Cole. “Very bruised I’m guessing.” I laughed. “Wait no.....permanently damaged.” I corrected myself and started laughing even harder. For a slight second I could’ve sworn, I seen Cole’s mouth twitch into a smirk.

Cole P.O.V

I was awoken by the sound of a blender, blaring right next to my head.

“Arghhh.” I screamed as I fell off the bed, and hit the floor with a loud ‘thud’. I looked back up to see Sam. She switched the blender off.

“Morning, sleeping beauty.” She chuckled to herself.

“What are you doing this early in the morning?” I grumbled, looked at the clock on the bedside table. I read 6:00am.

“I thought I could start training early.” She shrugged.

“And you never thought of shaking me to wake me up instead of, making me think I’m getting my head chopped off by some crazy person.” I stood with my hands on my hips.

“Nope.” She said with amusement clear in her voice. “Well actually.....I did but then I realised it wouldn’t be as fun as this.” She said holding up the blender.

“Ugh. Whatever just get out so I can get dressed.” I said looking through my wardrobe. Sam walked out with the blender and I could hear her giggling like a little girl, as she made her way down into the kitchen.

We had finished training for the day and made our way back to the house. Once we got inside they were all watching a movie that had just rolled onto the credits.

“Yes, movie time.” I screamed, ran, jumped over the lounge and sat down. Sam sat down shortly after, in between Hannah and I, while Leo was to my left and my mother next to him.

“What do you guy’s want to watch?” My mother asked.

“A-“ Sam went to say something but Leo and I cut in before she could finish. “Not a chick flick.” We screamed.

Sam P.O.V

“A horror movie, I was gonna say but you didn’t let me finish.” I said raising my eyebrows at Leo and Cole. Cole’s face went pale.

“Are you alright?” I asked furrowing my brows at him.

“Mmhhmm.” He said nodding vigorously.

“What about......the conjouring?” I asked everyone nodded except for Cole, who was still very pale if I might add.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” I asked him again.

“Yep.” He gulped.

“Okay.” I said, getting comfortable as Jo clicked on the movie.

As the first scary part came, I noticed Cole getting uneasy. He was running his hands through his hair like his life depended on it. His eyes were as wide as they could get and looked like they were going to pop out his head.

I poked him in the shoulder. He flinched when I touched him and turned his head swiftly towards me, his distraught clear in his eyes.

“Are you alright?” I whispered.

“Yeah.” He whispered back.

“Don’t like horror movies.” I grinned.

“No, I despise them.” He said.

“Well,” I said turning to face Hannah, but turned back to Cole, when I realised she was asleep. “I was gonna say she could be your cuddle buddy, but she’s asleep so you’re gonna have to just suck it up buttercup.” I snickered.

He turned his head back to the tv, when one of the characters screamed. Cole squealed like a girl with the character, which scared Hannah as she woke up. And he jumped, grabbing the closest thing to him, which was unfortunately me. He grabbed me and held me close to his chest. I was taken by surprise. Cole was looking around the room frantically, looking at everyone and then realised he was holding me. He let go, of what felt like death grip and I slowly sat back onto my side of the lounge. “Sorry.” He said embarrassed, and started scratching the back of his neck while everyone else started laughing.

I was still shocked and didn’t know what to do. Cole cleared his throat loudly, clearly from being uncomfortable in the situation. I stared at the tv blankly, not being able to come to terms with what just happened.

“Did you scream like a girl?” I asked, after I came out of my shocked state.

He looked at me. “Pfft, noooo.” He said as everyone started laughing again.

I looked back to the movie, when I felt something hit my cheek. It was popcorn, I turned to see who threw it and surely enough, it was Cole, grinning like the idiot he is.

“Woopsies, it slipped.” He laughed.

I grabbed the bucket of popcorn off of the coffee table and started pegging them at him. “Food fight.” Leo and Hannah screamed, before grabbing the bowl of chips and squashing them in each other’s hair.

Jo quickly stood up and went to run, when Cole grabbed a bottle of water, opened it and tipped it on her. “Ohhhh. So are you planning to attack and old lady in a food fight.” She asked, then looked at Hannah, Leo and I with the ‘get him’ look as we all attacked Cole.

“Hey.” He yelled as I kept throwing the popcorn at him, while Hannah and Leo threw chips at him. I had half a bowl of popcorn left, so I decided to tip it down the back of Cole’s shirt, while he was focused on his siblings.

“Woopsies it slipped.” I repeated what he said to me earlier and smirked.

“That’s it.” He said, but before he could do anything I grabbed and already open water bottle and tipped it over his head. He gasped as the cold water hit him.

We all started laughing uncontrollably. “Your going down.” He smirked, I dropped the plastic bowl and I started running straight towards the back door. Once I was outside he caught up to me. He attempted to push me into the pool, but, if I was going down so was he. I grabbed his arm as I fell into the pool, and he was forcefully taken with me.

The pool water was cold and harsh. I swam straight towards the top. Once I got to the top gasping for air. I dragged myself out of the pool, Cole had already managed to get out and he laid on the grass sprawled out.

Leo, Hannah and Jo were standing at the back door watching us, as they laughed. Cole and I started laughing with them.

A few hours later, after everyone helped clean up the food fight mess, we were helping each other cook dinner. “So Sam, I was going to go shopping tomorrow, and I thought you might want to come and we’ll find you a dress for your party.” Hannah said, with a massive smile spread across her face. “Okay, that would be cool.” I said as I peeled potatoes.

“Yay. Finally, I’ve found a shopping buddy.” She squealed. I laughed.

“Hey I thought I was your shopping buddy.” Cole looked up from cutting carrots, he pretended to sound hurt.

“Oh come on, Cole. You can’t have your brother as a shopping buddy, besides everything that I like you hate.” Hannah shrugged.

“No offense sis, but that’s because you have terrible taste.” Cole said.

“And what an oversized black jumper with dark green oversized tracksuit pants, looks nice?” Hannah asked, raisng her eyebrows.

“That’s basically what my pajamas are.” I laughed, as everyone joined in.
