I am Alpha (Book 1 of I Am series)

Chapter 2

“Wow,” Zaya whispered as she circled me. I couldn’t believe I was a wolf. Well not completely a wolf more like a werewolf. ‘Hi Sam, my names Leah. I am your wolf that you can shift into anytime.’ The voice inside my head exclaimed. ‘What, I have a wolf? I mean I am a wolf-‘ I screamed in my head when I was cut off by Leah. ‘Werewolf’ she snickered. ‘Oh.... well yeah werewolf.’ I said thinking. ‘I know this might be a bit of a shock but there are so many good things about being a werewolf. And I can show you all of them.’ Leah said excitedly. ‘Like, focus on your hearing right now, and listen.’ She said. I slowed my breathing down and closed my eyes I could hear...... Zaya’s heartbeat. It was pounding erratically and her breathing was out of control. ‘Now if you want to change back now, imagine yourself as a human again on two legs.’ Leah said as I done exactly that. I felt my bones shifting into place again, but this time it wasn’t painful. Once I was back to my human self I noticed my clothes were torn. Zaya threw me her jacket and I grabbed it in one swift motion, my reflexes were quicker than and smoother than ever. I wrapped the jacket around me while Zaya was still in shock. “Zaya?” I asked quietly. “Zaya, say something, please?” I pleaded. “Wow,” she laughed. ‘Well at least she said something,’ Leah chuckled and giggled with her in my head. “You’re a werewolf, you’re actually a werewolf. Wow just wow.” Zaya said with the widest smile on her.

“Zaya, you can’t tell anyone about this alright, they will lock me up and do experiments on me,” I said worriedly. “I would never do that, your my best friend, no matter what I will never tell anyone,” she gave me a reassuring smile and a quick hug before we left the woods. “By the way, your eyes. They were so amazing when you were a wolf. They bright red and glowing. And now your back to normal your blue eyes have red spurts through them, your eyes have always been beautiful but now...... they are the most amazing colour.” She said excitedly. “I guess I’ll have to tell everyone I have contact lenses.” I laughed. When we arrived back at the house I jumped the two bottom steps on the ladder and climbed inside the window. Zaya stood outside waving goodbye. “Goodnight Zaya, I’ll see you tomorrow at school....” I paused and looked at the clock on my bedside table. It was four thirty in the morning. And looked back to Zaya. “Well more like later today,” I whispered and shut the window. I quickly put some more pajamas on and noticed the bite from the wolf was gone apart from leaving a big scar, I covered it up as best as I could with my pajamas and climbed into bed. I tried to fall asleep but couldn’t, I decided to get up and go to get a cup of water. I silently walked out of my bedroom and downstairs. I grabbed a glass and filled it with water then took a sip. I was watching outside the window into the woods, where I saw a figure move, it was the wolf that bit me. And it could see me. The wolf took off further into the trees. I heard my dad come down the stairs. “Couldn’t sleep either?” He asked, as I kept my eyes right where the wolf was standing. “No,” I said as I slowly turned around to face him. “Or did you go out again and disobey my orders?” He asked raising an eyebrow. “I....I..uhh,” I stuttered. “How did you know?” I rolled my eyes. “In case you have forgotten, I am a policeman.” He said crossing his arms. “No....how could I forget?” I said sarcastically, asI walked back to my room.

The next morning I got up, showered, brushed my teeth, put a red crop top with a leather jacket and black ripped jeans with ankle high boots on. I had a quick look in the mirror of my eyes, Zaya was right they were a vibrant blue with red spurts throughout them. I then descended the stairs and grabbed my backpack. “Morning,” I said to my dad as he was sitting at the table sipping his coffee and eating toast. “Morning, Sam,” He said while quickly glancing at me. I eyes his toast. “Sam,” my dad said warningly as I grabbed his toast and ran for the door. “Bye, love you,” I yelled as I opened the door. “Make sure you do that jacket up, you’ll get cold,” he yelled after me. When I arrived at school the overwhelming smells of deodorant, perfume and sweat filled my nose. I jumped out of my car and was bombarded by Zaya. She ran gave me a quick hug. “Hey,” she said excitedly. “Yuck, I can smell everything and trust me it doesn’t smell nice,” I said pinching my nose. Zaya laughed. “Can’t you like focus on the good smells somehow?” She said tilting her head. ‘Tell her that it doesn’t really work that way.’ Leah said laughing. “Leah said that it doesn’t really work that way,” I laughed. Zaya looked confused. “Oh, sorry I forgot to tell you I can communicate with my wolf,” I said giving her a smile. “That’s awesome,” she screamed, everyone looked our way. I covered my ears, in pain. “Sensitive hearing,” I whispered. She mouthed ‘sorry’. “It’s okay,” I gave her a soothing smile.

It got to lunch time, Zaya and I were headed towards our lockers, which luckily were right next to one another. We were about to turn a corner. I smelt something. I growled in frustration. And my growls were getting louder every step I took. “Sam, what’s wrong?” Zaya asked she looked really worried. But right now all I could do was focus on the smell, Leah was taking over I had no control. ‘Leah what are you doing?’ I asked Leah trying to stop her. ‘I’m sorry Sam, I have to.’ Leah said. ‘You have to what?’ I screamed at her. No response. Zaya and I rounded another corner to find Cole Larson, standing at his locker with the rest of his friends Xavier and Ryan. They all looked at me. Leah still had control. She forced me over while I was still growling, she then made me lock eyes with Cole. “Sam, no,” Zaya screamed while running up to me and shielding me from them. She turned to face me. “Your eyes,” she whispered. “I...can’t............something’s......wrong,” I managed whisper back while Leah was still in control. I gently pushed Zaya to the side and stepped forward, Ryan and Xavier stood there with their mouths open and eyes almost popping out. But Cole, he stood there in confusion. Trying to make sense of it all. Before I knew it I was growling dangerously low.
