High School Terrans

Chapter 5

At the end of school the next day Kyle was suited up in a practice uniform walking out onto the football field as Jason and Aaron observed.

“What the hell is he doing here?” Jason questioned grudgingly.

“Some of the other varsity players are assisting me in tryouts to scrimmage with the incomers. You familiar with the game?” Coach Wilson asked.

“I am a fast learner, “Kyle said.

“Good. Line up on the field and we’ll see what you can do.”

Kyle slipped his helmet on and ran out to take his position on the field. The coach blew his whistle and shouted, “Everyone in formation.”

“What are you doing here?” Jason said sternly seeing Kyle crouch in front of him. Kyle could see that Jason had no love in his face taking on the caricature of a pit bull ready to attack at any moment.

“I think I am trying out for the team.”

As soon as the whistle blew Jason attacked Kyle knocking him to the ground with a loud thud hitting the turf. Then they formed again but this time Kyle caught the ball and threw it down the field to another player. After several plays, the players stood in front of the coach seeing him confer privately off to the side with his assistants.

“You are good I will give you that,” a voice said beside Kyle.

“Thanks,” he replied, turning to another student dressed in a team uniform.

“I’m Christian,” he said, sticking out his hand.

Kyle shook his hand still looking sideways knowing he was receiving dirty looks from Jason and his buddies.

“You sure you want to be talking to me?”

“Nobody decides who I speak to,” he said, taking a glance at Jason. “Not everyone is as much of a jerk as he is. The worse kind.”

Coach Wilson blew his whistle again gaining everyone’s attention. “Thanks to all who tried out. I will post a list of those who have made the team on the window outside of my office.”

Inside the men’s locker room, Kyle stood in front of the coach’s office window scanning the list discovering his name with a look of elation he made the team while Jason only had a look of disgust.

“You might have made the team but you will never be one of us, Terran.”

Kyle stared down at his back seeing him walking away in obvious ilk, but at that moment only felt a sense of pride.
