Chapter 8
I watch her as she sits beside me with a thoughtful look on her face. Slowly turning to me, I see a question already forming in her head.
“Who has hurt Felix?” She asks softly, but disgust evident in her words, as if even talking about the person who has hurt my brother is something awful.
“One of our enemies,” I reply carefully, which is not a lie entirely as hunters are our enemies.
Years have passed but still, some of them try to kill us even though most of us are living peacefully with humans.
“Enemy?” She frowns and I already know her next question. So to save the time, I answer her even before she voices out her question.
“Our family has enemies from generations.” I pick out my words carefully, trying not to reveal enough details yet telling her everything truthfully, “The animosity has been passed to from generation to generation, all they want is to kill my people.” A snarl makes a way to my lips as I think about the cruel ways they have tortured even the innocent people of our kind.
“My mother was also killed by one of them when Felix was just three years old.” Swallowing, I look down remembering my mother’s lifeless body.
Felix is the youngest of all, the baby of the family. He doesn’t even remember much about our mother, as he has spent very little time with her between all of us.
In the human world, he is twenty years old, but in our world, he is around a hundred and two.
“Still so young.” My beast says fondly in my mind.
“Oh.” She covers her mouth as tears swim in her beautiful eyes, “It must have been so much difficult for him to be without a mother when he needed the most. He was just a small child, who needed the comfort of his mother’s arm.” The way she says, I can know this is the pain she is familiar with, even her mother died when she was not even a teenager.
“What about your father? Where is he?” She blinks trying to dry her eyes.
“I don’t know.” I sigh and shrug, “He couldn’t bear the death of my mother and left us, after that he never came back.”
When our soul dies it becomes really difficult for us to survive. Our beast completely goes insane and sometimes we even end up taking our own life.
Maybe even my father took his life, as it has been years I haven’t felt him through the bond which we have with our family.
“Those vile creatures.” She angrily stands up, “I swear, if I get my hands on them I will kill them without even think once.” Anger coming off from her body in waves, as she paces around.
“How could they take someone’s life, because of some stupid animosity?” She clenches her jaws, “If that was not enough, they attacked Felix.” Her eyes are blazing with anger.
“They have to pay for it,” she says as coldness overtaking her features, leaving no trail of emotions on her face other than the fire in her eyes, “Whoever tries to hurt my family, will have to pay with their life."
My heart soars with love and pride when she unknowingly claimed us as her family.
The fire in her to protect what belongs to her is burning with so much ferocity that I don't have any doubt that anyone who so much even thinks to hurt her family will be burned into ashes.
She doesn’t know, but her soul has already accepted the family bond.
Without thinking, I walk up to her and pull her towards me in a bone-crushing hug. Her body perfectly fits to mine as she is meant to be in my arms, which is nothing but true. She is made for me, just the way I am for her.
Her stiff shoulders relax, as she returns my hug. Turning her head, she places a small kiss on my heart while this act itself makes my heart skip a beat.
She doesn't realize this but she has my heart in the palm of her hand.
The ringing her phone makes her sigh loudly, as she steps back immediately my heart aches at the loss of her warmth.
The look on her face is enough to tell that I am not the only one who is suffering from this feeling of loss.
"Wait for me, I coming in five minutes." She speaks without even saying hello, as soon as she answers the call.
"I had called my driver to pick me up from here." She informs me.
"You could have said to me, I would have dropped you myself." I frown, "There was no need to call someone else." My possessive side appearing by the thought of some other male who is not a family near her.
"Listen here." She snaps her fingers in front of my face, "You look hot when you go all possessive and don't you think I haven't noticed the glare which you were sending in Raymond's direction."She arches her eyebrow, as a teasing smile tilts the corner of her lips upward, clearly sensing my possessiveness, "But I would appreciate that, even if you don't trust others, you should trust me."
"And, Atlas, you need to rest too." She holds my hand lightly squeezing before I can argue, "I know you have been worried about your brother, but as you have yourself said that he is better now. So now you need to rest."
Silence passes between us, as we both glance down at our interlocked hands. After a few moments, she leaves my hand and crosses her arms over her chest.
"I have to go, Atlas," she softly says like she knows her words might hurt me, "It is getting late and my nonna is waiting for me. I am sure if in the next hour I am not at home, she is going to send a search team to find me and bring me back to her." Her lips curve in a small affectionate smile talking about the lady who is her grandmother.
"Can I please come here again tomorrow?" She hesitantly asks, looking unsure of my answer, "I want to check on him personally, to make sure he is fine."
"I still think we should take him to the doctor or call the doctor here and at least get his wound checked..." she trails off, shaking her head as this is the thousandth time she asked me to take him to the doctor.
"He is fine, trust me." Holding her shoulders, I look into her gaze.
"Okay..." She nods her head, "But inform me if he needs anything, I don't care even if it three in the morning." Her worry for Felix makes me chuckle.
"Make sure he sleeps on his back, and doesn't move much, he can pull his stitches and hurt himself even more." She makes a face, and continues, "He might feel the pain when the effect of the pain killer will wear off, so give him a pain killer again to ease the pain if it becomes unbearable."
When I refused her doctor's suggestion then she forcefully made me feed Felix a painkiller.
"Anything else?" I smirk at her, while my heart swells with love.
"Are you making fun of me, mister?" She glares at me without a hint of anger present behind her eyes.
"I would not even dream to make fun of my queen." I tease her raising my hands in mock surrender.
She continues to glare at me, as a small smile slowly appearing on her face. Looking away she shakes her head, then glance at me with the breathtaking smile of hers.
"Atlas." She sighs, "It is weird that I don't feel like leaving from here." Her eyes roam around the house, which has turned into a home because of her presence.
"Then don't" Whispering, I cup her face in my hands as I let myself lost in the beautiful eyes in which I can already see my future.
"But I have to." She holds my wrists while intently gazing into my eyes.
"I know." I nod my head, fully aware she also has a family, other than us... the people who love her. I can't be selfish and keep her with me. Away from the people whom she has known her entire life.
"But you will come tomorrow." I smile at her pressing my forehead against her, inhaling her heavenly smell as much as I can to keep me calm until I have her back in my arms again, "If you want I can come to pick up myself."
"No, I will come myself." She shakes her head, "You need to be here with your brother." She smiles reassuringly.
"I will see you tomorrow then," she says as she picks up her handbag, and slightly smile at me.
"Yeah, we will wait for you," I answer her, also from my beast's behalf who is telling me to lock her in a room so that she can't leave our side like the possessive idiot he is.
Giving me one last glance she walks outside the house, and instantly restlessness replaces the calmness in my heart due to her absence.
