Chapter 34
Regina’s POV
The hunter whose name I have learned is Jason suddenly looks away realizing his words have drawn everyone’s attention towards him.
His fists are clenched at his sides as he is attempting to look calm, however, the hate in his eyes are showing his true emotions.
“What are you saying, Jason?” Brianna asks looking confused and curious.
“I am saying what is truth.” He shrugs, “Being hunters doesn’t mean that we should kill mindlessly. We were bred to kill but kill what is evil and from what I can see these so-called Elders are the ones who deserved to be killed.”
“Have you seen them?” He turns to look at his fellow hunters while gesturing towards the door where everyone else is, “Those vampires whom we call heartless have more concerned in their eyes for their people then our Elders. Our Elder doesn’t even treat us equally, they think we are below them.” He scoffs bitterly.
“My brother died trying to protect them but what did they do to him? They didn’t even bother getting back his body because he has fulfilled his purpose now there was no need to waste effort and money on retrieving something which is gone. Our lives don’t matter to them, we are just like the puppets in their hands.” The slight quiver in his voice and the unshed glisten in his eyes makes my heart aches for him.
“Nobody wants to live the life of a killer.” He looks at me, “It kills some of us whose humanity has not stripped away from them to watch our hands covered in blood but we don’t have any choice.” He shakes his head, and when I look around almost all six of the hunters have the same look of understanding.
“What if you were given a choice?” I ask as everyone looks at me with a surprise.
“It is a nice dream, but we will never have any choice.” Jason smiles ruefully, “Our fates were sealed the moment we were born as hunters. If these Elder will die then someone else from their bloodline will take their place who will be the same as them and then we will be forced to be a part of the war to avenge them. This cycle never breaks, it keeps going on. The only escape for us is death, that’s why sometimes some of us willingly volunteer to fight so that if God is kind enough then someone will end our misery. ”
“Just answer my question.” I nod pointedly at him slightly irritated, not liking the hopelessness behind his words.
He meets the eyes of his fellow hunters and something tells me they all look up to him as their unofficial leader.
“We will still fight because it is in our blood, however then our fight will be against what is truly evil, not against what Elders think is evil.” He holds my gaze unflinchingly answering on behalf of everyone, while a slow smile spread across my lips hearing the answer which I want to hear.
“I am giving you all a choice, a choice to live your life the way you want.” I grin glancing at them, “You are free from this life which you haven’t choose but forced to live. And I promise I will help you in every way I can to make sure you have the life which you deserve.”
“How is that even possible?” Brianna’s brother raises his eyebrows looking at me in disbelief while there is a hint of hope visible in his eyes.
“Well, tonight after all those thickheads inside that room will pay for their wrongdoings, then you all will be free to live your life.” A wicked smile plays on my lips, “Because they have committed the biggest mistake of their life when they have entered this building with ill intentions towards my family.” Raising my eyebrows, I nod my head as my lips stretch into a smile by the thought of torturing them.
I will show them who is the real monster.
Slowly but gradually grin appears on their faces while the hope for a free future shines bright in their eyes.
Atlas POV
My mood instantly gets better when Regina’s face comes before my sight.
“Hey, monster.” She smiles playfully while standing beside me. It seems like she has sensed the agitation of my beast because she rests her head against my shoulder while gently runs comforting circles with her thumb on the back of my hand.
“Few minutes with those hunters kids and you are already calling me a monster?” I arch my eyebrow and place a kiss on her temple.
“I don’t need anyone to tell me that you are a monster.” She smirks, “Because I am aware of how much of a monster you are.” Raising her head she pecks my lips teasingly, which makes my beast go nearly insane as there is something about her confidence which brings us to our knees.
“Now shall we start the fun or you will willingly hand us those boys back.” Abruptly she turns as she glances at the Elders.
“You will only get the head of those leeches.” Edgar spits while looking at Regina with contempt.
“Very well, then.” Her calm tone excites my beast as we know what might be hidden behind her calm exterior, “So as a return gift, I will hand you the head of him.” She walks behind Marvin and without giving him any chance to realize what is happening she places the dagger against his throat.
“Wanna say something to your son before I give you his head as a trophy to hang on your living room wall?” She tilts her head slightly and looks at Carlos.
If earlier he was looking at Regina with hatred, then now his gaze holds pure venom as he glares at her.
“One hour has already passed and now you just have one more hour left to return our kids.” She reminds them, “Trust me in this one hour, I will not mind giving this room a little makeover by covering its wall with your blood. So, act fast before I fulfill my promise.” She presses the blade against Marvin’s neck drawing out some blood.
“Dad!” He glances at his father looking frightened whereas Regina looks unbothered by Carlos’s menacing look.
“Stop! Don’t do anything to him.” Carlos shakes his head while his eyes blazing in anger clearly unhappy with the turn of events, “Those vampires will be here soon,” He says through gritted teeth.
“I want them completely unharmed and fine.” She gives him a pointed look, “Because one single scratch on their body, then I will personally gift you all to them as their human pet.”
“You have my word, they will be safely returned to you but after that, you will let us go.” He demands, however, the hint of fear is visible in his eyes which he is attempting to hide because by now they have learned that my Regina truly means what she says.
Instead of replying to him, she just removes her dagger away from Marvin’s neck even though her face is impassive but I can clearly see in her eyes there is something going on in her mind.
And we just have to wait to find out what is she up to. But I am sure of one thing, that whatever she will do that is going to make me love her even more.
