Her Home

Chapter 16 — Surprise!

Rebecca went straight to her doctor's office when she was dropped off at the door of the hospital. "I have an appointment with Dr. Smith," she told the receptionist.

"Rebecca," she heard Sandy say from beside her. She turned and gave the doctor a smile. "Come with me." Rebecca followed her through a door and down the hallway to an exam room. When she sat on the bed, Sandy took a seat on a rolling stool. "So, what's going on? You don't need to be here until next month," she gave Rebecca a worried look.

Rebecca took a deep breath, "I think I'm gaining too much weight," she told her. "I mean I know everyone gains at different rates but I just have a feeling," she shrugged. Sandy nodded her head.

"Okay," she opened a file in her hand, "your HCG levels were a little higher than they normally are at your last appointment. How bad is your morning sickness?"

Rebecca groaned, "It's horrible I am vomiting at least three times a day and feel sick nearly all day long," she told her. She hadn't even thought that how bad she had been feeling might mean something bad.

"Okay, I am going to do another sonogram," Sandy said as she grabbed the machine from beside her. Rebecca laid down on the bed and rolled her top up. When Sandy turned the sound on and placed the probe in her stomach, Rebecca could hear something that almost sounded like a double beat of the baby's' heart. Sandy made a face that worried her.

"Is something wrong? Why does the heart sound like that?" She asked in concern. She watched Sandy's eyebrows furrow.

"No," she said and looked closer at the screen. She moved the probe around Rebecca's stomach. She said nothing which made Rebecca worry more.

"Sandy, please. What's going on?" She asked after a minute. Sandy sat back and finally looked at Rebecca with a huge smile. "What?"

"Rebecca, you're having twins." Rebecca's eyes widened.

"Twins?" She covered her mouth with her hand. She was shocked not having expected that. She started to laugh after a few seconds of thinking about what Sandy had just told her.

"Go ahead and clean up. I will go and get you scheduled for another appointment. I want you to come in more often than we had planned. At least until I am sure that there won't be any complications." Rebecca nodded. She remembered some of the possible risks that came with a multiple pregnancy so, she understood the reason for the closer observation. When she was done and Sandy had told her about her appointment the next week, Rebecca left the office. She sent Vincent a text asking where he was. She didn't have to wait long to get a response.

At the hospital checking on my father. I will stay until you get to work. I would like to check on you too.

Rebecca smiled she liked that he was so worried about her. She went to the reception desk at the hospital entrance and asked for Francesco's room number before heading to the seventh floor. When she stepped out of the elevator, Vincent was standing in the hallway talking to a doctor. Rebecca approached them. Vincent did a double take. The doctor, Matt, she knew from working on a patient the week before, sent her a smile.

"Rebecca? Is everything okay with Miss Renolds?" Matt asked. Vincent looked at him with a raised brow. Not thinking about why the man may know her, he felt a need to stake his claim. He wrapped his arm around her waist.

"I think she is here to see me, doctor," he kissed the top of her head. The doctor cleared his throat and waited for Rebecca to confirm why she was standing there. She nodded her head.

"I haven't even started my shift yet, Matt," she smiled before turning to look at Vincent who was staring at Matt. She placed a hand on his chest hoping he would calm down before causing a scene. "I just wanted to check up on my family," she turned back to look at Matt as Vincent's head snapped in her direction. She called him her family and he smiled a little before turning back to Matt and sending him a glare. Excusing himself, Matt walked away.

"Are you okay?” Vincent asked moving to stand in front of her. He was worried. Rebecca smiled wide nodding her head. "You are a little early for work," he raised his brow, "did you really come to check on me and father?" Rebecca shrugged. "And I went to see Sandy."

"Dr. Smith? Why?" Rebecca bit her lip. Part of her wanted to burst out and tell him the news. The other part, noticed the look on his face and wanted to toy with him a little.

"I have gained more weight than I thought I should so I wanted to make sure everything was okay." Vincent's eyes grew wide. She held up a hand to stop him from asking anything. "They are fine," she emphasized the word 'they'. "Good," Vincent sighed in relief but then felt his heart stop when he realized what she had said. "Can you say that again?" Rebecca laughed.

"It's twins," she smiled as big as she could. Vincent smiled wrapping both arms around her waist, he pulled her to him and crashed his lips onto hers. He places small kisses all over her causing her to laugh more. He finally pulled away from her so he could see her face. He tucked hair behind her ear so he could see her eyes better.

"Twins? Two babies?" He asked. He wanted to confirm again with her. She nodded her head. "I love you," he kissed her again.

"I love you too," she smiled and kissed him back. She pulled away long before either of them wanted. "How's your father?" Vincent felt like someone had just popped his balloon.

"He was shot in the head. There was something called a hematoma." Rebecca nodded her understanding so he didn't try to explain. She could tell he didn't want to.

"They were able to operate then," she finished for him. He nodded his head.

"Now it's up to him they said," he sighed. Rebecca hugged him. Her mother had told her once, it was just as important to comfort the family members as it was the patient. They had to go through helping and supporting the patient and if no one did the same for them they could lose the compassion they needed to have throughout the process. She was glad she was able to be there for Vincent.

"Has your mother arrived yet?" Vincent nodded.

"She went to get us coffee," Rebecca smiled at him. "Shit! Do you need anything?" he asked. They hadn't known she would be here so he hadn't asked his mother to get her anything. She shook her head and he wrapped his arms around her again. She hugged him back and felt him placing light kisses on the top of her head.

Vincent took a step back from Rebecca and grabbed her by the hand and pulled her to the set of chairs just outside his father's room. He pulled her to sit on his lap instead of letting her sit in the chair beside him. "Twins," he whispered looking up at her. "I have to admit that getting two for one makes me a little excited." Rebecca rolled her eyes.

"They aren't a good deal at the grocery store, Vince," she laughed. Vincent laughed with her shaking his head.

"I didn't mean it like that. What I meant was, I planned on having more children with you... If you agreed of course and now we don't have to wait," he shrugged and looked down trying to hide his face. Rebecca was sure that he was slightly embarrassed by his confession. She placed two fingers under his chin and lifted his head.

"I love you and I am excited too," she smiled.

"Look at you two," they heard Nadia say from behind them. They turned to watch her as she walked down the hall towards them. She smiled. "You two are so adorable," she told them stopping in front of them. "Nadia," Rebecca stood and greeted her with a hug. Vincent did the same.

"How was your appointment?" She asked after pulling away from her son. They both noticed the questioning look he gave them but both ignored it.

"It went great," she put an arm around Vincent's waist. He wrapped around her and placed his hand on her stomach. "We are having twins," she beamed. Nadia's eyes widened along with her smiled.

"Twins?" She squealed. Several nurses and doctors stopped what they were doing to look in their direction. "Oh my goodness," she threw her arms around them both and hugged them tightly. "Your father will be so happy when he wakes up." She let go of them and walked into Francesco's room.

"You know she is going to be going crazy over getting two grandchildren, right?" Vincent says as he turns her to face him with both hands on her hips. She smiled and nods.

"Honestly. I'm a little nervous about two but excited at the same time," she told him.

"Twins?" They heard a squeal. Turning, they found both of his sisters standing there. Roxy was beaming you could see the excitement in her eyes. Lidia on the other hand was glaring. Rebecca moved herself so she was standing behind Vincent a little.

"Well at least you won't be stuck now, Brother. You can each take on and you can be done with the gold digger," she wore an evil smirk. Rebecca furrowed her brow. Why did she hate her so much?

"Lidia, enough," Vincent barked. Turning to Rebecca he placed his hands on her shoulder and looked her directly in the eyes, "Don't listen to her okay?" Rebecca nodded. He turned and marched toward his sister grabbing her by the arm. “I'm going to have a word with my sister then I will take you to work," he made sure he looked at Lidia when he said work so she knew that Rebecca wasn't with him for the money. He wouldn't really care if she didn't work but he knew how important her work was.

When he turned, he could hear Roxana gushing to Rebecca about the babies. At least one sister was happy for him.

"What is your problem?" He asked spinning Lidia around to face him when he was satisfied with how far away, he was from the others. Lidia crossed her arms and popped a hip out to the side.

"How can you be so blind?" She asked him. "I don't trust her and you shouldn't either," she poked him in the chest. She was lucky she was his sister because anyone else would be dead for that. "Why not? You don't even know her," he threw his hands in the air.

"Neither do you!"

"Yes, I do! Damnit, Lidia. She is the women I love and the mother of my children," he sighed. "Is this about Jeff?" He asked hesitantly. He knew she hated talking about what happened with her ex and rightfully so. But he wasn't going to let that disaster effect his life and now his family.

"What he did anyone could try doing to any one of us. She can't be trusted she isn't a part of this life." Vincent could see the hurt on her face. At least her anger made more sense now. He took a breath before pulling her into a hug. Lidia hated hugs she always felt she was too tough for them but Vincent never took no for an answer.

"I swear. Rebecca isn't doing what Jeff did," he pulled away from her and looked at her. "I would really like you to give her a chance. You have to get used to her because she isn't going anywhere," he smiled. Lidia furrowed her brows. "What do you mean?"

"She is the mother of my children for one and I plan to ask her to marry me," he said before hearing a loud gasp. He whipped around and saw Roxana with her mouth covered but he could tell she was smiling. What really caught his eye was Rebecca standing behind her with wide eyes and her mouth hanging open.
