Heart of Ra

Chapter 5

She woke up pissed as hell. Damn that bastard for last night. After he left last night, Cleo couldn't get comfortable enough to fall asleep until after she took a shower. She finally fell asleep around two in the morning and here it was nine in the morning, seven hours later. She groaned and turned over onto her stomach before looking over at the night stand and staring at the small, old book that was there but her mind refused to register what is was. Sitting up, she glanced at her shoulder and ran her hand over her birthmark to feel...well she felt nothing except her own skin. How did he manage to make her almost orgasm when all he did was touch her birthmark? It had never bothered her until last night and that is what occupied her thoughts the most before she fell asleep. Cleo shook her head and got out of the bed, walking into the small kitchen and started the coffee. As she waited, she chewed on her lower lip and drummed her fingers on the countertop before the coffee maker dinged, signaling that it was done. She walked back into her room, sipping her coffee before staring at the book. Her father had wanted her to go through it without anyone being present. It wasn't a spell book, that was for sure. Her father had watched one too many movies. Sitting on the bed, she stared at the book while tapping her mug.

“Fuck it.” Cleo set her mug down and picked up the book. Leaning back on the bed, she opened the book and started reading. Her eyes widened a she read. Some of the words were hard to make out considering it had been buried under sand but for the most part it was readable. It was going to take some time to make out what it all said but considering it was a puzzle, it shouldn’t take her no time at all.

He had ran around all morning, making sure that the workers were working at a steady pace and not getting themselves hurt in anyway. Talking every now and then with Len and Jack about the next step in what should be done next or what part of the temple should be searched. Of course he new everything about the temples but he wouldn't tell them that. His mind had went back to last night, the way Cleo had turned him on in the club to the mark that was on her arm. It definitely took a lot of self control to pull away from her and not give into what their bodies craved. Ramses shook his head and glanced up as the dark haired beauty ran in with determination in her eyes as she grabbed the old man's arm and pulled him to the side, whispering something to him as she held up a small book in her hand. Squinting his eyes slightly, his blood ran cold at what she held before composing himself. Ramses was positive that she wouldn't be able to read the contents inside but than again, it was Cleo that he was talking about and she wore his mark, so it wouldn't surprise him if she was able to read the book. He watch her walk out of the temple groaning inwardly as her shorts clung her ass and hips. Damn her and her clothes. Taking a calming breath, he went back to work to take his mind off her and the book. As long as he didn't have to spend too much time around her right now, he should be fine.

“Ramses.” What did the old man want now? Turning around he watched Jack walk up to him with excitement in his eyes. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

“What's up?”

“I want you to stay with Cleo at all times.” He raised a brow at this.

“Mind telling me why?” Jack pulled Ramses away from the sight so they were out of earshot.

“Cleo is going through Ra’s diary. She's going to decipher what is in it to the best of her ability but now she is more valuable to Ra than ever.” Ramses narrowed his eyes behind his glasses. They shouldn't have found the damn book at all. The fact that they did made him realize how much was at stake. Nodding his head, he walked out of the temple and looked around to see one of the larger tents only had one flap opened. She wasn't really good at hiding. That or she just didn't care.

Reading through the diary was more of a pain in the ass than she thought. A lot of the words were able to be deciphered but part from that the rest were hard to initiate considering the fact that some of the words were no longer there thanks to wear and tear from it being under the sand for so long. It was going to take a lot more time than she originally thought but she didn't have to worry for another two weeks. Cleo had gotten excited by what her dad had found and the moment it was clear what this book was, she had to tell him. The look on his face was beyond that of one a child on Christmas day. The bright light dimmed from the flap of the tent being closed and she knew she wasn't alone. She ignored the small tingle her birthmark was giving off and figured her dad had come to check on her.

“I thought you wanted me to be alone while I was working on this?” She didn't bother to look up and turned the page trying to at least get a clear of what one of the dates where about.

“Now why would I want that?” That masculine voice sent a shiver down her spine and made her look up.

“I didn't realize it was you. And I thought I told you not to wear your sunglasses around me.” She frowned.

“Yet, you're wearing yours.” She rolled her eyes, glad he couldn't see her do it, before raising a brow at him.

“Why are you here? I figured my dad and brother would have you running around in there.”

“The old man took me off those duties and officially made me you're bodyguard.” That got her attention.

“Bodyguard for what?”

“He believes Ra will he after you now, since not only do you have his mark but also his book. He believes that you’re valuable to the god.” Of all the ridiculous things to say that had to be one of them. Speaking of which, something had been bothering her since she woke up this morning and she couldn't help but let her gaze wonder over him. It was strange to her how she had responded to him when all he did was touch her birthmark.

“Ramses,” she chewed on her lip before rubbing the mark on her shoulder, “how is it that you knew what to do last night with my birthmark?” He slightly tilted his head as that damn smirk appeared on his face.

“Why, did you enjoy it?” She rolled her eyes once again. Of course he couldn't give her a straight answer. She looked back at the book and began reading it once again as she replied.

“I'm very good at faking it asshat.”

“Are you saying you didn't enjoy it?” she bit the inside of her lip to keep from smiling.

“What's there to enjoy if there wasn't anything there to begin with?” It was quiet. Cleo figured he left before she felt a presence behind her.

“Are you sure you felt nothing?” His husky voice sounded in her ear and it made her slightly shiver. This was not a good idea. Whatever game he was playing was a dangerous one yet she couldn't help but feel like she wanted to play along.

He didn't miss the way her body reacted to his voice. He had to smile as he stood behind her. Part of was due to the mark she bared.

“I'm more than sure. Now if you don't mind, I have work to do.” Cleo’s voice came out a little breathless, making him smirk. Try as she might, she wouldn't be able to control herself long the more she stayed near him. He nuzzled his face into her neck and lightly brushed his lips against her ear making her shudder.

“Then keep working. After all, you're not affected by me, remember.” he couldn't help the smirk as she grumbled slightly before trying to go back to reading. Key word, trying. Ramses lightly licked her right below her ear as she sucked in a breath. So that was a spot on her. He couldn't help chuckle at her attempts to ignore him. After a few minutes of messing with her, he felt a little disappointed when she got up and walked to the other side of the temple until she stretched out. Her tank top rode up slightly and he noticed part of a tattoo on her back that was close to her hip.

“What time is it?” He glanced up to see how bright the sun was shining on the tent.

“About 2 in the afternoon.” she groaned and rubbed her face, “You wanna go grab lunch?”

“Fine but you’re paying.” he chuckled and walked towards the opening and grabbed her before she walked out, making her crash into his chest. The blush on her cheeks made him chuckle and the little hit she sent to his arm made him burst out laughing.

He drove them to a small diner on the outskirts of the city and all along the drive she bantered back and forth with him due to his remarks about last night. Sitting down in a booth, she looked out the window ignoring the very man that sat across from her. Cleo had to bite her lip from laughing at the frown that appeared on his face as she glanced at him from the corner of her eye. Ramses was cute at times and when he wasn’t looking, she would steal some glances. It amazed her that he acted so care free when it was just the two of them and yet seemed shut off when he was around other people. He was definitely a puzzle, yet there was something about him that bothered her. Ramses always acted like there was going to be someone that was going to jump out of the shadows at any moment and it worried her.

“Tell me, Cleo, why did you choose to work at a museum?” her eyes widen slightly at the unexpected question. Turning in her seat to face him, she was shocked as hell to see him with his sunglasses off. Damn him for sending her hormones out of whack. She shook her head to clear her mind.

“I’m not sure how to answer that.” he furrowed his brows.

“What do you mean?”

“There are so many answers to that.” she was trying not to smile and starting to fail. From the look on ramses face, she could only guess that he was finding this just as amusing as she did.

“Enlighten me.” They both leaned forwarded a little and Cleo placed her arms on the table as a waitress came by and took their orders real quick. Once she left, Cleo turned back to the conversation at hand.

“Well there's the history behind it, it can be looked at as art considering some of the items are statues and ancient writing then there is also the stories or legends that are behind them as well.” She wanted to laugh at the look on his face but she just smiled, “but for me, I think it’s more of knowledge I get from just being around the items and the smiling or astonishing looks I get when people come in to see what we have.” A blush crept up to her cheeks when he gave her the most adorable smile she had ever seen. She looked away and leaned back in her seat just as the waitress came with their food before leaving again. She sighed as they began to eat in silence. Ramses was definitely different but it was strange how easy she reacted to him. Even with just a small glance her way, she would feel her cheeks heat up. And her birthmark was giving off light, almost enjoyable, tingles. This whole situation was confusing and she couldn't help feeling that there was something she was missing.
