Chapter 105 - Gone With The Wind
Recap
“Okay. You knew she wasn’t on the kingdom’s side when you made her your guard, didn’t you?” Sonny asked as he sat at a table across from ours.
Windy darkly chuckled. “Ever heard of keeping your enemies closer than your friends? Yeah, I knew she was a lap dog to Dean, her true mate.”
“Good.” Sonny leaned over and pulled out a paper, looking it over quickly. “Now, what new powers have you two received?”
Windy’s POV
I looked over to Ares and smiled at him. We didn’t have one power kind of like the other but we had the same power. “We can burn brighter than the sun without it ever touching us.”
“What? Both of you have the same power? How?” Sonny asks, his voice shaky, not knowing if it was natural or not.
I heard movement behind me and turned swiftly and stopped any offense I was reaching out to do.
“Well, hello you to you too, Windy,” the Moon Goddess, my grandmother said, waving her hand a little to me.
I laughed at her childish actions. “Well, hello to you too, grandmother.”
She looked toward Sonny. “Did you really think she would have an unnatural power? Do you think I would let it happen to her?” She asked Sonny, crossing her arms over her chest, giving Sonny a look of disapproval.
“Uh-”
“-Uh, really? Don’t ever doubt me, Sonny. You, of all people, should know better to think I would allow anything to happen to either of you or your mates.”
“I’m sorry. I thought someone had messed with her powers. I promise not to let it happen again,” Sonny quickly said as tears ran down his face.
I knew our grandmother had never questioned us or made us feel as if she was scolding us. I knew he was upset at himself for failing to believe in me or our Moon Goddess. He was weeping and holding himself and I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran to him and engulfed him in a hug.
“Don’t cry. Please don’t cry. It’s okay, Sonny,” I whispered as I hugged him, tears in my eyes, begging to be released.
My grandmother came over and hugged us both. “I’m sorry, too. I was upset and took it out on you. It’s okay, my grandson.” She wiped his tears off his face and hugged him again.
I heard Sonny clear his throat. “I’m sorry, too. I’ve never questioned you before and I won’t do it again. I swear this to you, grandma, and to you too, Windy.”
I smiled at him and punched him in the arm. “Damn straight you won’t or we may end up in the sparring circle.” He laughed and hugged our grandmother and me.
I knew she had lifted the burden off his heart but I knew he knew she had too. I was glad everything was okay now. “Okay, so, we are having the trail for the wolves this afternoon. I need you and Ares to write up your testimony, okay?”
“No problem,” both Ares and I said, smiling at each other after we both spoke, causing me to laugh and Sonny to shake his head, a small smile on his face.
“I can’t wait to meet my mate,” Sonny commented as he smiled at us, a wistful sigh escaping his lips.
“You won’t have to wait long,” I heard my grandmother mutter as her eyes grew wide at her words. “Damn werewolf hearing.”
I started laughing and couldn’t stop, Ares and Sonny laughing with me. I was clutching my belly, tears streaming down my face, trying to catch breaths in between the loud laughing, an unattractive snort following behind a few of the laughs. I finally got my breathing back under control as I wiped the tears from my eyes. I noticed our grandmother was gone.
“Where did our grandma go?” Sonny asked as he looked around.
“She’s gone with the wind. I knew she wouldn’t stay after she dropped the bomb on us. It’s okay though, at least you know you will meet your mate soon. Keep her safe, Sonny, you know I’ll help you in any way I can,” I tell him, a smile on my face, happy to know my brother will soon meet his mate, a frown marred my face. “But, make sure she’s your true mate. Don’t let someone fool you, please.”
“I promise I won’t. I know what the women here are like. I’ve already had several women looking at me as if I was a full course meal,” Sonny spat out, a shudder running through his body, one I could see a mile away.
Sonny handed Ares and I the paperwork we needed to fill out as he started on some of the paperwork he was working on. It didn’t take us long to write up our testimony, knowing this wouldn't be over until the trial. I knew I would need to make sure they were under a truth spell or Darla would lie with everything in her.
“Is she going to be under a true spell, Sonny?” I asked what was on my mind, not sure if it would be allowed. I hoped so. There were too many people in the cells who could lie and believe they were telling the truth.
“Yes. As King, I am allowed to truth spell all of them, but I have an idea to put some of the people under Dean’s reach under the same truth spell. He will play us for the truth spell being false, but I’m going to send one of my own men, men I know for a fact are loyal, a man Darla has been hitting on other than your mate. He’s agreed for our kingdom to help out, so Dean will growl at the man hitting on his mate in front of him, well, he will get mad.”
“Well, it should work.” I nodded at him. ’But, if it doesn’t work he will still be under a truth spell as should everyone at the court hearing. Do understand what I’m saying, Sonny? We will find out who’s on the kingdom’s side and who’s against it, plus, you will know for a fact who your mate is. What say you?”
“Not a bad idea. Now, I know why you’re the Beta. I like it. Let’s make sure they are done before they walk into the court. How do you want to do this?” Sonny asked me as I thought of a way to spell them before they walked into the court.
I turned to Ares. “Ares and I can spell them as they walk into the court. Right, Ares?” I mischievously asked as Ares’ mouth dropped open in shock.
“Are you sure, Windy? I’ve never done a sp-”
“-Yes you have. You spelled our room when I was unable to due to the pain of my power coursing through me,” I replied as a soft smile lit up my face. “You need to follow my thought pattern. You should be able to hear what my mind is saying or thinking.”
“I’ve never read your mind. I was trying to give you your own space,” Ares whispered as he hugged me to him.
“I’m sure. We need to do this, love. Can you back me up and help? Oh, and I have cookies, welcome to the dark side,” I chuckled. “Just kidding, but I do have energy bars for us to power through, okay?”
Ares nodded and smiled a blinding smile, making my heart sing. “Let’s do this then. I can help. Finally.”
I heard Sonny chuckle and my face heated up, red reaching my ears. “I can’t wait to meet my mate. You two make it seem as if you’ve known each other for years. I want the same thing and can’t wait to get it.”
“It’s more than I had imagined. I always wondered why mates seemed as if they could float on the wind of their love.”
“Okay, I’m going to send in my tailor. Do not touch any of the vestments without him telling you to. He told me some of them were made with poisons. I’m sure we will know which ones without any trouble. You can trust him,” Sonny explained as I gasped at the nerve of some people.
I spelled my mate even more than I had. I wanted him to be immune to any poisons he may be in contact with. I was surprised to realize he copied the spell from me and spelled me more than I had been.
“Good to see your mate protecting you even more. He catches on quickly. Af if he were born a werewolf. Good job, Ares,” Sonny praised, a small smile on his face.
“Incoming,” I said calmly as my mate and Sonny ducked, making me chuckle at them.
