Chapter 31
When they arrived at Jonah's ranch home in Montana, Zoe was fully awake and amazed at their location.
"Cool?" she asked as they got out of their rental vehicle.
"Do you mean where is this?" Rachel asked her with an understanding smile.
"Bye," replied Zoe with a nod.
"This is where my friend and his family live," Derek answered. "Let's go inside and say hello to them, shall we?" "Okie," said Zoe.
Derek scooped her up into his arms and they approached the front door. The bodyguards were to remain in the cars until proper arrangements could be made for their accommodation. The front door swung open and a tall, dark-haired man with an Asian woman came out of the country home. The house was built on a large expanse of land that seemed to go on forever.
There was a ranch on the left side of the land, and Rachel could see some horses grazing in the field. On the right side, there was a huge vegetable farm and an orchard on the far end of it. The place was absolutely blissful! "Welcome!" Jonah greeted them enthusiastically. "Hello, little pumpkin. You must be Zoe. It's so good to finally meet you!"
Zoe smiled at him.
"Hello, Rachel. I am Jonah, and this is my wife, Vanessa," said Jonah.
"Pleased to meet you, Jonah," she said and shook his hand. "Hello, Vanessa. Thank you for allowing us to come here."
"You are welcome, Rachel," said Vanessa with a bright smile. She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Rachel. "I am so happy to finally meet you."
"And I am Derek, whom nobody cares about," said Derek dryly, and everyone laughed.
"Oh, please, stop being dramatic. Now come here," said Vanessa, hugging him.
"Hey, buddy. It's good to see you again," said Jonah, shaking his friend's hand. "Come on in, guys. We were just about to have breakfast. Myrah and Michelle are waiting for us at the dining table."
They followed the couple inside and Rachel was immediately taken by the comeliness of the big house. The living area was furnished with warm colors and comfy-looking furniture that made it seem like a very inviting home. "You have a beautiful home, Vanessa," Rachel commented. "It's so warm and inviting."
"Thank you, Rachel," Vanessa beamed. "I'm glad you like it."
When they got to the dining room, they met two adorable girls sitting at the table, chatting animatedly. When they saw the guests, their attention zeroed in on Zoe who was still being carried by her dad. Myrah gasped. "Is this Zoe? She's so cute!"
Zoe giggled.
"Ladies, where are your manners?" Their mother asked.
Michelle jumped out of her chair and ran to Derek. "Hi, Uncle Derek. Do you want to see Fifi the Pony? She's very big now!"
"Hi, Uncle Derek!" Said Myrah, coming to hug him too. "Hi, uh..."
"Rachel," said Rachel. "I'm Zoe's mom."
Myrah gasped again. "Are you Uncle Derek's wife?"
"No!" Derek and Rachel said at the same time, and they both looked embarrassed afterward.
"Myrah, dear, please go back to your seat and stop bothering our guests," her mother said with a stiff grin.
"I'll go and grab Michelle's old high seat for Zoe," Jonah offered and left immediately.
"Please, have a seat," said Vanessa to Rachel and Derek.
They took the seats opposite the girls and sat beside each other. Johah showed up then with a pink and white high chair that he placed beside Rachel.
Once Zoe was comfortably settled into her seat, Vanessa went into the kitchen and returned with two domestic staff who greeted the guests politely before setting the meals on the table.
Breakfast was bacon and eggs, toast, blueberry pancakes, fruit salad, coffee for the adults, and orange juice for the children.
"Everything on this table was grown on this land, except the coffee," said Vanessa, proudly.
"That's impressive," said Rachel. She took a sip of her coffee and sighed. "That tastes divine."
"Lavazza to the rescue!" Vanessa laughed. "I see you like Italian coffee just like me. I'm glad we have that in common. We can sit at the patio in the back and swap juicy gossip over cups of coffee in the evenings." "But Mom, you said ladies don't gossip," Myrah reminded her mother.
"Yes, I did say that," Vanessa answered her Smarty-Pants daughter. "What I meant to say just now was that Rachel and I would have some grownup conversations while drinking coffee."
"Zoe, would you like to see my pony?" Michelle asked the toddler.
Zoe simply stared at her.
"Can she ride on a pony?" Michelle asked Derek.
"Nope, but I guess you can start teaching her today," said Derek with an encouraging grin. "I'm sure Zoe would like that."
"Will your bodyguards be staying on the property while you guys are here?" Jonah asked his friend.
"I was thinking of arranging an Air BnB apartment for them nearby," said Derek before biting into a piece of crisply fried bacon. "No need for that. We have two spare cottages in the back where they can stay," said Jonah.
"That's mighty kind of you, buddy. Thanks!"
"I'm sure you won't be needing their services while you're here, but it's better to have them close by just in case," said Jonah.
"I'll send the kitchen staff to get their breakfast ready and serve them in the cottages," said Vanessa, before excusing herself to go to the kitchen.
Rachel was impressed by the couple's welcoming nature. They were doing everything possible to make everyone comfortable even though Derek had only notified them of this visit a few hours ago.
Now she understood why Derek regarded Jonah and his family as the only family he had. They indeed treated him like one of them and not just a friend.
When Vanessa returned to the table, she informed them that the bodyguards had been moved into the cottages and were now settling down to have their breakfast.
"Thank you for doing that," said Derek to Vanessa.
"Oh, stop saying thank you," she said with a wave of her hand. "It was no trouble at all."
After breakfast, the Bransons offered to give them a tour of the estate. They started with the ranch which boasted two large barns, a stable with four horses and a pony, and a fish pond. They also had chickens, turkeys, cows, goats, pigs, and ducks.
Then they went to the farm to admire the flourishing plants which included cabbages, tomatoes, peppers, kale, strawberries, blueberries, carrots, lettuce, onions, radishes, and potatoes. There was also the herb garden comprising thyme, rosemary, chives, mint, sage, basil, oregano, and dill. In the orchard, there were apples, oranges, lemons, and cherries.
"This place is an absolute paradise!" Rachel gushed.
"I agree," laughed Vanessa. "Thank you!"
"This was all Vanessa, mind you," said Jonah. "I don't have a head for farming but my amazing wife here knows all about that, so she deserves all the compliments."
"I'll take it," she said with a giggle. "I grew up on a farm, and I simply loved the feeling of being so close to nature, so it was only natural that I make my home in a place like this. I had such fond memories of farm life while I was growing up and I wanted my children to have that experience too, so here we are."
"This place never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I visit," said Derek. "It has such a calming effect on me."
"And that is why you should visit more often," said Jonah.
"Can we go and ride Fifi now?" Asked Michelle.

"I think we should wait for the stable hand to come around first," said Vanessa. "He would be in a better position to give Zoe her first riding lesson."
"I can teach her!" Said Michelle.
"I know you can, darling, but we would all feel more comfortable with Paul teaching her for now," her mother said calmly. "And then you can ride with her afterward, ok?"
"Ok," said Michelle with a pout.
"Who is Paul?" Rachel asked.
"The stable hand who tutors them on horseback riding," Vanessa explained.
"Can we take Zoe to our doll house?" Asked Myrah.
"Of course," said Vanessa. "Now off you go, girls!"
"Come on, Zoe. Let's go to the doll house," said Michelle, taking Zoe's hand and leading the toddler away.
To Rachel's surprise, Zoe gladly followed the girls without hesitation. She was running off with them, laughing happily.
"The doll house is upstairs in the room that used to be the nursery," Vanessa explained. "I'm sure Zoe will have a swell time playing there with the girls."
"So, are you ready to have a look at the famous Fifi?" Jonah asked Derek. "You bought her, so you might as well come with me and have a look at the sucker."
Derek hesitated. "Would you two like to join us?" he asked the women.
"Absolutely not," said Vanessa. "I don't want to spend the rest of the day smelling like horses. You two, go. Rachel and I will go and feed the fishes in the pond. Trust me, Rachel, you'll find it very relaxing." "What if she wants to see Fifi?" Jonah asked stubbornly.
"I think I'll visit Fifi another time," said Rachel with a smile.
"Ah, well. Have fun with the fishes then," he said with a shrug.
"See you later," said Derek before following his friend.
As the men walked away toward the barn, Vanessa looped her arm with Rachel's and said, "Don't worry, Juliet. Your Romeo will be fine without you for a few minutes."
Rachel giggled like a girl. "I'm sure he will be."
"Come, it's time for you and me to get to know each other better. I believe I have a lot of catching up to do."
