Chapter 13
Later that night as she settled into bed to sleep, Rachel finally allowed herself to think about what had happened that morning.
She is still reeling from the shock of seeing Derek after over one year since their last encounter in his office. Now that he had tracked her down, what was she going to do? She had already made her peace with being a single mom and raising her child alone, but now that Derek was back in the picture, what does that mean for her and Zoe? And why was he suddenly so apologetic after he'd already made it clear to her that he never wanted to have anything to do with her? What had changed him?
With a sigh, Rachel turned on her side and listened to the rain beating down on her roof and slapping against her closed windows.
It was a cool, rainy night, and like most nights, Rachel wished she had a companion in bed to give her bodily warmth.
Moments like these made her detest being single, but when she remembered how drama-free her life was, she was glad to be alone. "I'm not alone, I've got Zoe," she whispered to herself. "It's me and Zoe against the world."
Feeling comforted by her thoughts, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to drift into a peaceful sleep.

The stars were not aligning in Derek's favor and he was pissed about that. Of course, he hadn't expected Rachel to be delighted to see him. He had hoped that she would at least let him render the heartfelt speech he had prepared and rehearsed repeatedly on his flight to Atlanta. Instead, she had slammed her door in his face and left him outside looking like a fool. She hadn't even allowed him to see the child - his child.
He had thought about going back to her place this evening but it might start to seem as if he was harassing her, and he didn't want that. Perhaps he could go again tomorrow morning but without the flowers. That felt corny as hell and he'd felt silly presenting them to her. Maybe he should buy some gifts for the child, that might soften Rachel's heart toward him.
Derek sighed. He never thought that he would find himself in this kind of situation.
He had always been so careful when messing around with women, but for whatever reason, he had let his guard down with Rachel. Now here he was, paying the price for his carelessness.
Now he had a child that he had unknowingly rejected but now wanted. Wasn't that the most selfish thing ever? His father would be disappointed in him if he was alive to see what Derek had done.
He needed to redeem himself by getting involved in Zoe's life. The child needed a father figure in her life, and he wasn't going to stand back and watch Rachel struggle to raise their daughter alone.
He had already let her down by not accepting her pregnancy or being there for her all through the journey till the birth of Zoe, so, he was determined to make up for the lost time by being available and present in the child's life. The thought of being a father terrified him seriously, but he refused to back down from it because it was a challenge, and Derek Fraser loved to conquer challenges.
With his mind made up, he picked up his jacket and walked out of his hotel room like a man on a mission.

Zoe's first birthday was in two days and Rob was planning a themed party for her. He had run through several ideas with Rachel, but she had rejected all of his suggestions so far.
"You seem to have forgotten that this party isn't for you," said Rob sulkily. "Besides, Zoe is a baby and she's going to like whatever we do, so why all the fuss?"
"Yes, you are right, Robbie. Zoe is a baby, my baby," said Rachel with a grin.
"She is our baby," Rob corrected.
"What about an Alice in Wonderland party?" Taylor suggested.
"You know Zoe loves to play tea party. We'd have the backyard set up like a garden with little kiddies' tables and chairs and pink tea sets with tons of snacks and candies. It would be divine." "I love it!" Rachel squealed in delight.
"You're kidding, right?" Said Rob, with a straight face.
"I have literally suggested hundreds of party ideas which you rejected, but Taylor makes one suggestion and you accept it? I don't believe this."
"Because Taylor is observant and Taylor is Zoe's bestie," said Taylor with a smug look on his handsome face.
"You're grounded," said Rob to his boyfriend. To Rachel, he asked, "Are we really doing that?"
"Of course, why not? Zoe does love playing tea parties. She would love a tea party-themed bash, trust me."
"She wouldn't even remember any of this," Rob protested.
"Don't be a sore loser, Rob. Get to work," Rachel laughed.

The doorbell rang, interrupting their playful banter.
"Are you expecting someone?" Rob asked Rachel.
"Nope," she replied.
"I'll get it," Taylor offered when the doorbell rang again.
At the front door, Derek's carefully placed smile melted when Rachel's door opened and a tall, African-American man appeared in front of him with a quizzical expression on his face.
"Yes, how may I help you?" Taylor asked the dashing dude who was gawking at him.
Derek cleared his throat self-consciously, trying to recover from his initial shock. "Um, I'm here to see Rachel."
"And who are you?"
Derek blinked, surprised by the guy's audacity. Who was he, by the way? Rachel's boyfriend?
"I am Derek Fraser."
"Yeah... so, am I supposed to know you? Although I must admit that you sort of look familiar, I'm sure I've never met you. I'm really good with faces."
"I see. Is Rachel inside?"
"That depends."
"On what?"
"On whether she's expecting you or not. Is she?"
Derek was trying his best to remain cordial to this obnoxious man, but he was beginning to get annoyed with his stalling tactics. He was tempted to put down the bags of gifts he was holding and sucker punch this pretty boy in the face. "Please, I need to see Rachel," said Derek with forced patience.
The door opened wider and Rachel appeared, dressed in an oversized T-shirt, with her hair piled up on her head in a messy bun. Derek was surprised at how his body instantly reacted to the sight of her.

Man, she was beautiful!
"What are you doing here, Derek?" she asked in a very unfriendly tone.
"Hi, Rachel," he said with a warm smile. "I wanted a do-over of yesterday's meeting. I know I took you by surprise and that was probably why you didn't want to talk to me."
"I didn't want to talk to you because both of us have nothing to say to each other. Please, stop showing up at my doorstep unannounced. I don't find it funny or cute."
"I bought some gifts for Zoe," he said quickly as she attempted to close the door.
Rachel paused, surprised. "How did you know her name?"
Derek sighed. "Well, it's a long story, but the summary is that I came across your YouTube channel and watched some of your recent videos. That was where I saw Zoe." "And that's why you came here?" Rachel asked coldly.
"Yes, Rachel. I came here for you and Zoe," said Derek, softly. "Please, let me see her."
Rachel scoffed. "You are unbelievable, Derek. You denied me when I needed you the most, and now you waltz back into my life and expect me to just forget what you did and welcome you? Seriously?" "Rachel, I am deeply sorry for how I treated you back then. I have realized my mistakes and I am ready to make amends."
The door opened wider and Rob showed up at the entrance. "Wait, who is this guy?" he asked.
He'd been eavesdropping on the exchange between his sister and this man and the story was starting to confuse him.
"His identity doesn't matter," said Rachel, dismissively.
"You have to leave now, Derek, and I mean it this time, don't ever come back here. Zoe and I are doing just fine and we don't need you interrupting our lives with your nonsense. Please, leave now." "For real, Rachel. Who's this guy?" Asked Taylor. He wanted this mystery to be solved once and for all.
"I am Zoe's father," Derek announced. "And I am here to see my daughter."
