Chapter 19
Alexandra’s POV
I sat with Larus in the trees outside of Emma’s house. The past few days there has been a presence of angels around us and her house, so Larus suggested we should watch over her. Of course, I didn’t tell her because I didn’t want to freak her out.
I looked over at Larus as I smelt an angel getting closer to us, “Why the hell do they keep coming here? She isn’t even home from work yet.”
Larus glanced over at me but kept his focus towards the direction the smell was coming from, “They are just checking it out… We broke an angel law and to them there has to be a punishment. Even though we aren’t technically one of them, they still expect me to follow their laws.”
I shook my head, “This is bullshit.”
“I believe they think she is a threat. It is very rare that we have connections with humans like this… As long as we are near her, they will not try anything.”
I stayed silent as the smell came closer but it slowly backed off again, “Larus, what is the punishment?”
His eyes snapped over to me then he shook his head, “There won’t be a punishment.”
“Please, Larus, I want to know. She is my mate and even though I don’t have strong feelings for her yet, I still want to know what I am protecting her from.”
He looked down, “The penalty for a human seeing what we really are or seeing what we do is the death of that human. And, since we are protecting her, we will be put on trial to determine our punishment. The angels believe that the only way to keep it a secret is to kill the human who knows because they cannot be trusted, mate or not.”
I watched as Emma’s truck pulled into her driveway, “They won’t touch her.”
Emma jumped out of her truck but stopped and looked up into the tree we were in. She sighed, “Alexandra, I can feel your presence.”
Larus laughed and stretched his wings out, “I will see you later then. Have fun with your mate, fledgling.”
He took off from the tree, leaving me staring down at my mate.
Thanks for the help, Larus.
I sighed and morphed into my human before jumping from the tree. I landed on my feet in front of my mate while she stared me down, “So you are a stalker now?”
“Ummm… not really.”
She shook her head, “Why are you here then? I felt that you were worried about something today.”
I was about to answer until I felt the presence of about three angels getting closer to us, “Time to get inside.”
I grabbed her arm and pulled her with me towards her cabin.
“Alex?!”
I let go of her arm when I slammed the door shut, locking it behind us. I looked out the window, seeing the faint outlines of the angels, and shut the curtains.
Emma stood in the middle of the room watching my movements, “Alex, what is wrong?”
I went to the other windows, closing the curtains, “Angels.”
I walked back over to her, “Listen to me. Go lock yourself into your closet until I tell you it is safe… Don’t come out for anyone else.”
“Alex, what is going on?”
I morphed into my evil and focused onto the door, “Emma do what I said.”
My tone was a little harsher than I wanted it to be and I instantly felt bad about it but she went off into her room.
She didn’t have to hide herself, the angels know she is here, but with her out of the room I can focus everything to protect her. I listened in, hearing the flapping of their wings getting closer. My wings snapped out with my tail flicking back and forth. I heard one of them land by the door while the others still flapped outside. The one by the door scratched against it then the sound of all of them flying away filled my ears.
They are taunting me. Those assholes.
After about five minutes, the world around the cabin was silent again. I let out a breath and morphed into my human. I went into Emma’s room and leaned next to the closet, “You can come out. It’s safe.”
The door slowly creaked open until she slipped out. She looked pissed as she glared at me, “Alexandra, you better tell me why the hell I have to hide in my own home away from angels.”
“Emma, it’s better if you don’t-”
She cut me off, “If I don’t what, Alexandra? It is my life you are talking about. So I think it is better if I know.”
“They are coming to kill you.”
Her eyes widened, “What?! Why? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
I looked down at my feet, “You didn’t but I did when I let you come to see Gabe’s death… It is against their laws for a human to witness that.”
“But you are not one of them.”
“That is true. Larus thinks they are using that as a justification to kill you. They feel you are a threat to them being connected to me so they want to get rid of you. But, as an angel they can’t just kill whenever so it was just a convenience to them that we did something against their laws at the same time they realized our connection.”
She shook her head, “That is so fucked up. They are angels and I am human aren’t they supposed to protect me or something.”
“They don’t care… Now, I think you should probably come stay with me and Larus until this is over. I can’t protect that well here.”
“How long is that going to take? I have to go to work almost everyday.”
“I don’t know but, I need to keep you safe. I can fly you to work. Please, Emma.”
She thought it over for a minute, “Okay fine but on one condition.”
“Yes?”
“No more keeping things from me. Even if it involves a whole bunch of angels wanting to kill me.”
I nodded, “Deal.”
She left the room to pick her stuff up.
“Larus, Emma is going to stay with us for a while.”
“No problem, fledgling. I will make a room for her.”
Emma came back out of her bedroom with a backpack and another bag, “Can you fly with this stuff?”
I morphed into my evil, “I should be fine.”
I slung the bag over my back and in between my wings while she put the backpack on. I picked her up and wrapped my tail around her like always. She ran her hand across part of my tail and laughed, “You really want me to be safe, don’t you?”
I shrugged, “Yes… but I normally fly with my tail around my leg so this is more comfortable while carrying you.”
I walked with her outside, feeling Emma shiver. I looked down as her teeth started chattering, “Are you cold?”
She nodded, “Yeah, your skin is a little chilly but mixed with the weather out here; it is really cold.”
“I will fly fast so we can warm you up.”
I unfolded my wings and listened around the area for angels.
They are gone for now.
I pushed us both into the air and towards home.
