Chapter 7
“Yeah sure. I would do that.”
Ending the call, Claire put the receiver back when suddenly the door burst open revealing a raging Emma. Claire was startled as Emma had always been respectful and courteous but today, she just barged into her office without knocking. What shocked her more was the unadulterated rage shining in her blue hues which looked like an ominous innuendo. She was giving her dangerous vibes.
But somehow, Claire maintained her composure and shot Emma a stern look.
“What’s this Emmaline?”
She opened her mouth to berate her for her misbehavior but Emma beat her to it. She slammed the door shut and approached her with predatory steps.
“I should be the one asking this, Ms. Williams”, she retorted making Claire gulp.
“Secretary for the CEO? Are you kidding me? I signed the contract to work as a tech expert not as someone’s assistant. You know I am a college student and I can’t work in the morning. On top of that, I know nothing about business. I never disrespected you and even did your pending work which is strictly forbidden as per the company’s policies, Ms. Williams. I thought you understand me but no, just to earn a few brownie points, you gave my name for this secretary recruitment. Without my knowledge, you scheduled my interview for the morning. Now tell me what should I do? I won’t skip college just for this nonsense. Get this straight in your head”, Emma spoke with clenched teeth. She was seething in anger.
Claire shook her head before standing up, “I know Emma but it’s not my fault. I can’t go against Boss’ orders. I was also shocked by the way he inquired about you. I thought you guys know each other but after seeing your reaction, I am sure-”
“Hold on, what do you mean he inquired about me?” Emma cut her off midway.
Claire looked at her, “Will you believe me if I say that Mr. Knight was looking for the blue-eyed girl?”
Flashback
“Trash, Trash, Trash!!”
Damien shouted while toppling the files on the floor. He was so furious at the moment that he feared he would bring the entire building down. Fisting his hair, Damien pulled it harshly and screamed in frustration.
The Alpha was sulking since morning. He also had a hard time believing that he was missing a girl so badly whom he met just yesterday. The sane part of him weaved different methods to convince his obdurate heart but with passing hours, the restlessness took a toll on his senses, and now he only wanted to see her. The research of the secretary was just a way to find his anodyne, the blue-eyed girl who was stuck in his mind since the moment he had seen her.
Damien couldn’t deny his feelings anymore. After having a furious polemic with his inner beast, he finally concluded that he would go mad without seeing her. That silver hair beauty performed witchcraft on the Alpha and had him enraptured. She without doing anything became his remedy and just like a drug addict, he was craving her.
Damien thought that it was only because of her sweet scent. His wolf had gone berserk and would only be satisfied after relishing her fragrance.
Rather than he knew that his Doll would soon become his furor, his new passion, his obsession.
To sate his buddy, Damien came up with the idea to get the biodata of all his employees. Maybe he could get a clue about her.
Damien went through all the two thousand files stacked on his desk within four hours because of his super speed. But his efforts went down the drain as the required file was still out of his reach.
Incensed and exhausted, negative thoughts started flooding his mind. Maybe the staff was deliberately hiding her. They don’t want him to meet her.
The Alpha let out a low growl. His patience was giving up. Those mortals had managed to get on his last nerve since morning. Now, if what he is thinking is the truth then their doom would be on the way.
Suddenly a knock on the door grabbed his attention.
“Come in”, His sonorous voice boomed jarring the four walls. The door slowly opened revealing an anxious Claire.
The tension in the room was so thick that she could feel her legs shivering. Grabbing the knob tightly with her fingers, she slowly took in the condition of his office that had turned upside down. With papers sprawled all over the silk carpet, she wondered what got the CEO so riled up.
“Get inside.” Damien gritted when he noticed her glued on her spot. Claire suppressed her fear and walked toward him with staggering steps.
“You asked for me, Boss?”, she spoke while flashing him a small smile. But Damien didn’t return it which made her queasy.
“I think I’ve asked you to provide me the details of every employee.”
Claire was taken aback by his gruff tone. Licking her lips, she spoke, “Boss, I have provided everything. We have around one hundred and fifty employees in the technical section and-“
“DO I LOOK LIKE A FOOL TO YOU??”
Claire flinched hard when Damien shouted at her and slammed his right fist on the table. Jumping to his feet, he threw the red file away making her cower in shock but her heart jumped when her eyes met with his smoldering ones.
“If you give me all the files then where’s that blue-eyed girl? You can’t trick me, Ms. Williams. I keep the full record of my staff. Now better tell me her name or I-“
“Emmaline”
Claire quickly replied. Damien cocked his left brow, “What?”
There was only one girl in the office who had blue eyes. Claire deliberately skipped Emmaline’s file as Emma had signed the contract on the condition that she wouldn’t work in the morning.
Claire had no idea that her Boss was looking for Emmaline only. She still wanted to explain to him but after seeing his outburst, she knew that angering him more would be a terrible idea. So, she chose her words wisely before using them in front of him, “Emmaline Richard Dawson. She is the tech expert but the girl works night shifts, Boss. Moreover, she is a college student that’s why I didn’t recommend her for the post of secretary. A secretary has to accompany you all the time and Emmaline won’t be able to do that.”
Claire kept speaking but Damien was lost in a trance. The only thing he could hear was her name which kept ringing in his mind.
“Emmaline, such a nice name”, Scar enthused. Damien agreed with him. Her name itself consecrated his heart. Exhaling a deep breath, his tensed muscles visibly relaxed as relief coursed through his veins.
Finding no response, Claire looked at Damien only to see his lips stretched in a contented smile. She was flabbergasted by the sudden change in his demeanor. The man who was raging like a bull a few minutes before was now smiling like a Cheshire cat.
“So, that’s her name. Emmaline Richard Dawson”, Damien breathed, his eyes gleaming.
He then shifted his eyes at a confused Claire and let out a chuckle, “It’s alright Ms. Williams. Now go and quickly make a list of the candidates that I’ve chosen for the post of secretary. Also, schedule Emmaline’s interview for tomorrow. I will start the recruitment with the most deserving candidate.”
With that, he sat and ensconced himself in his chair. Claire kept staring at him with wide eyes.
‘Didn’t I tell him that she works as a tech expert? Then how come she is a deserving candidate for his secretary? Did Boss hear me even or not?’
A frown etched on her face.
Something was definitely wrong with him.
Damien looked up and found Claire gawking at him. His jaw clenched when he found the judging glint in her eyes.
“Leave now”. He spoke stoically making her jump back from her reverie. Nodding her head, Claire quickly turned on her heels and left.
End of Flashback
Claire stare at a horrified Emmaline who was too numb to react. Approaching her, she grabbed her cold hands in her warm ones and gave them a light squeeze.
“I know Emmaline, I’ve always used you but please don’t use such harsh words. I don’t know why the CEO was so eager to hire you but it’s just a piece of cake for someone like you, Emma. If you don’t want this job, just tell him your problems. I am sure Boss wouldn’t force you to work for him.” She tried to explain her.
Emma who was lost deep in thoughts finally looked at her. She found a sincere concern in her eyes but now things have started to get out of control. Still, she nodded at Claire who flashed her a sad smile. Removing her hands gently, Emma then turned around and exited the room without saying anything.
