Chapter 47
Chapter 47
The door of Charles‘ office was pushed open by George.
When he saw Valeria, a smile appeared on his face. “Val, you’re here too? Are you here for Charles?”
Valeria nodded. “Yes, Dad.”
George said, “Young people nowadays. It’s not yet time to get off work, but you’re already here to see Charles. What kind of attitude is this?”
He was reprimanding Valeria.
After Valeria ran to him and acted coquettishly, George looked at Charles and asked coldly, “Charles, since Val is here today, I want to ask when are you two going to get engaged?”
Charles was about to speak.
George continued, “I think next week is good. So, we’ll set it for next week!”
Valeria said happily, “Thank you, Dad.”
Charles frowned.
He wanted to refuse because he was busy with work.
George was blunt and directly said, “Charles, originally, your family background is not good enough for my daughter! But what can I say? Val likes you. Besides, the media has previously exposed those bad things about Val, and you helped her clean up the mess. That’s how I see that you like Val as well. And you didn’t forget what you promised me before, did you?”
Charles‘ expression was grim.
Of course, he did not forget what he had promised George.
He had made the promise for the sake of his career because he wanted to stand out and become a superior person. He did not want to be bullied by others at will.
He agreed to be interviewed and identified himself as Josephine’s ex–boyfriend in front of the reporter to confirm that Valeria had never stolen Josephine’s design draft. He told everyone that such a rumor spread because of the relationship. dispute between the three of them.
Charles felt sorry for Josephine about this incident. Valeria had indeed stolen her design draft and even framed Josephine. She used her position to force Josephine to withdraw from the design industry. At that time, he almost wanted to confront
Valeria about it.
But in the end, he had no choice.
He could only betray Josephine again in the end..
When he succeeded, everything he owed Josephine would be compensated a thousandfold. He would spoil her to no extent.
Back then, George was delighted when Charles finished his interview, helped Valeria clean up her reputation, and confirmed everything.
He immediately stopped opposing the marriage between Charles and Valeria. And, at Valeria’s request, he appointed Charles to be the vice president of his company.
But George had one condition. At the time, with a sullen expression, he said to Charles, “Val is my only daughter. Charles, you must promise to be nice to my daughter forever! Well, you guys get engaged first, and I’ll make you the company’s vice president right away. Once you get married and become the Lambert family’s son–in–law, I’ll leave the whole company to you.”
Charles agreed immediately.
However, he did not want to be engaged to Valeria.
In private, when it was only Charles and Valeria, Charles had coaxed Valeria to cause a scene with George.
Charles had said to Valeria. “Honey, I’m a nobody now. I don’t want people to say I’m relying on your family and living off others. Tell your father to let me be the vice president of the company. When I make some achievements, then we’ll get engaged, okay?”
He even purposely mentioned the incident about Valeria in the bar and said that he was not disgusted by it.
Valeria was caught in Charles‘ web.
Under Charles‘ persuasion, she argued with George several times. Finally, George let Charles become the company’s vice president before she was engaged to him.
She even successfully convinced George to let Charles handle some important things and businesses of the company.
But it had been so long since all that.
Yet, Charles kept refusing to get engaged to her.
Valeria grew anxious.
Especially when she noticed that Charles had another woman’s perfume on him and a lipstick mark on his collar.
She did not dare to make a scene with Charles.
Today, Valeria begged George to come over to force Charles to marry her.
At this moment, George looked at Charles and said, “As long as you are engaged to Val, I will promote you to the general manager of the company immediately! Charles, I know you are a smart person.”
Charles sneered in his heart.
He did not like Valeria at all. But for his career, he could accept being engaged to her.
However, he had seen that side of Valeria. There was no way he could still want her.
“But…” he mused.
“All right.”
Charles smiled gently and said, “Mr. Lambert, you are an elder. Hence, you can handle matters related to the engagement of Val and me.”
George was satisfied.
He immediately said to Charles, “The sixteenth a week from now is a good day! Let’s put your and Val’s engagement party on that day.
Charles agreed.
He watched Valeria leave happily, holding George’s arm. His eyes were full of resentment. A week was enough.
Soon, it was a week later.
That night, the engagement party between Valeria and Charles would be held in a grand hotel in Sloummont. George had invited many family and friends for the occasion.
However, at noon, the police suddenly came and took George away for interrogation.
Valeria was very anxious.
She immediately called Charles and asked tearfully, “Charles, what’s going on? How could my father be taken away?”
Charles sneered internally.
On the outside, his voice was gentle as usual when he spoke to Valeria with a smile. “I’ll go to the police station immediately
to see Mr. Lambert.”
“But, Val, even if I bring the company’s lawyer team, I doubt we can get Mr. Lambert out today.”
Valeria asked. “Then what about our engagement party?”
“Let’s delay it first,” answered Charles.
He continued to say to Valeria, “Though today was a good day for the engagement, now that something like this has happened, it’s no longer auspicious. Let’s delay it first. When Mr. Lambert comes out from the police station, we’ll pick another day, okay?”
Valeria had no choice.
She could only agree.
In the end, Charles and Valeria’s engagement was postponed.
As for George, the reason he was taken away by the police was that, as the legal person of the company, he had evaded taxes worth a few hundred thousand dollars. He had to make up for the tax evasion immediately and was sentenced to prison for five years for violating the law.
At the same time George was sentenced, his company also faced a big problem.
It was Charles who had turned the tide. He operated from within, had signed a contract with another influential Lambert family in Sloummont, and sold George’s entire company to them.
