Chapter 120
Chapter 120
Christopher saw Yennefer hesitate “What? Aren’t you going to offer me something to drink?”
Yennefer smiled and said. “Not really.”
Christopher wasn’t disappointed by her rejection since he had already predicted it. The way he saw it was he had plenty of time to make her fall for him.
“You really don’t like me,
huh?”
“Mr. Hayes, that night was just an accident. It’s best for us to forget about it. I’m okay with being single, and I have no plans to change that. Besides, it’s already past midnight, so please forgive me for not inviting you for a drink.”
Her rejection was so obvious that it would be hard for Christopher not to understand it.
Yennefer did say that they could start as friends to buy herself some time, but she had never expected Christopher to really see her as a friend.
“I understand. We are just friends, right?”
Yennefer nodded. “Yeah, and as friends, we need to keep our boundaries. It would be inappropriate for a single woman like me and a single man like you to be seen together at this late hour. I really don’t like to be the topic of everyone’s gossip.”
To Yennefer, nothing was more important than her own reputation.
Christopher’s expression softened. “You’re right. It’s really late.”
“Well, thank you for today. Bye,” said Yennefer before going up her building.
Christopher watched her leave until he couldn’t see her anymore. Then, he turned around and got into the car.
When Christopher got home, he took a shower and lay down on his bed with his hands behind his head. His eyes remained open as he thought back to all the moments he had shared with Yennefer.
Although she had been mindful of keeping her distance from him, Christopher could still smell that unique womanly scent
of hers.
Christopher found the scent very pleasing. It was the kind of faint fragrance that would put people at ease.
It had been five years since he thought about a woman the way he was thinking about Yennefer.
He turned his head to stare out the window. The stars shining from the night sky looked as if they were winking at him.
“Don’t worry, Amelia. I trust that Yennefer will be a good mother to Yvette. She’ll definitely take good care of her in your place, Christopher murmured to himself.
Then, he smiled and closed his eyes.
It didn’t take him long to fall asleep, given the busy day he had.
However, the next morning, Christopher woke up at the same time as usual seven o’clock.
After washing up, he pushed open the door to Yvette’s room.
She was still sleeping.
As Christopher got closer to her, he noticed that Yvette’s face was very red, and she didn’t seem to look well.
“Yvette, are you okay?”
Christopher reached out his hand to touch Yvette’s forehead and immediately pulled it back,
She was burning up!
It didn’t take Christopher much to figure out what was wrong with Yvette.
Without a word, he lifted Yvette out of her bed and rushed her over to the hospital.
Christopher felt extremely heartbroken when he saw how pale Yvette was.
“Mommy… Mommy… whimpered Yvette pitifully.
Christopher held Yvette’s hand tightly and said, “Yvette, I’m here. Hold on we’ll reach the hospital soon.”
Even her hands were hot; it was as if they could burn him.
“Mommy, Yvette misses you so much… Mommy… Don’t leave me.”
Yvette was slipping in and out of consciousness, so she was not aware of what Christopher had said at all.
Christopher’s heart ached even more when he heard Yvette’s words.
Chapter 120
Over the years, Yvette had yearned for a mother’s love, and he had simply failed to give her that.
Amelia’s death scarred him, and he had been unwilling to ever step out from the pain.
The idea of remarrying only popped up in Christopher’s mind because Yvette really liked Josephine. That was also the reason why he felt indifferent toward her rejection.
But it was only after meeting Yennefer that Christopher realized that that wasn’t because he wasn’t unable to let go of the pain. It was just that he hadn’t met someone who could make his heart come alive again.
Therefore, he was determined to make Yennefer his wife, no matter what.
He kissed Yvette lightly on the forehead and said gently, “Don’t worry, Yvette. I will definitely find a mommy who will love you to make up for all the time you had to live without a mother’s love.”
The car sped all the way to the hospital, and Yvette was immediately examined by the doctor.
Fortunately, the examination results came out very quickly. Yvette’s fever was due to her flu brought on by the changes in weather. Christopher was told she would be fine after two days of IV drips.
Christopher was finally able to relax after hearing the doctor’s words.
He stayed by Yvette’s bedside all the while that he forgot about the contract in progress.
At nine o’clock, the phone in his pocket rang.
Christopher took it out and discovered that the call was from Yennefer.
He was stunned.
It only then occurred to him that there was still a contract to be signed.
“Yennefer,” he answered in a hoarse voice.
“Mr. Hayes, when will you be at the company? Mr. Arnold from Hestrya plans to fly at ten o’clock, and you still need to sign a contract, questioned Yennefer.
“Please help me sign in,” replied Christopher.
Yennefer didn’t know what to say.
She was not an employee of his company, nor was she anyone significant to him, so how could she help him sign the
contract?
She immediately refused. “Mr. Hayes, I can’t help you. I’m the third party in this matter. I’m not one of the main parties in the contract.”
Christopher was stunned to hear that. He realized that he was spouting nonsense. It was probably because he wasn’t thinking straight from all his worry about Yvette. He mentally kicked himself for saying something so foolish.
Then, Christopher said, “Yennefer, it’s only nine o’clock right now. There should be enough time for you to bring the contract to the hospital so that I can sign it.”
“What happened? Why did you suddenly go to the hospital?” Yennefer couldn’t help but ask when she heard Christopher say that he was in the hospital.
At that time, Christopher wasn’t in the mood to joke with her, so he said, “Yvette has a fever. I’m taking care of her in the hospital.”
“What? How did Yvette get the fever?” Yennefer asked with concern.
“The doctor said that it was caused by the changes in weather and the flu. She’s hooked up to an IV drip right now and will recover in two days time,” replied Christopher.
Yennefer relayed to Mr. Arnold that Yvette was sick and that Christopher was taking care of her in the hospital in the hopes that he would give them more time to sign the contract.
Mr. Arnold from Hestrya agreed without hesitation when he realized that Yvette was just a child.
He called Hestrya’s headquarters to explain the situation and decided to postpone his flight to the next day.
After all, it was a rare opportunity to work with Hayes Group, so it was only given that they wouldn’t pass it up for a matter
as small as that.
It was not a big deal to wait another day.
After Yennefer had sent Mr. Arnold back to the hotel, she took a taxi to the hospital.
Yvette was still hooked up to the IV drip when Yennefer went to visit her. Her face was still burning red, and her lips were pale and chapped.
Yennefer felt a pang in her heart upon seeing Yvette like that.
Chapter 120
She walked over to her and, in a mock whisper, said. “Yvette, I’m here to see you. You must get better soon.”
Yvette slowly opened her eyes when she heard Yennefer’s voice.
The next second, she burst into tears and fell into Yennefer’s embrace. “Mommy, I miss you so much, she cried sadly.
Yennefer’s heart tightened.
She took a deep breath and gently stroked Yvette’s hair while cooing gently. “I miss you, too. You’ve always been a brave girl. and I’m sure you’ll soon get better.”
