Down End Road

Chapter 16

Alexander Griffin POV

----------------------

Myra had a death wish. That was the only plausible reason for this situation. She had a maniac death wish, and I had told her as much. I had whisper-ranted it all the way to my room, before making her sit astride the chair in the corner so that I could fix up her back without alerting anyone.

She had remained silent, almost blank, the entire way up here. I practically heard the cogs turn in her head, as she was deep in thought about something. After one last reprimand I began to rummage through my drawers for the green healing goop we called, Medela.

Medela was a green fungi type goop that was found in the Hamilton portal. We found out it had healing properties after a guy cut his hand but was instantly healed when he got some of the goo on it. He called it Medela because in Latin it means healing and cure.

Myra turned her head to the side and winced when the skin on her back tensed a little. I felt worried and slightly sympathetic. The claws of Whiztails were extremely sharp and had a type of acid on them which burned like crazy. It was too bad a cut but it was still deep and I could tell she was in pain. I was just impressed she wasn’t screaming her head off right now.

“What is that stuff, I remember maverick telling me to put it on my chest when my medallion burned me.” She croaked. Her voice was hoarse with pain and her usually tan and rosy cheeks had lost most of their color. I rummaged through the box again and handed her a granola bar. Hopefully the sugar would spike her energy.

“This is Medela, it is a type of fungi that grows in the Hamilton portal. It heals you really quickly. Some guy found out about it when he cut himself and it got contaminated with the stuff. He called it Medela cause in Latin it means-”

“Healing and cure.” She finished. I blinked at her and I saw her cheeks lift up in a smile at my stunned silence. She took a bite of the granola bar and after she swallowed she said, “I’m not a complete idiot you know, I didn’t just get in here by pure luck, although I am pretty sure at least ninety percent of it was just pure luck.” She chuckled.

I laughed a breathy laugh. She was incredibly smart, but then again that was her gift. “I can see that. Quite clearly actually.” I answered. I took a deep breath then applied a bit of the green goop onto a lolli stick and warned her, “this may sting at first but after that it’s going to be fine.” She nodded, I looked at her shirt which was stained with a blotch of blood.

I kept staring at the back of her shirt awkwardly. “Uh... may I.” I stuttered, and tugged her shirt. She laughed again and twisted her head round to look at me with her capturing gaze.

“Uh sure, don’t know why you’re being so squeamish, its not like we’re doing anything wrong other than the obvious, staying out past curfew. Which you’ve probably done more than I have.” She stated.

I shook my head at her bluntness and lifted up the back of her shirt. Three long gashes and two shorter scratches were spread out on her lower back. Her tan was still evident, but pink agitated skin surrounded the scratched area.

I smeared the goop onto the wounds and she sucked in a breath. But she visibly relaxed when the skin began to come together. It would take three to four days for it so completely heal the three longer, deeper wounds but the scratched were already healed, only two red lines remained. The red lines would be faded by the time she woke up tomorrow.

After I wrapped up the gouges and gave Myra more sugary granola bars the colour came back to her cheeks. As she stood up to leave her knees buckled and she gripped her head. I shot over to help her stand up straighter and she visible shuddered when I held her waist. She looked up at me and gave me a grateful smile.

In all the chaos I nearly forgot about her encounter with the wolf. She looked into its eyes with only curiosity, I yelled her name repeatedly and she didn’t even flinch. It was like she was in a haze of some sort.

I planned to ask her about that tomorrow, during training. I released my grip on her waist but my hands shot out again when she stumbled trying to walk to the door on her own.

She laughed humourlessly and I just blinked at her. “And to think I thought I was alone.” She whispered so faintly I could barely make it out.But I did. I smiled softly, my heart leaped when she said that, but I quickly scolded myself and eased my iron grip on her waist.

“Um... you wouldn’t mind... ya know helping me to my room I don’t think I am quite ready to walk yet.” She asked sheepishly. I nodded solemnly and escorted her down the intricate maze of Hallways to the girl’s dormitory.

We passed the blue ballroom and I almost sagged in relief when I saw Ally and Maverick. They were talking animatedly and Ally looked positively livid.

Myra cleared her throat gruffly and they turned to look at us. I stiffened when I saw Mavericks eyebrows rise. Myra was leaning almost all her body weight on me, which for a normal teenager wouldn’t exactly be light.

It was probably from all the muscle she had. Her muscles were toned and hard beneath my hands when I gripped her waist and arms. She was most likely some sort of sports player at her school or something.

“Myra, oh-my-gosh-thank-goodness-I-thought-you-were-dead-or-something-where-have-you-been-why-are-you-with-alex-oh-my-gosh-your-hurt-girl-what-happedened-and-” She rambled. Myra held up her hand effectively silencing the girl and smiled.

“Well, I’m not dead. I was walking back but got lost and I was attacked by a Whiztail, nothing serious. I’m with Alex because he found me and fixed me up but I’m a little weak here so he’s just helping me to my room.” She answered.

I was amazed she understood all that incoherent babble. I guessed it was a girl thing or whatever. I looked over to Maverick and saw his infuriating smirk still plastered on his face.

“Ally could you take Myra from here, I got to get back to the dorms before they do their usual headcount.” I asked. Mavericks smirk only grew bigger as I delicately handed Myra over to Ally.

Myra looked more stable now, but still winced when Ally placed too much pressure on her lower back. She immediately recoiled her hand and profusely apologised but Myra just shrugged it off.

“Right well let’s go English, we got to head back, like you said.” He ushered me down the hallway in the opposite direction of Myra. Maverick’s smirk grew still, and it annoyed me to no end. “Whipped.” He said, then ran like a bat out of hell when I began to chase him. His laughter echoed in the halls all the way to our dorms. Some boys had risen out of bed to see what the commotion was all about. However, Maverick just kept laughing and laughing and running. Oh he was so gonna get it in PE tomorrow.
