Chapter |3|
As soon as we enter the camp I’m speechless. I have never seen this many wolves in one place. Once the taxi dropped us off we checked in at the front gate got our room key and schedules and came upon a large open field.
Inside there are wolves everywhere in human and wolf form. To my left, I can see a giant obstacle course and other training equipment. Farther straight in front of us is a large boxing ring where two wolves are sparring.
To the right I can see lots of cabins and in the middle is one large building that reminds me of the pack house back home but way more fancier.
I'm so busy staring at my surroundings that I barely notice the guys walk past us and smile checking us out.
“Hey boys!” Bea waves and I grab her arm pulling her close to me as she laughs.
“Bea what the heck! Trying to find a guy already!” I laugh and Bea twirls a piece of her blonde hair around.
“I’ll be a good girl I promise I just like to look,” Bea replies. Kayla rolls her eyes and I smack Bea’s arm. She just continues to laugh.
I drag both of my heavy bags down the long dirt path to the cabin. Kayla only had one small bag and Bea brought four bags.
I look over at Kayla and see her struggling with her bags. “Do you need help? Maybe I can carry one?” I ask even though my arms are already tired.
My friends know I'm not as strong as other wolves. I have to train twice as hard. I also can't talk to my wolf Raven unless I'm in wolf form. It's strange for a werewolf but like I said before I'm unique.
“Ugh, I’ll help Barbie.” Kayla grunts and grabs two of Bea’s bags.
After a ten-minute walk, we reach our cabin and I’m happy I can set my bags down. As soon as we enter the cabin I trip over the rug and land on my stomach. “Ugh really, legs work right,” I growl and stand back up. I'm so clumsy I hate it.
Bea and Kayla walk around me and we all study the room. The room is decent but I thought it would be nicer. It has a small brown couch and an older flat-screen TV on the wall. A dead sunflower in a cracked white vase sits on the coffee table between them. To our left is a small circle wooden dining table with four chairs. I look towards the hall and see three doors.
“I call dibs on the largest room!” Bea screams and drops her bags and runs down the hall.
“No fair I wasn’t ready!” I yell and chase after her.
Bea runs and opens up the door on the left revealing a large room. Obviously the biggest one too. I roll my eyes at how lucky she is. I open the door in front of me and see a medium-sized room. Inside is a simple grey queen-sized bed with a brown nightstand beside it and a small closet to the left.
“Umm, girls we have a problem.” Kayla turns to face me.
“What is it?” I walk over to Kayla and look into the room and I see the problem.
The problem is it's not a bedroom it’s a bathroom. Somehow we got a two-bedroom instead of a three. Bea walks up behind me and peaks over my shoulder to look. Bea is taller than me by two feet. I'm 5'6 which is short. Most werewolves are over six feet tall.
“Oh no, should we request another room?” Bea asks looking at Kayla.
“It’s fine, I can crash on the couch if I’m lucky you two will meet your mates and can shack up with them.” Kayla laughs and pats my back.
“Are you sure? If you want we can share my bed.” I turn to Kayla with a bright smile on my face.
“It’s okay Avery I have slept on worse plus you are terrible to sleep with. You toss and turn so much it’s uncomfortable.”
“It’s true, still love you though.” Bea nods at me smiling.
“Do I really sleep that bad?” I ask, my smile turning into a frown. I know sometimes me and my wolf are restless to sleep but I always hoped no one ever noticed.
“It’s like an earthquake.” Kayla teases and walks away.
We all go over to our bags and I take mine into my room and start unpacking. I offered to share space with Kayla but she said she only brought one bag and didn’t plan on unpacking it.
After unpacking Bea thought we should walk around and get familiar with the place and I agree. I've been feeling anxious since we arrived. I’m not sure if it’s being in a new place or all the different wolves around. Hopefully, a walk will help.
Once outside we pass many other cabins that look like ours. I spot wolves all around smiling because they found their mate already and some crying because they found their mate and weren’t happy. Bea and Kayla are talking to each other but I don’t pay attention.
The thought of meeting my mate here now makes me nervous. Maybe he won’t like me or maybe he'll reject me. Unlike Bea, I didn’t date. My parent's strict rules made it hard to go out so instead I kept my focus on school.
The only boy I was ever close to was my childhood friend Kai and we were inseparable. We hung out every day at the pack house or meeting at the park. He was such a gentleman even though we were young. Opening doors for me, picking me flowers, and always making sure I ate first before he even took a bite of his food.
I remember being heartbroken after we moved but I wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was from missing my best friend or leaving behind the only home I knew. I was surprised we didn’t keep in touch after I moved. But I guess friends drift apart sometimes.
Before we can walk around any longer an announcement is made over a loud intercom. “All wolves in group A please go to the football field.” The voice repeats over and over.
“We’re in group A let’s go.” Bea squeals excitedly and grabs me and Kayla's arms dragging us towards the football field.
The closer we get to the football field the more anxious I get. We make it to the field but the crowd is so large we're far in the back with at least three rows of wolves in front of us. An older wolf stands up on a wooden box and speaks into a megaphone. Not sure why we all have super hearing.
“Welcome everyone, I’m Joseph and I’m happy to see so many new faces this year. Now this camp isn’t just for finding your mate but also to make lasting friendships and connections. The wolf world works better when we all get along.”
Some of the wolves start to laugh and make jokes but Joe continues.
“By now you should all be checked in and ready for the first event. The first game is dodgeball. We will split you into four teams. May the moon goddess bless you all with luck.” Joe smiles and an older she-wolf comes up to stand on the box next.
The she-wolf starts rambling off names and whether to go to the left or right side. Luckily Bea and Kayla are on my team.
When the game finally starts I hide in the back. Most of the females are hiding except Kayla who loves sports. Kayla and about ten other wolves are running and throwing balls at the other team.
I look over at Bea who is texting on her phone. “Really B this isn’t the time, pay attention.” I scold her.
“Sorry, I saw the cutest dress I had to order it,” Bea says keeping her focus on her phone like balls aren’t flying around everywhere.
“Let’s move around maybe no one will notice us,” I tell her but she isn’t paying attention. A ball flies by us and hits Bea in the chest.
“What the heck jerks!” Bea yells and runs off the field smiling because she doesn't want to play anyway.
I keep playing and soon my team is down to five people besides me. There is Kayla, another girl with purple hair, and three male wolves.
I throw a ball at a wolf on the other team but miss. I growl in annoyance when a wolf on my team walks up beside me. I sniff the air thinking it smells familiar but shake my head at the crazy thought, Whoever it is I don't know them. Nobody from Stars Hollow Pack is here.
The wolf who has shoulder-length dark hair and brown eyes smirks at me. He has broad shoulders and from his dominant aura, I can tell he's an Alpha.
“Nice throw but you should angle your arm back more. Maybe it’ll help,” he says and I roll my eyes at him without glancing at him.
“Thanks but dodgeball isn’t my sport anyway.”
He chuckles and puts out a hand for me to shake. “I’m Alpha Scott of The Red Diamond Pack. What’s your name beautiful?”
I'm shocked by his confidence. Is he flirting with me during a game? I can already smell three different female scents on him. Why is he talking to me?
From the corner of my eyes, I can see him licking his lips and looking my body up, and down. I ignore him and focus on the game instead.
A ball flies our way and I move to dodge it but Scott catches it and throws it back hitting another wolf taking them out of the game.
“You know you could thank me. I just kept you from getting out. You should at least tell me your name?”
I scoff. Normally I’m a nice person but something about this guy rubs me the wrong way. But he's an Alpha and they hate being disrespected, especially by a lower rank wolf. I fake a smile and put out my hand for him to shake.
“I’m Avery, Stars Hollow Pack,” I answer.
A big smile creeps up on Scott’s face. He grabs my hand and pulls it to his mouth kissing it. I yank my hand away fast. Scott looks annoyed and I feel a ball hit me in my side.
“Out!” I hear the announcer yell and I start to walk away. I have my back turned to Scott but I turn around and give him one more look.
“See you soon Avery.” He winks at me and I get chills down my spine. My wolf Raven feels uneasy and so do I.
After dodgeball, we go eat lunch then head back to our cabin and we take turns showering and getting ready for tonight. Bea met some nice girls while she was on the sidelines. They told her about a bonfire tonight and we decided to go.
Kayla is reluctant to go but after being promised free beer she changed her mind. Bea is the most excited to go. She hopes to find her mate and I just hope not to run into Alpha Scott again.
I put on a short black dress with my black wedged boots. Bea wears a turquoise crop top with a matching skirt. Kayla hates dresses and decided to wear black skinny jeans and a red tank top.
Bea does my hair and makeup up then after arguing with Kayla she finally convinced her to wear makeup and style her hair. Before we walk out the door I take a deep breath.
“Mate if you're out there here I come.”
