Chapter 16
Krista grabbed her mates’ hands and pulled – dragged – them out of the room. Her mama was pissed. She didn’t get mad often, but when she did everyone else had better move out of her way. Krista didn’t think they needed to be in there to witness the ass kicking that was soon to take place.
“You self-righteous son of a bitch. Just what in the fuck is your problem? How dare you judge me? None of us are good people. We try as hard as we can not to kill humans, but we torture and murder each other without prejudice. We don’t get to pick our soul mates. We just make do with the hand we are dealt. You don’t want me? So the fuck what. You’re not the first and you for damn sure won’t be the last.”
Jackson just stood there with his mouth gaped open like an idiot. To think, this was one of the dumbasses’ whom fate decided was meant for her. Scratch that, Taylor hadn’t been an ass to her. Yet. Hopefully, he wasn’t an asshole like their other mate.
Taylor gave Jackson the dirtiest look he could muster, then punched him in the face. It hurt like hell, but he deserved it. Jackson’s shocked look still did nothing to ease Taylor’s temper. He was madder than hell. He didn’t like to fight with his mate, but the man had really stuck his foot in his mouth on this one. He turned to apologize to Jenny.
“Jennifer, I’m truly sorry for Captain Asshole here. I don’t know why his head is in his ass, but I assure you he will be taking it out real quick. You are our mate. Everything isn’t going to be perfect, and it’s for damn sure not going to be easy. We’ve been warned away from Mystics our entire life, but you have done nothing to deserve the treatment you are getting. We all need to—”
Taylor was cut off mid-sentence by Krista’s screams. What in the hell was going on in there? All three of them froze for two seconds before running into the other room to see what was making everyone jumpy. The sight that awaited them was horrible. Sick. Twisted. There was really no way to describe what they were seeing. Taylor felt sick down to his soul. No one should be done in like that, ever.
The breath whooshed out of Jennifer’s chest and a broken sob escaped. Some sort of invisible shield was holding Nathan and Taser back while Krista was suspended in air, spread eagle. There looked to be holes in her hands and feet, like she was being crucified in the air. She was screaming and shaking her head back and forth and calling out for her mother. Jenny was shocked down to her knees. As she sat there, speechless, her uncle’s voice rang out around them.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are, Jennifer, or you will regret it. The wards may keep my body out but they can’t keep my magic out. Such a pretty girl; too bad she is paying for your sins, sweetheart.”
Jenny hated him with every part of her body. Why was he torturing her like this? The brutality done to her daughter helped her find her voice. “Let her go, James. This has nothing to do with her.”
“Oh dear, but you are wrong. She is mine after all. Maybe I want her as well.”
“You can’t have her, you sick bastard,” Nathan cursed at him while Taz just growled and snarled.
“Shut up, cat, before I kill your little wolf pup. Jennifer, you have five seconds to come outside.”
As Jenny felt herself rise and move toward the door, Jackson pulled her to his chest.
“You’re not going out there with that sick fuck,” he yelled.
“Very well,” was James’s answer.
With those words, Krista vanished right before their eyes and they heard her scream from outside. Jenny pushed Jackson and rushed to the window. James had Krista by the throat and an evil smile on his face.
“Jenny, when you’re ready to stop playing games, summon me and we can finish this. Until then she comes with me. It’s time for a bit of father-daughter time. Oh and by the way, I hope you liked the little gift I left for you. I hope you at least gave them a great last memory before I ripped them apart.”
With those parting words, they were both gone. Jenny heard a series of screams. As blackness consumed her, she realized the screams were coming from herself. If anything happened to Krista, she would never forgive herself. She knew firsthand just how cruel her family tree could be.
