Chapter 26
Yvonne sneered, glancing at Sherry and then at the classmates who were looking down on her. Finally, her gaze landed on Daisy, who stood there completely indifferent. ‘It’s all your fault, Daisy! You’ve made me look ridiculous, Yvonne thought angrily.
In the next moment, Yvonne pulled out a necklace from her pocket. “Who even cares about your garbage. Daisy?” she shouted. With a swift motion, she yanked the necklace apart, breaking it clean in two. Then she tossed the pieces at Daisy’s feet like trash. “There! That’s your s***id necklace back!”
Holding her head high in triumph, Yvonne felt a rush of satisfaction. But the next second, Daisy did something completely shocking. Before anyone could react, she rushed over to Yvonne grabbing her right hand with a fierce grip. There was a loud c**k of bone breaking, and suddenly, Yvonne was on the floor, rolling in pain,
No one expected Daisy to know how to fight. Yvonne had destroyed something precious to her, and Daisy finally let loose. When Daisy was asking questions and showing evidence, she had been holding back, waiting for the right moment.
The sudden shift in Daisy’s demeanor changed how most people viewed her. If it had been something important to them. they’d probably have lost their cool and lashed out at Yvonne already. But Daisy had remained calm throughout this ordeal. which was something most people couldn’t pull off.
Sherry was the first to react. “Daisy! How could you hit Yvonne like that?” she yelled, her voice sharp with anger. Chaos erupted in the classroom as students gasped and began arguing.
Through all the noise, Daisy’s expression remained blank. Like a robot, she bent down and picked up the broken necklace, squeezing the pieces tightly in her hand. Her breath came in heavy gasps. Finally, she couldn’t hold it anymore and bolted out of the classroom, leaving the chaos behind.
“Ms. Levine, Daisy just ran out!” a student exclaimed, panic in their voice..
“Forget about Daisy! Get someone to take Yvonne to the nurse!” Sherry shouted back, her voice barely cutting through the chaos in the classroom.
In the meantime, Daisy dashed out of the school building, desperate to escape. The place felt so fake, filled with snobby classmates and insincere teachers. To her, this so-called holy campus was a hundred times worse than a dumpster.
“Daisy! Hey, wait up!” someone called from behind her, but she ignored it, pushing herself to run faster. All she wanted was to be as far away as possible from there.
As she rushed up the stairs, she stumbled on the last step. Just then, a strong hand shot out, grabbing her around the waist and pulling her back. She felt her back hit a hard chest.
“Where are you going?” the voice was low and a bit charming.
Daisy paused for a second, her shoulders shaking as she took a deep breath.
Seeing something wasn’t right, Lance turned her around to face him, his eyes locked on hers. “What happened?”
Tears were threatening to spill, and her fists were clenched tightly, the veins on her hands standing out. Lance had always seen Daisy as resourceful-she never backed down from anything. He wondered what had happened to make her so upset today.
“I just want to leave this place,” she said, her voice shaky.
“Okay,” he replied without hesitation, sensing her distress. He took her hand and swiftly led her to his car, opening the door and gently urging her inside, Throughout it all, Daisy felt like a doll-alive but completely silent.
Lance started the car and drove off, speeding away from the school. The tires screeched as he pushed the pedal down. This was his way of blowing off steam, and even though he wasn’t sure if it would help Daisy, he just kept driving. For now, they were leaving behind the place that made her feel trapped.
The wind howled around them, stinging Daisy’s face like tiny needles. Gradually, it brought her back to her senses, helping her calm down. She glanced down at the necklace pieces in her hands, which had left deep marks on her skin as if they were stuck there.
“Is this why you’re upset?” Lance asked, glancing at the necklace before looking away.
“That was my coming-of-age gift from my grandma,” Daisy replied, her voice steady but laced with sadness.
“Did someone break it?” Lance asked, concern in his eyes. Daisy pressed her lips together, choosing silence.
“Daisy, you can let it out however you want. You don’t have to hold it all in, Lance said gently, feeling a pang in his heart for her.
“What’s there to let out?” Daisy said, biting her lip. She didn’t want to say that her grandma had abandoned her. Today’s outburst was about more than just the necklace; it reminded her of her grandma’s sudden departure. Now, the only gift she had left was ruined, and Daisy felt like she was crumbling inside.
“Don’t think about the bad stuff, Lance added, remembering when Daisy used to be full of energy, like a little fox. It broke his heart to see her so lifeless now.
In the end, neither of them said more. They drove in silence up to the mountain and sat at the top for what felt like hours.
The next day at school, Daisy walked in only to find Yvonne already expelled. At first, her classmates were friendly, but a couple of Yvonne’s friends kept giving her sharp looks.
Stealing wasn’t serious enough to get Yvonne expelled. Little did Daisy know, there were people stirring the pot behind the scenes.
“Daisy, where were you yesterday? I was so worried! I wanted to look for you, but I had no idea where you went,” Laura exclaimed.
Daisy bit her lip and shook her head, signaling she didn’t want to talk about it.
“Don’t you feel happy now? Because of you, Yvonne is gone for good,” Laura said.
Daisy turned to Laura. “What does her leaving have to do with me? She brought this on herself.”
“But Daisy,” Laura pressed, her eyes turning watery, “do you have any idea how sad Yvonne is right now? No school wants her!”
Daisy shrugged unapologetically. “Honestly, that’s not my problem.”
