Curse of the Moon Goddess

Chapter Vampires vs. Werewolves

Sage’s POV

“You could accept me as your mate.”

After sitting in stunned silence for a time, I finally spoke, “Lukas, I can’t accept you.”

“Are you rejecting me?” his voice was pinched with anger.

I hesitated, then replied, “I don’t know.”

“Is it because of Jace?” he asked, surety already etched in his tone.

“What?” I was taken aback for a moment, “No. Jace already has a mate. Besides, he’s treated me more like a big brother than someone he sees romantically.”

Lukas scoffed.

“Then, is it Adam?”

I furrowed my brows, genuinely confused, “Adam?”

Lukas looked me straight in the eyes. “Yes. Adam. Is it him?”

My mouth opened, but words that weren’t my own rang out instead.

“I would hope so. If not before, then definitely now.”

Lukas and I both turned towards the forest, standing so fast we should have become dizzy.

There, emerging from the forest, were two sets of glowing eyes. A gasp escaped my lips as the two figures stepped into the moonlight. I recognized both instantly. One was the vampire from earlier. The second was Adam. He didn’t look exactly like Adam. His skin was now porcelain white and appeared to be made of marble than flesh and muscles. His eyes appeared bloodshot and hungry. It didn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened.

“Adam. What did they do to you?” I breathed out, concern and anger lacing every word.

Adam chuckled before replying, “They didn’t do anything to me. Once they told me you were being hit on by two werewolves, I knew I didn’t stand a chance. I begged them to turn me into a vampire. You seem to have a thing for mythological creatures, so I decided to become one for you. Pretty impressive, wouldn’t you think?”

I could feel my blood boil with anger and guilt the more he spoke. “You really think I’d want you if you were a vampire? This isn’t some kind of teen romance novel! I’m sorry, but I didn’t like you in a romantic way before and I still don’t. I’m sorry you thought you had to change in order to get my attention, but that’s not how I am.”

I knew I was done for as my words reached his ears. His eyes turned a dangerous color of red.

“We’ll see about that,” he threatened.

In one swift movement, he sent Lukas flying against a tree and had me trapped in his grip.

“Now that I have you, I’m not letting go.”

I turned in horror as I heard Lukas’ heart-wrenching howl. The leader vampire, whose name I still didn’t know, had Lukas pinned against the tree. I heard a snap as Lukas’ right arm was snapped in half. I felt the pain as if it was my own and found myself howling at the moon in agony.

Adam’s grip on me tightened. “Don’t you dare try anything stupid.”

I looked him in the eyes and was pleased by the look of shock on his face. I could feel a power coursing through me similar to what I had felt when I fought the rogues a few days earlier. It was like a drug. Addictive and giving me the feeling of being invincible.

“Let go of me,” I demanded. My voice sounded different. It had that same techno sound you could hear in certain singers’ songs.

Adam took a step back, startled by this sudden change. His shock wore off too quickly. I didn’t get the chance to form a plan. He pounced at me. I dodged but couldn’t counter-attack. We stayed in this constant battle of him on offense and I on defense. Pretty soon there was the sound of more wolves growling. I refused to look as not to give Adam an opening, but I knew it had to be Jace, Venessa, and Ian.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw two figures rush to aid Lukas who was still pinned to the tree. I saw another figure rushing in my direction. Adam must have seen it too as he instantly took up a defensive position just as the figure launched itself at him. The two of them rolled on the ground, giving me time to shift into my wolf.

We jumped straight into the fight. I did my best not to harm Adam, but he was making it very difficult. He’d switch from offensive to defensive. But mostly he was just trying to get ahold of me. I finally saw an opening and dove in to grab hold of his neck to pin him down. However, he saw me in the nick of time. He swung his arm at me, sending me flying straight into a tree. My head went fuzzy, my vision blurring. I forced myself to get up, trying to shake away the fog in my head and vision. I was able to see just enough to know Adam was about to kill Jace.

I quickly shifted to my human form to call out.

“No!”

Two voices sounded out the call. One was mine, desperate and pleading. The other angry and possessive.

I saw in horror that the lead vampire had knocked Venessa, Ian, and Lukas unconscious. He was limping a bit as he made his way to Jace; still pinned to the ground by Adam.

“I told you. He’s mine. I get to kill him.”

The lead vampire flung Adam out of the way. I tried shifting. I had to do something. I couldn’t let him kill Jace. I couldn’t.
