Chapter 55
"Did any of you notice something strange about Damien?"
It was early in the morning and the girls were gathered again at the shooting positions, ten yards away from the posts.
"He's been aloof."
Jada added to Allison's observation.
"Perhaps something happened yesterday when he left to catch fish. He's been like that ever since he returned."
Evelyn gave her view of the situation.
"Neither did he return with the fish nor as the same person. I don't know why a part of me is somehow scared."
Mira confessed.
"Here he comes."
Tendzel called their attention as Damien walked out the other safehouse towards them. In his hands were the crossbows and arrows.
"One of us should ask if what the problem is."
Jada suggested.
"Let Claire."
Tendzel called. Claire, more than stunned shot a wild glare at Tendzel.
"Why should---"
Damien got to them.
"We should continue from where we stopped yesterday."
He began to hand the crossbows and arrows to the girls.
"I'm quite glad that some of you are doing good."
He got to the last person. Ayisha.
"If you put in more effort, no doubt, we won't have to practice tomorrow. Tomorrow would be a day of rest instead, in preparation for the celebration." "For how many days would we celebrate?"
Mira called his attention. He walked away from Ayisha.
"I haven't quite thought of that."
He admitted.
"But I should come to a conclusion before the end of today."
He walked to stand in the middle, at a vintage point. He could notice the girls mouthing at Claire. He had no idea what they were up to. Like he cared.
"Unlike yesterday, I wouldn't be schooling you. Instead, I would stand somewhere and keep track of your progress. Somewhere safe. I don't want your arrows sticking out of my head."
All the girls laughed real good. He was so confused that he couldn't help but ask himself,
WAS THAT FUNNY?
"I would count one to ---"
"Why do you all keep giving me those faces?"
Claire bursted out at once. Damien couldn't help but wait for his turn. She looked away from Tendzel to him.
"Why should I care whether or not he is in a good mood? After all, I'll kill at the end of them."
"Claire!"
Jada called. Jada did the call for the rest of the girls who would had done exactly the same.
But like Claire cared.
"So what if he went away and returned sad? Why should I worry about that? He promised to bring food for us, we all starved last night. He didn't even tell us anything! Why should we be the one to ask him first."
She rolled her eyes at him.
"Such stinking ego. So typical of the masculine gender. I just want to shoot his skull open."
"Please Damien, ignore her. She's stupid."
Jada called, pleading with Damien.
"You bitch!"
Allison had lost it and was taking strides in Claire's direction.
"She's right."
Damien called and all the girls bickering took a sudden pause. Allison stopped reluctantly, slowly looking away from Claire to Damien. Her glare tuning to a curious gaze.
"I should had spoken when I got home. I shoulda explained. It was wrong of me to make you starve after your hard works yesterday."
A gentle smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"After all you're all my queens."
"Who gave you the right to --"
Claire choked on her words at Allison's glare. She didn't need to be warned. She knew, Allison would beat her to pulp. In short, she would beat all the girls to pulp.
"But I won't apologize to you."
He had a wild smirk seated in his face.
"Huh?"
The girls chorused.
"You are in no position to demand for apologies. Or should I remind you of all you've --"
"We understand."
Mira cut him short.
"Don't do it again."
He snapped at her. She wasn't the only one who was confused. All the girls were.
"What? What do you mean?"
Mira asked. Of course it's reasonable to clear her confusion and doubts.
"Don't cut me short when I'm not done talking."
He looked away from her with an unamused gaze to the rest,
"And that goes to you all. Never cut me short when I'm talki--"
"Else. What would you do?"
Claire dared him. He took her in his gaze, his jaws stiffened, the corner of his eyes dark.
He strutted towards her, taking wild strides. He could hear the girls muttering in fear, some of them saying,
"What's he going to do?"
"Claire run..."
"Why did she have to cut in..."
Claire retained her position. She glared while she watched him approach her. But deep inside she was quaking and shuddering. "Please forgive her Damien."
Allison begged.
"Please..."
The girls joined her at once.
You would think Damien was deaf. He didn't even break an eye contact with Claire let alone allow himself be distracted.
He got to her and grabbed her hair, fisting her full long hair in his fist as he pushed her face up.
He pushed his face closer to hers and devoured her lips.
"What the fuck!!!"
He could hear one of the girls call, though he had no idea who that was.
He didn't care. He wasn't done yet. He kissed Claire roughly and wildly. She fought to break free but his build and grip on her were just too much for a spoilt brat like her to fight off. He let go of her when he was done. His lips hot and wet.
"What the hell!!"
Claire made to slap him but he grabbed her hand and pulled her into his chest, not hugging him though. He tilted his face closer again as though he would kiss her but looked away.
The girls were stupefied. He could read their faces. A bunch of them had their lips paved in shock. What the hell had they just watched?
"I would do to you what you hate the most. Your nightmare. If you dare interrupt me while I speak."
He was generous enough to lift the fog of confusion. He dropped Claire's hand and walked away from her.
"Oh my God, he's so hot."
Evelyn picked a better side of the scene. She couldn't enjoy the mood for long, the rest of the girls would have her neck.
Majority of the girls were too stunned to speak.
"You can get to work now, I should make up for yesterday's night. Give me a reason to be happy when I return. I'm sure you all know what that means."
He nodded at them and walked away, towards the gate of the fence. Then out of their sight and into the woods.
"You crazy bastard!!!"
He knew who wanted to shit her pants. But he didn't look back let alone give a reply.
- that was so cool -
He hadn't walked for long into the woods when he heard the voice in his head. He knew who that was.
WHY DOES THIS FEEL STRANGE?
He didn't stop walking.
- what? -
ISN'T IT OBVIOUS, DUMMY. YOU COMPLIMENTING ME OF COURSE. IT'S LIKE SOGGY NOODLES THAT HAD ALREADY LOST ITS TASTE.
~ you fool. what was I thinking trying to be nice to you ~
YEA. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
He kept on walking. After a while, he asked.
WAS IT YOU YESTERDAY?
He halted at the foot of a big apple tree. He looked up at the red apple fruits. He gulped hungrily just at the sight of it.
Climbing up the tree was a cakewalk. He had gotten to the top and sat on a lofty branch. He plucked three fruits next to him. He bit hungrily, chewing and munching like one of the Cannibals. "Oh heavens, this is so juicy!!!"
He closed his eyes, chewing and taking in the flavor and good sensation that accompanied the taste of the apple.
"I feel like I want to start living here."
~
- glutton -
The wolf cussed.
I WONDER THE NUMBERS OF WORDS IN A WOLF'S VOCABULARY OR DICTIONARY OR WHATEVER THE FUCK IT'S CALLED.
- clodpole -
Der added.
I'M NOT SURE IF I'VE HEARD THAT WORD BEFORE. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
- didn't you say humans know all -
Damien didn't try to win her. He knew that there was no winning with her.
- you should take some home for your queens ~
Der suggested.
YEA, I SHOULD. THAT'S QUITE THOUGHTFUL. AND I SHOULD PLANT AN APPLE TREE IN THE COMPOUND.
- like the rice you planted grew ~
Damien smirked.
YOU FOOL, WHAT DO YOU KNOW? WHAT WAS I EXPECTING FROM A SASSY WOLF THOUGH? THAT SHE'D KNOW THAT IT TAKES SEVEN MONTHS FOR RICE TO GERMINATE?
- typical of a basic human. he believes he knows all. it a disease that your folks should treat. ~
Damien felt offended. He threw one of the apples at the wolf who was at the base of the apple tree.
- do better -
She dared him after dodging the apple.
REALLY? DON'T BLAME ME FOR CRACKING YOUR LITTLE WOLFIE SKULL.
- at least try -
BASTARD!!!
Damien started hurling as many apples as possible at the wolf, but the more he tried, the more he wasted. The wolf was so smooth, running the same circle yet avoiding the throws.
"You crazy bitch!!!"
Damien hated to give up. He jumped down from the apple tree and began to pursue her.
