CJ Fisher Finds Love

Chapter 2

It was a long day, he had more patients than normal. Biding Maureen goodbye he headed straight home. All he wanted was to soak in a tub, have a bite to eat and take a beer out onto his front porch. An early night was in the cards for him.

He was on his porch when his father rode up on his horse. “Hey Dad, want a beer?”

“You bet son,” Calvin Sr. said as he sat down.

Coming back out with two beers in hand gave one to his father. “What brings you over this late? Did Mom kick you out?”

“Your mother has company over so I thought I’d come and see what you’re up to. You look tired tonight. Anything bothering you?”

“No, just been a busy day. Sorry, I haven’t been over in a while. Tell Mom I’ll come over this weekend for one of her home-cooked meals.” He took a swallow of his beer. “I see Ward has hired himself a new waitress.”

“Yes, a Samantha Cain, Calvin replied.”

“Cain. Is she related to Mr. and Mrs. Cain?”

“She’s their granddaughter. I heard they left her the farm after they passed away and she decided to move here. Lord knows why she would want to move in there, it’s a little run down and needs a lot of work. Have you met her, son?”

“In a sense. I dropped by the diner on my way to the office to pick up a coffee.”

“What is she like?”

“Beautiful, dark hair, brown eyes, and a great body. But she is not very friendly and when I asked her name she wouldn’t answer. I got the feeling she didn’t like me.”

Calvin Sr. laughed. “Are you telling me your charm and smile couldn’t win her over?”

“Not yet, but she’ll come around.”

“Maybe this time will be different CJ, she just might not be into you. I would let this one go if I were you. I’d hate to see you get hurt.”

“You know me, Dad.”

“That I do son. I better get back now. Your mother bought this sexy little black nightgown that I’m itching to rip off her.”

CJ shook his head, hearing about his parent’s sex life was something he didn’t want to know about. “God Dad, don’t you two ever stop?”

Calvin Sr. stood, getting ready to leave. “When you find the right one it doesn’t matter how old you get, the passion is always there. I hope someday you find what your mother and I have. See you son.”

CJ waited till his father was out of sight before going inside and getting ready for bed. The next day was slow at work and he was thinking of leaving early when his nurse walked in with a file in her hand. His eyes lit up when he saw who was following right behind her.

“Doctor Fisher, I have a Miss. Cain with a serious cut on her left hand,” Maureen said, handing him Samantha’s folder.

“Thank you, I’ll take it from here.”

“You’re the doctor?” Samantha asked.

“That’s right, now sit down and let me have a look at that cut.” Removing the cloth from her hand he proceeded to clean it. “It’s deep, will need a couple of stitches. How did this happen?”

“I was washing a glass and it broke,” she said nervously. With the back of her hand in his palm, she felt a tingle shoot through her. His hand was soft yet firm. Being up this close she couldn’t help but notice how handsome he was, and he smelled so good. “So you are the famous Doctor Fisher I’ve been hearing about.”

He looked up at her and smiled as he got ready to stitch up the cut. “All good I hope.”

“Not really,” she answered. She cringed when she saw him putting the stitches in and turned her head.

“There, all done. Now that didn’t hurt did it?”

“Just a little.”

He applied a bandage, his hand lingered on hers for a brief moment. “Keep the cut clean and I’ll write you a prescription for some lotion you can apply to it.”

Pulling her hand from his she stood up. “Thank you, I appreciate you seeing me with no appointment.”

He stood. “Anytime.” Sitting back down when she left he thought about how delicate and soft her hand was. There was something about her he liked, it wasn’t just her beauty. She was strong and independent, and under that scowl on her face he sensed was a warm and loving woman. He wondered what her story was. Why would she choose to come here and live in her grandparent's home?

A wide grin appeared on his face when he noticed the prescription that he wrote out for her laying on his desk. She had forgotten to take it with her. Well, he would just have to pick it up and take it to her home. It was the perfect excuse to see her again.

After stopping by the drugstore he went home to shower and change into jeans and boots and to grab his cowboy hat before heading out to her place. He was anxious to see her again and kind of felt like a teenager on his way to his first date. But he wasn’t a teenager, nor was this a date.

Reaching her farm he jumped down from his horse, he knew she must be home since there was a car parked in the driveway. Walking up the steps he knocked once, waited and knocked two more times but got no answer. Moving to the window he peeked inside but didn’t see anyone moving around. Then he heard a gun being cocked behind him.

“Put your hands up and move around slowly.”

He raised his hands up in the air. “Don’t shoot, it’s me CJ,” he said as he turned to face her. There she stood, wearing jeans, a shirt, her hair was done up in a ponytail and was pointing a rifle at him.

Seeing who it was she lowered her gun and let out a disgruntled groan. “It’s dangerous sneaking around someone’s property. What the hell are you doing here?”

Lowering his arms he relaxed his body. “First of all, I wasn’t sneaking around.”

“Then why were you looking in my window? That’s really creepy.” She hadn’t recognized him from the back. He looked different in his cowboy clothes. His muscles were defined by the snug fit of his shirt. The tight jeans he wore left nothing to one’s imagination.

“You left your prescription in my office so I had it filled and was just bringing it to you. As for looking in your window, I was trying to see if anyone was home since no one answered my knock.”

He took the tube of lotion from his pocket and handed it to her. “Apply it two to three times a day for about a week.”

“Thank you,” she said, taking it from him. “Come inside and I’ll get you the money for it.”

“Don’t bother, it’s on me.”

She glared angrily at him. “I don’t need your charity.”

He followed her inside. “I could use a cold drink, it’s hot out.”

She stopped to look at him, he did look hot and was sweating. “Come into the kitchen, all I have is water or juice.”

“Water would be great.”

Pouring him a cold glass of water handed it to him and then went and got her purse. Taking out some money and handed it to him.

“So you live here all alone?”

“Not that it’s any of your business but yes.”

“I was just heading into town for something to eat, care to join me?”

“No thank you. Now if you don’t mind I have a lot of work to do.”

“Like what?” When he got no answer he kept talking. “I know the place needs a lot of work. If you plan on getting a horse the fence will need repairing and the barn needs a new roof. I and some of the others will be happy to give a helping hand.”

“I told you I don’t want or need your charity, or anyone else’s. I can do the work myself,” she snapped.

’It’s not charity. Around these parts, it’s the neighbourly thing to do. We always help one another when needed.”

“No thank you. Please leave now.”

He placed the empty glass on the counter and stood in front of her. “If you change your mind just say the word. I can have half a dozen men here and the work will be done in no time. We both know you can’t put a roof on the barn by yourself.” Walking away and once outside he jumped on his horse and left.

She felt a little uneasy around CJ, had from the first moment she laid eyes on him that day in the diner. There was no denying to herself that she found him attractive, his smile and those dimples almost had her melting. But she knew his type, charming all the women just to get them into bed. Thinking he was God’s gift to women. It would be so easy to fall for him but she was not about to get involved with the likes of him. She would keep her distance from him, and if he came into the diner again she would have one of the other girls wait on him.

The next day at work Crissy, the other waitress who worked with her asked how her hand was doing.

“A bit sore but I will live,” she said, chuckling.

“So what did you think of Doctor Fisher?”

“I have no thoughts on the man.”

“Isn’t he just the yummiest man you ever met?”

“He’s OK I guess.”

“Hell Samantha, he’s more than OK, he’s gorgeous. I hear he’s great in the sack. Oh, what I wouldn’t do to have one night with him.”

“Well, why don’t you then?”

“Don’t think I haven’t tried, but I guess he thinks I’m too young for him. Besides, I’d have to stand in line.”

“You are only eighteen Crissy. Find yourself a nice guy, one that won’t cheat on you. Doctor Fisher I gather is a player, men like him cheat.”

Crissy perked up. “Speak of the devil and he shall appear.”

Sam looked over towards the door and saw CJ enter and went to her section. “Shit,” she cursed under her breath. “Will you take his order?”

“No way, you know how Ward feels about us switching sections. Go on, he won’t bite. Well, not that I know of,” Crissy said, giving her a light shove.

“Afternoon Samantha,” CJ said as he took the menu from her.

“Afternoon and I prefer to be called Sam.”

“OK Sam, I’ll have the special and how is your hand?”

“It’s throbbing.”

He smiled. “That means it’s healing. I was wondering if you’d like to go for a drink later tonight or maybe dinner?”

“No thanks. I’ll be back with your meal,” she said, turned and left his table. That was the second time he asked her out and she wondered if he’d ever stop. Surely he must have gotten the hint by now that she wasn’t interested.

When he was done with his meal he went over to pay his bill, handing her the money and waited while she rang it into the cash register. “If you don’t want to go to dinner then how about we go dancing?”

She rolled her eyes. “Look, I’m never going out with you, not now, not ever. I’m not interested and I’m sure there are plenty of women willing to go out with you.”

“Oh, there are. I just thought with you being new around here it might be nice to take you somewhere nice. Who knows, you just might have fun.”

“Ugh, give up already,” she said and walked away.

“I’ll go out with you Doctor Fisher,” Crissy said, flashing him a smile.

Smiling back he chuckled. “Maybe in a few years doll.” Winking at her he walked out.

“Are you crazy Sam? The hottest man in this town asked you out and you turn him down. Why not go?′

“Oh, not you too Crissy.” She was starting to get annoyed, why couldn’t everyone leave her alone? “We better get back to work, Ward is giving us dirty looks.”
