Boyfriend’

Chapter 9

Chapter 09

The wedding was grand. I received an invitation, but I didn’t go, nor did I send a gift. Many people in our mutual friends‘ group chat urged me to be tolerant, saying it was just a wedding.

Joan even came to persuade me in person, saying that whatever Alfred was buying for Marleen would eventually be mine, so I

shouldn’t mind.

“Aunt Joan, Alfred and I have broken up, and the $100,000 have been returned,” I said seriously to Joan. I knew she was there to mediate, but there was no chance of reconciliation between Alfred and me.

After the wedding, Alfred took Marleen on a

honeymoon. Marleen claimed that she didn’t

have much time left and wanted to travel and see beautiful landscapes while she still could.

Three months later, Marleen’s condition worsened, and she had to be hospitalized. Faced with the exorbitant medical bills, Alfred was struggling.

I heard from his friends and through our mutual friends‘ group chat that Alfred had unloaded his shares to fund the wedding and had taken out bank loans.

After selling his stocks, he traveled with Marleen while accumulating debt. Now, his credit cards were overdue, and he was constantly harassed by the bank for repayment. Marleen’s hospitalization has added a hefty medical bill to

his troubles.

To make ends meet, he was running around frantically.

It’s rumored that he was tricked when he bought that diamond ring–it seemed to have the right purity, but it was actually a counterfeit. The pawnshop only offered $50,000. Even after selling all the jewelry, it wasn’t enough to cover his bank loans.

During this time, Alfred was accompanying Marleen on their aimless travels, dining at Michelin–starred restaurants and charging on six different bank credit cards, racking up over two hundred thousand in debt, which he now desperately needed to repay. With no money, he unbelievably set his sights on me again.

That afternoon, he even brought his parents to my house, saying they were there to apologize and discuss marriage.

Knowing his true intentions, I specifically invited my lawyer, Mr. Wood, to join us. Mr. Wood is an exceptionally sharp and assertive attorney.

When Joan suggested that Alfred and I should make up, Mr. Wood coldly asked, “Mrs. Walker, do you want your son to be charged with the crime of abandonment?”

Joan replied, “What crime of abandonment? It’s just a wedding, no legal marriage certificate.”

Mr. Wood then explained to her what “de

facto marriage” means. I still had the wedding invitation Alfred had sent me as evidence, which is enough to prove that marrying Alfred would be illegal.

After Mr. Wood finished speaking, everyone in the Walker Family was stunned, including Alfred.

Leaning back in my chair, I sneered, “Alfred, regardless of your reasons for marrying Marleen, in everyone’s eyes, you’re now a married man. Do you think it’s appropriate to come to me now

That’s the first thing. Second, even if Marleen is dead, you’re still a widower. If you want to marry again, you’ll be seen as someone who has been married twice, and the woman will

naturally be picky, wondering if you bring bad luck to your wives or have some other hidden

issues.

Third, with your overdue credit cards and bank

loans, if you can’t repay them, you’ll be a credit defaulter.

Marrying someone like you means either using money to cover the huge debts you and your ex–wife racked up with your extravagant lifestyle or living a life of constant anxiety, with all sorts

of freedoms restricted.”

Mr. Wood interjected with a smile, “Any woman would consider whether their future children would start life at a disadvantage, given your status as a debtor.”

Alfred and Joan, both sensitive about their

pride, turned bright red, like raw liver.

“Who the hell is a debtor?” Alfred stood up in anger, shouting at me and Mr. Wood.

I glanced at Mr. Wood.

Mr. Wood smiled and said, “Mr. Walker, my client has asked you to return everything she gave you during your relationship, and you have yet to comply. Given the substantial amount involved, I have prepared the necessary documents to initiate legal proceedings.”

At this, Alfred seemed utterly stunned. After the Walker Family left, I finally breathed a sigh of

relief.
