Chapter 88
Chapter 88
Damien was just about to relieve Ana of his bra that afternoon when he heard a honk. He looked at the clock and realized it was far later than they had realized.
Ana leaned over to look out the kitchen window. “Oh shit!” she yelped, pushing Damien away and jumping off the counter, scrambling to collect her clothes that Damien had tossed all over the kitchen floor.
The car was pulling into the driveway. Damien was pretty sure the honk was for their benefit. No doubt this was the first place Alan would come looking for them.
Ana groaned.
Once they were both dressed, they slipped on shoes and made their way outside. Dianne had Alan’s door opened and had just let him loose when he spotted Damien.
“Daddy!” he screamed and jumped into his father’s arms.
Damien grunted, catching Alan’s knee a little too close to his prized family jewels. He heard Ana giggle behind him.
“Be careful with your daddy, baby.”
“Sorry, daddy!” Alan smiled sheepishly. “I missed you.”
Damien kissed his head and handed him to Alan.
“Hi, Mommy,” he mumbled, burying his face into Ana’s shoulder and squeezing it as tightly as he could.
“Did you have a good time?”
“Uhhuh.”
“Are you going to tell me about it?”
Ana nodded and then furrowed his brow. “I’m hungry.”
“Let’s go get some food in you,” Dianne smiled. Ana set Alan down and Dianne took his hand, leading him inside.
Damien
put his arm around her shoulder as they followed them in. “If he’s not more careful with his knee, he’s not going to have any brothers or sisters,” Damien joked, but then he stopped suddenly when he realized what he had just said.
Ana didn’t say anything. He took the chance to glance at her and saw her staring straight ahead, her lips twitching at the
corners.
“That just came out,” he tried to explain.
“It’s okay, Damien.” she said quietly.
Damien would have given anything to know what she was thinking. He could have asked… he should have… but he didn’t. He kept his arm draped over her shoulder and escorted her inside.
Did he want more kids? He hadn’t ever thought about it. He didn’t even know why he said it. He didn’t have siblings growing up but he knew others who it. It seemed fair that Alan would have siblings, too.
He thought about Ana. He thought about making love to her and creating another baby. He would see the joy in her eyes when she told him and the emotion of watching her belly grow with his child. He could imagine Alan’s excitement as they prepared him to be a responsible and loving big brother.
“What are you smiling about?” Ana asked.
“I’ll tell you later.”
Damien wasn’t ready to tell her that he had already started planning for their future. He knew she loved him and that she wanted to be with him, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t be scared if he brought up the conversation about babies.
By the time they got to the kitchen, Damien’s mother had already pulled out the ingredients for a sandwich.
“How was it?” Damien asked, planting himself next to Alan.
Alan was animated as he spoke about everything he saw and experienced. He could barely get all the words out as he bit into his sandwich like he was a starving animal. As Alan started to finish his food, his head started bobbing and his blinks got longer.
“Did he get any sleep in the car?” Ana asked, taking one last bite of her food before picking him up.
“No, he talked. All the way home,” Carl chuckled.
Damien
put his hand on the back of Alan’s head and smiled gently at him as he laid his head on Ana’s shoulder.
“I’m going to put him to bed for a bit,” she said, turning. Instinctively, Damien leaned in and kissed the side of her mouth tenderly.

“I’m going to take some calls,” Carl said quickly, excusing himself.
Damien stood with his back against the counter, sipping on some water. “Something on your mind, Mom?” he asked, feeling her eyes on him.
“Come sit with me,” she said. Damien was fully prepared for a lecture or some bad news. He was wondering which one it would be.
He sat down and sighed before meeting her gaze.
“I am so proud of you. You know that, don’t you?” she said, grabbing Damien’s free hand and rubbing it between her small
ones.
Damien didn’t know how to respond. He lowered his eyes and stared at the table, waiting for the inevitable “but.
“I love you, Damien. You are my son. I see you with that little boy and… you are so amazing. I think you should know that the entire him we were gone, he talked about you.”
Damien smiled unconsciously. “He did?”
Dianne nodded. “He spoke about everything you two did together. I am glad to hear my tricks about peeing worked out.” she smirked, making Damien chuckle. “He loves you so much, Damien.”
“I love him, too.” he sighed.
“And you love Anastasia.” It wasn’t posed as a question.
Damien nodded immediately. “I do.”
Dianne looked at him but he couldn’t read her expression. “You’ve come a long way, son. Not only are you good with Alan, but you are so good with Ana.”
“Good with Ana?”
Dianne raised her hand to his jaw and cupped it gently. “You’re good together as a couple and a family. The man you are with them is the man I have always wished you would grow up to be.”
“Thank you… That really makes me happy.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes before Carl returned.
“That son of yours can eat, let me tell you that,” he said pulling a seat out for himself.
“I know,” Damien chuckled. “Did I eat this much when I was younger?”
“Close. You know, he ate an entire plate of saucy wings for dinner last night.”
Damien glanced at his mother. “That must have been interesting.”
Dianne rolled her eyes. “It was your father’s idea. Don’t look at me. I tried to get the stains out of his shirt, but all I had was the bathroom sink and I didn’t have time to send it to the laundry. I put it in a plastic bag. I don’t know if it is salvageable.”
When Carl and Dianne left, Damien found Ana snuggled in bed with Alan. They were both fast asleep. He didn’t have the heart to wake either of them up. Moreover, he feared that if she did wake up, she would want to leave.
But eventually, she did wake up. They went about their night right up to the moment she would leave for her house. Damien had no idea if he should ask her to stay. Yes, they had stayed over at each other’s places before, but their relationship had changed since then.
“I don’t want you to leave,” Damien said, his voice sounding weak.
“Yeah. I didn’t want to leave either.”
Damien breathed in relief and prepared for bed that night.
