Chapter 80
Chapter 80
Ana continued to sit with her head filled with thoughts. She needed to figure out what she would tell Damien. Conversations like those were better when there was an outline. That was why she hadn’t called Marcus back yet. Alan had asked about him. a few times and Ana just explained that Marcus was really busy with work.
After Damien bathed Alan and got him ready for bed, Ana moved to the bedroom to tuck him in. She read him his favorite book. and then rang to him until his eyes grew heavy with sleep.
She could feel Damien’s gaze on her back, but he turned and left the room just as she stood up to leave. Her feet fell heavy as she went to join him, but if they wanted to rnove past the situation, they needed to talk.
He was seated at the dining table when she reached. Ana sat down across from him and stared at her hands, waiting for her nail paint to chip away.
“Ana, I know you are mad at me…” his voice suddenly broke through the silence.
“I am not mad at you.”
“You’re not?”
“No, I’m not.”
“Then why are you-”
“I said I wasn’t mad at you, Damien. I didn’t say I wasn’t upset.”
Damien looked utterly confused.
ww
Ana swallowed and pursed her lips together before speaking. “I am upset at the situation. Like I told Carmen, we were not together and you were free to do whatever you wanted. But that doesn’t make the truth that you were with her any easier.”
“Why did you speak to her about this? This has nothing to do with her.”
“Because I am a human, Damien,” she snapped. “She was standing there with
from me because I wasn’t enough for you.”
“But you know that is not true,” he protested.
his victorious grin, thinking that you strayed
“I know that, but she doesn’t. I couldn’t sit there with her every time we worked together and allow her to gloat. Do you know how painful it was to find out that I am your girlfriend but she knows your body better than I do?”
Damien reached across the table and grabbed her hand. “No, Ana, she doesn’t. I told you I don’t remember what happened with her, but I do know that you have more of me than anyone could ever have. Those nights after we parted, I had all these emotions flooding my system. More emotions than I had ever felt. The second I woke up, I knew it was a mistake…”
Ana’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t remember anything?”
Ana had already suspected as much the first time he had said it. Liam had said some of the guys in the picture looked knocked out. Ana didn’t know how Carmen had the opportunity to spike the drink, but it was possible. But why would she do it?
Damien shook his head. “I remember her approaching me at the bar and then I woke up at her place. I don’t remember going home with her and I don’t remember doing anything. I am pretty sure we didn’t even have sex. Maybe she just-”
Damien stopped talking, probably because of the expression on Ana’s face.
“What?”
“Do you know how much you had to drink?” she asked.
“I don’t know…”
“Enough to make you black out completely?”
Ana could see him thinking. “I don’t remember. Why?”
Chapter 80
Ana was unsure if she should tell him about what Liam had said about Carmen’s little box of insurance. She decided to be
honest.
“Liam and Carmen were dating until a few months ago. He found a box of pictures in her closet.”
Damien’s expression hardened.
“The pictures were of men in her bed. Liam said they were naked and looked like they had been drugged or had passed out.”
Damien shuddered. “Did she have one… of me?”
“I don’t know. Liam doesn’t know you. So, if there was, he wouldn’t have recognized you anyway.”
“You think she drugged me?”
Ana shrugged. “We’ll never know.”
“But why would she keep something like that?”
“She told Liam they were insurance policies…”
Damien looked like Ana had slapped him. “She said that?” He looked panicked.
“She’s screwed up, Damien. I don’t know what she is doing. We can speculate all we want, but we will never know.”
They sat in silence for a second but then Damien held her hand firmly. “Do you remember being safe?”
“Yes, there was evidence of it. Furthermore, I got fully tested. Seeing that she has no kids. I would say I am okay.”
Ana stared at Damien for a moment. He had such a distressed expression on her face that she wanted to pull him into a hug. Damien stood up and helped her to her feet. He towered over her. “Do you want me to go?” he asked sadly.
Ana looked at the fear in her eyes. She could see he dreaded her walking away from him. She lifted her hand to his jaw and he bent down, meeting her in a slow kiss. “I love you,” she whispered.
“You forgive me then?” he said as his lips rested on her temple and his arms slid over her shoulders.
“There is nothing to forgive. This is just a speed bump in the road. We have survived more than this already. If I allow this to destroy us, then she wins. I am not about to let her win. You are mine, Damien Wright, and I don’t intend on ever letting you
go.”
His shoulder relaxed and he squeezed her tighter. Ana was fairly certain she heard him say something along the lines of “Only yours” against her skin.
“Do you want to come for breakfast in the morning?” he asked, changing the subject.
She nodded. “I’ll bring Alan over first thing.”
She walked Damien to the door. She didn’t want him to leave but it was for the best. With their chaotic emotions, she couldn’t guarantee that they would be able to control themselves and she knew that Damien was wanting to do things right away.
“Do you still want alone time with me tomorrow?” he asked.
Ana couldn’t help but laugh. “Is that what you are worried about?”
