Chapter Chapter Twenty
A usual day consisted of getting my stomach measured, my blood pressure taken, and my weight. Then, off to breakfast with the rest of the entire floor. Hundred of women, pregnant or waiting to be pregnant. After that, we were divided up to do chores. I never minded working in the nursery.
"See you in a little bit." I waved to Cali, after she had dropped me off at the nursery. The babies I had been taking care of were a few months old. That day, there was a brand new baby. "Who is this?" I asked the nurse. It was odd that a new baby would be in the nursery.
"Oh yea, just born today!" She said.
"Why isn't the mother taking care of it?" I asked.
She laughed, "Silly, you don't keep your baby after. They get sent to the nursery and then they grow until they can sustain themselves and they get sent out to another feeder farm, like the first level." She turned around. She realized I had no clue, "OH, I'm sorry." She slipped into the nursery office to escape the confrontation.
I held the small baby in arms. It was so tiny and frail.
How could they steal you from your mother?
I couldn't believe they would do that. All the woman on that floor got along effortlessly. The Guards kept chocolate in their pockets!
"Pssst. Psssst!" There was annoying sound coming from the doorway. I ignored it, still glued on the infant. I stroked its' hair as a tear fell from my cheek. "Christi!!!" The voice whispered frantically.
I turned around to see Martin waving, trying to get my attention. "What are you doing here!?" I was sure that no one knew where I was.
"Uh, you went M-I-S-S-I-N-G!" He said dramatically. "Plus, I missed you!" He walked in, examining the infant in my arms. "Ew." He changed paths and walked over to the next thing that caught his eye.
"I didn't go missing. I got transferred." I put the baby down. I watched in amazement as Martin started sniffing a jar of butt paste. "Put it down."
"Is it true?" Martin pointing to the slight pudge under my puke pink maternity shirt. I nodded. "Oh..." He sounded disappointed.
"What?" I asked.
Martin took a long breath in and exhaled, "That just means we have to try harder to fix R."
I looked down, "Why would it matter? He's with her."
"We found out she's been baiting him with her blood. He's so blood drunk, he can't think straight. He's addicted to her blood. He's not attracted to her. He doesn't love her." Martin spilled everything. It didn't make me feel any better. He had her and I had...
This.
I rubbed my stomach lightly. I had to try to get used to it. But, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't. "It still doesn't mean anything." I had noticed that Martin was watching me cradle my bump. I dropped my hands to my sides.
"It does and I'll prove it!" With that he ran out of the nursery. His giggles bounced off the glass walls.
The next day I woke up expecting some crazy antics from Martin, but the day went on as usual. When Cali had come to get me after my check up, she had noticed.
"What's up with you?" She peered ahead as if she were looking at what I was looking at.
"Uh, nothing. Just making sure nothing was coming." I said, still looking as if something was coming.
"You're acting weird. Do you need chocolate or something?" She began to reach in her pocket.
"No, I'll be fine." I chuckled.
Cali had taken me to the laundry room. I flipped over the load in the wash and put a new load in. "I'll come to get you in a little bit weirdo!" She joked.
I was left to work alone. I didn't mind. It gave me plenty of time to look over my shoulder every five minutes.
"Knock knock." Cali knocked on the frame of the door.
I looked back at her, confused. "You were gone for only five minutes!" I had only gotten to fold two baby blankets.
"I know, but I got a call over the radio. You're wanted in the Matron's office." She sounded serious. "What did you do?"
Ah, there it is. What are you up to Martin?
"I didn't do anything!" I proclaimed.
Cali took me to the Matron's office. One knock and no answer. Second knock and still no answer. Cali's third knock was more of some banging and yelling, all mixed together. "Matron, I am here!" She screamed.
"Quiet! Oh, you wretched girl." The Matron pulled the door open just to shut Cali up. "Come in Christi." She rushed us both in.
"I am so proud to have you here with my today." She bubbled over with excitement, "To think, we had you right under our nose!" She chuckled. I stood silently, unsure of what to say. "Oh, your Grace! Do come in!"
Confused, I turned around. The Elder Aldrich slowly walked in. He greeted the Matron as if she was his little sister. They fawned over each other. "Ah, I am so pleased you contacted me. I was very intrigued when you told me about this and then come to find it was my pet!" He sounded so normal. All the sound of normalcy from his mouth still couldn't hide the fact that he was a monster.
"So am I. Between you and me: It sounds like we have a traitor on the island." She snickered.
"Oh, what a delightful thought! I wouldn't mind a little war." He sat on the corner of her desk, leaning over her. She was completely infatuated with him.
"Well, now what do you propose we do about your little pet?" She said, redirecting his attention to me.
"Ah, yes. Well, I will need you to make sure that the baby had a vampire father and not a humans' and then we will go on from there." He stood up. All of his attention was on me. He floated towards me effortlessly. "I've missed my little pet." His long nails snuck their way under my shirt. His hand pressed against the bump. It gave me a sickening feeling.
