Chapter Chapter Nineteen
The ringing in my ear woke me up. I flinched from the pain in my head, only to realize how sore my body was. "Owww!" I gasped.
"Oh dear, you're awake!" That voice sounded familiar. "Let me push some more of these meds through and you won't feel a thing!" She said.
I opened my eyes to find myself in a hospital bed. "Why am I not dead?" I groaned. I tried to sit up, but the drugs had kicked in.
"I'm just glad we found you in time. You're my favorite around here!" The Doctor giggle, "But don't tell anyone!"
I had given up trying to sit up, "What happened?" I tried to regain my thoughts, but I was still foggy.
That Guard...
"You were attacked..." The cheeriness in her voice disappeared. "We do need to have a talk about that, but for now." She pulled up a seat next to me, "Let's get you feeling better shall we?" She already had a cup of tea in hand for me.
"Where's-" I stopped myself. All the pain medications in the world couldn't stop me from forgetting that he had marked someone else.
"Well..." The smile she wore everyday had been wiped off her face, "Thankfully, you won't be seeing him anytime soon. After tomorrow you'll be transferred to a different floor." She couldn't even look at me.
Had I done something?
"What do you mean?" My adrenaline kicked in. The haze had lifted, putting my emotions into over drive.
"I'm gonna grab some equipment and I'll be back." She left the cup on the bedside table.
When she returned with a ultrasound machine I antagonized her. "What the fuck are you trying to tell me?!" Anger soared through me. My fight response took over.
She started it up and plugged in her badge, "Just listen to me first, okay? I will answer every question you have." She took a seat, holding out her hands.
"What happened?"
She looked down, afraid to make eye contact, "A few weeks ago someone falsified the schedules. You were meant to be in the infirmary with me, but a Guard had lied and said you were needed else where. Do you remember that?" She pulled her hands back when she realized that I wasn't going to hold them.
"Yes. The bathroom was already cleaned. I told the Guard and he threw the door stopper into my stomach...And then..." I trailed off.
"Yes, he beat you until you were unconscious. From there..." She stopped to readjust herself, "He raped you."
The machine beeped. It almost distracted me. "How long have I been out for?" My head was putting two and two together finally.
"Three weeks. Give or take." She wheeled the machine over to the bed. "Some of your blood work came back. It shows elevated levels of HCG, which means you are pregnant." She held the wand in her hand and waited for my response.
I laid there dumbfounded. I never planned for this to happened, I didn't even want it. "Last question: Why do you work for these terrible people?" I looked the other way as she pulled back the blanket and smeared the warm jelly across my abdomen.
"Everyone here is a prisoner, not just the humans. We all have a debt to pay, some greater than others." She placed the wand on my abdomen and rolled it around. I kept facing the wall. I told myself I didn't need to see it.
"Is it over?" I asked.
"Yes, I'll clean you up." She wiped the jelly off and placed the blanket over me. "So, we have a lot to discuss. Would you want your other friends here for the rest of it?" She pushed the machine into the corner of the room.
"Uh, no. That's okay." I wasn't sure, honestly.
"So with this information, the Elders were notified. You'll be moved to a maternity ward until they decide what to do with you." The weight of the Doctor's words crashed down on me like bricks.
"Why the Elders?" I got confused.
"The Guard was a vampire and you are a human. You carry the gene." She said blankly. This all seemed so unfair.
They had given me the day to have some privacy until I was moved. I don't think the Doctor had even told R or any of them where I had gone. As soon as I was transferred, everything changed.
"I will be your new Matron." My eyes focused on a broken tile in the office as the woman spoke. "Unlike, the first floor, we run things very differently..." They had slapped a new uniform on me before I had been brought to her office. A god awful pastel pink jumpsuit something or other. "...You are free to go." The new Matron had said. I was just in time to snap out of it.
"T-Thank you." I stuttered and stood up from the chair.
"Come with me." A female Guard opened the door for me, "I know you didn't pay attention at all to her speech so I'll go easy on you. Your first assignment is to work in the nursery, I'll get you acclimated and then you're on your own from there." She spoke sincerely.
The layout of the second floor was drastically different from the first. It looked like it had been one giant room at one point, split up by giant glass walls. Every inch of the place was see through. Ugly pink and blue curtains were used for privacy.
The biggest thing I noticed was that there was hardly any males. Most of the Guards were woman and the doctors too. I had gotten a little too curious one day and asked the Guard who usually escorted me.
"Hey Cali, How come there is only females on this floor?" I asked brazenly. It had made her spit out her coffee.
"Its just a more laid back gig. When you get all big and fat, you don't fight." She wiped her face. "Plus, at that point. You'd do anything for chocolate!" She revealed her secret stash of chocolate in a pant pocket. She handed me one and said, "See? Now if I ask you something, you'll do it!" She patted my head, like a dog. I didn't mind Cali, I didn't mind most of the Guards on that floor.
