Chapter Chapter Ten
Unexpectedly, R detached his badge from his belt and tossed it on the bed. "Escape." His voice was deep and cracked.
He Spoke!
My mind raced with a hundred different questions. I was in disbelief that I had actually heard that, it was late at night. It could've been my imagination. I could've just been sleep deprived. Regardless, I had to focus.
I slipped the badge in the pocket of my sweats and covered myself with the blankets in bed. R gave me one more look before disappearing into the shadows of the hall. I glanced back at the clock to measure how much sleep I was going to lose. I tossed and turned in my bed, R's voice was swirling around in my head.
A sound had woken me up. I peeled an eye open to look at the clock. I hadn't been asleep for very long. I looked around, but everyone was still asleep.
That's weird.
I thought. I closed my eye. Whatever it was, it would have to wait till after I got a few hours of sleep.
The rustling became more persistent. I was sure there was someone in our pod. I sat up and opened my eyes. Anton was standing at the end of my bed. He raised his finger to his lips.
Before I could suck in enough air to scream, he clamped down on my mouth with his hand. "Shhh!" He waited till I had stopped moving, "Where is it? I know you have it. I saw you getting close to that Guard." He accused me. He ripped the covers off of me and began searching for it, weaseling his hands underneath me.
"Stop! Get off of me!" I pushed him away and slowly pulled the badge out of my pocket. "You have it. Now leave me be!" I flipped over and covered myself back up with blankets.
"Oh no you don't bitch." Anton grabbed me by my shoulder and yanked me back. "Everyone is going." He snarled. "Let's go!"
Anton forced everyone to get out of bed and shoved us out into the hall. Several others who were ripped out of their beds had also been pooled into the halls by Thad's lackeys. I could tell none of us wanted to do this. Fear plastered their faces as they were ushered down the halls.
Anton kept a tight grip on me, "Making sure you don't run off on me." He sneered in my ear, "Bait."
Fear consumed me, maybe a little more than the others. Was I bait? For what?
Everyone huddled together the closer we got to the end of Thad's plan. It seemed to get colder and colder. They led us through the kitchens and down a tunnel. It was so cold, I started to shiver. That could only mean two things and I was really hopping it was the first thing.
When we had reached a door at the end of the tunnel, I immediately knew what the cold was from. I stared at the door that had ice frozen all around its' edges.
Whimpers came from others while Thad furiously slammed into the door repeatedly. "Fucking....Door" He screamed. Anton tried to quiet him, but Thad's rage was quickly exploding.
I could feel the frost through my flimsy slippers. It was winter. Once we reached outside we would be hit by sea side winds, the coldest of winds. None of us were equipped to endure any of that.
"Got it!" Thad shouted. My stomach balled into a knot and dropped. The door opened and a gush of cold winter air hit us. It was a snow storm out there. "Everybody move! Head towards the boats!" Thad shouted. I could barely hear him of the whistle of the wind.
Mindlessly, the others walked out into the storm. Their figures vanished after the first step. "Your turn." Anton hummed in a sickly tune. He pushed me out of the door and a clump of snow got inside my slipper with the first step.
"You will be the reason we all die out here!" I grabbed Anton's hand and ripped it off. I stumbled back and fell...down a cliff. No one had anticipated that the first few steps lead to a straight drop off.
I hit the next landing hard. The snow didn't buffer the feeling of my body crashing onto rock. It made me gasped out for air. "Come back here!" Anton slowly slid down the rocks to get to me. I rolled onto my back. I was going to look him in the eye if he was going to kill me.
He collected a handful of my shirt in his hands and raised his hand to strike me down, but a loud siren had sprung to life. It made both of us jerk. "What the fuck is that?" Anton looked around.
But we both knew what that sound was. We had heard it a million times. At first, I had wondered why it went off. Was it scheduled? Did it have importance? But after I heard the alarm from outside, I knew.
The alarm was for us.
Oh no...
