Chapter 19
~Leah’s POV~
Headed in the direction of my mate and Emily’s father, I caught the tail end of their conversation.
“...follow the tracks and let the Council know what is going on.”
‘Devin.,’ I loved saying his name, even if it was not aloud.
He turned to me with a distracted air but his focus quickly centered on me.
“Leah, honey, what is it?” he questioned with a raised brow.
‘I know you want to follow the tracks that were left behind, but there may be another way to locate my sister,’ at this he straightened from the desk and faced me fully.
“What do you mean Leah?”
His words stopped all conversation in the room. A pin could drop, and I’d be able to hear the tiny ting it would make as it ricocheted off the floor. Now that I had everyone’s attention, my skin began to tingle with the stares burrowing into my form. I had been alone for so long, it was hard to be around all of these people and have their focus centered on me. Shrugging off the uneasy feelings swirling in my stomach, I opened my link for all in the room to hear what I had to say.
‘I believe Jack was going to suggest it, but he is not in any condition to think clearly,’ I took a deep breath before continuing. ‘I have the ability to connect with any wolf, and I do mean any. If I am able to connect with Emily, then I can try and trace her connection to where she is being held.’
Before I could continue, Devin blew up, “No! There is no way you are going to hunt for your sister and the bastard that took her. I will not risk losing you again to this madman!”
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. Devin had never yelled at me in the short time we have known each other. He always spoke softly and sweetly, as if he were afraid I would break at the of a loud noise.
Well, my sexy mate had to rethink his position on the matter. I was not some weak little girl. I had survived horrors no one should ever know about, and he was trying to keep me from saving my sister from a similar fate. Oh no. I was not going to let that happen.
Taking a calming breath, I shrank my link to only include Devin, ‘You listen hear, mate.’ I sneered into his mind, ‘I will help find my sister. I was the one that saw her being taken. I can and will help. You have no right to raise your voice to me. I know you want me by your side at all times, but I have to do this. Nothing you say will stop me from finding my sister and helping bring her home.’
With that, I turned on my heal and left the room at a fast pace. I noticed the man everyone was calling a spy leaning against the wall outside the office. Unfortunately, he was human so there was no way for me to ask if he was all right, or even read his mind to see if there was something sinister going on.
Deciding to leave it be for now, I headed in the direction I could feel Jack and Alexander’s presence. They were both in Emily’s room, standing on opposite ends of the room.
What in the world happened between these two? Why do they look like they want to kill each other?
Sighing, I stepped into the room so I was between the two men who made an unexpected appearance in my life.
~Jack’s POV~
Pulling myself up off the floor, I walked around Emily’s room. My fingers brushed lightly over the foot of her bed, the dresser, her closet door, everything.
Opening the middle drawer of her dresser, I found an oversized shirt. It looked like one she would wear to bed. Removing it, I held it up to my nose. Her scent enveloped me. Tears threatened once more, but I needed to be strong for her now. I couldn’t afford to breath down again.
A noise in the doorway had me spinning and getting into a defensive position. Unconsciously, my hand reached for the gun I would normally wear on my hip, silently cursing myself for not having it on my person. Ever since meeting Emily, I had not wanted to risk wearing it in case she was uncomfortable with what I did for a living. I didn’t want to scare her away before we even got a chance to know each other.
Now. Now, I don’t have to worry about it as she is gone.
‘Get a hold of yourself!’ My wolf yelled. ‘You’re not alone remember! Get your head out of your ass and pay attention!’
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sneak up on you.”
Ah crap. It was the douche bag that tried to attack my Luna and cared only about himself. What the Hell did he want?
Instead of answering, I stayed in my defensive position and waited to see what the ass would do next.
After a long silence, he finally stepped into the room, and a growl reverberated in my chest. How dare he step foot in this room! He had no right to be here!
He stopped short and shot me a look of confusion before understanding dawned on his face.
“Listen, I only wanted to come up here and apologize to you. I had no clue that it was my sister that was taken.”
“So it would be okay to act like a jackass if it was someone else mate that was taken,” I spit out at him. “How big of the mighty Alpha!” sarcasm ringing in my tone.
Anger surged through the young man before me. Hang on, did he say my Em was his sister? No. No way, was she related to this sorry excuse for a wolf before me. He had no right to claim her as family when he acts the way he does.
I was going to rip him to pieces when Leah stepped between us. When did she get here? Never mind, the punk ass needs to learn a lesson in manners and how to behave like a true were and not some stuck up asshole.
‘Jack calm down,’ Leah’s calming voice flowed through me, ‘I need to talk to the both of you and I cannot do so if you are intent on killing each other.’
She turned her face towards me, but still keeping her focus on the Alpha across the room from me.
Tilting her head, she looked between the two of us, ‘Although, I could let you two fight it out, so you can get whatever this is out of your system.’
Was she really going to let us fight it out? I would love to rip into the conceited ass before me. I hope she gave the okay so I could relieve some of the anger simmering inside of me.
‘On second thought, I do not believe I will do that,’ disappointment flooded through me, ‘Now, both of you sit down and listen to me. If either one of you tries to fight with the other then you will not be coming with me to find Emily. Do I make myself clear?’
What?! She was going after Emily! What the Hell was she thinking?!
Jumping up from the seat I had just taken, I was about to yell my thoughts at her when she interrupted.
‘I know what you are going to say Jack, and it is nothing that Devin has not already told me. I will tell you what I told him. I am not fragile, and I will help find my sister in any way I can. You were going to ask Devin this same thing before things got out of hand. So, sit down and listen to me before you start yelling at me.’
Properly chastised, I sat again and noticed that the boy had not taken a seat when Leah asked and I shot him a pointed glance. Rolling his eyes, he finally collapsed onto the rumpled blankets of Emily’s bed. I wanted to growl at him, but I restrained myself needing to hear what Leah had to say.
Silently, she paced around the room. I figured it was to get her thoughts together, but in the next instance Devin showed up in Emily’s doorway. Leah stopped her pacing and gave her mate a loving glance.
With his head down, Devin entered the room and toward Leah. Once he reached her he grabbed her up in his arms and held her as if he was afraid she would slip through his fingers at any moment.
Eventually, he loosened his grip, but only to turn her around to face me and Alexander.
Looking first at her brother and then at me, she said, ‘Now that everyone is here, here is what we are going to do...’
