Blinding Light (BLS Book 1)

Chapter BLS 1: {41}

Mila

I’m not awake.

But I am.

I’ve been sleeping for twelve years…trapped in my mind, if that’s

even…no, it is possible. I’ve experienced it.

I need to figure out the truth.

I thought I already did.

Something’s missing.

Figure it out.

Don’t…forget…

***

I lay the piece of paper on my pillow. Once I come back here, if I do forget, this will jolt me awake. I need to figure out something.

I sigh out loud; frustration hits me harder than ever.

How am I supposed to find something when I don’t know what the something is?!

I cradle my face between my palms, my cold fingertips tracing my warm skin.

I don’t even know what time it is. It’s probably about to be morning…dawn. Just as I predicted it, a single sun ray shines into my cabin; it lights up the room—just a little. I bring myself to sit closer to it, letting its warmth warm my cold, broken body. I don’t know how long I sit there. I don’t even recall what happened during the tour.

I need to find Raven.

When I reach the door, it’s no longer splintered to pieces.

What?

I reach out and touch the rough frame. It’s intact and perfect—as if nothing had happened.

Was it all just my imagination? I let that thought consume me for a second too long.

No. That wasn’t. Something is wrong with this place, and I need to find my way out of here. Oui, I need to find Raven.

I pull on a cloak and cry out as a sudden pain hits me.

This is what happened…

No, not now! I need to find Raven.

She’s gone.

What? No. No, she’s not. I just need to find her!

“Sweet, sweet, Mila.”

I look up and see Nolan’s face.

“You’re dead. You’re just my imagination.”

“Am I really?”

“Mila!” A different voice shouts.

I clutch my head. The throbbing subsides, and I see the pair of amber eyes that I dread to look at.

“Go away!” I shout.

“Mila! Wake up!” I feel myself being shaken violently. My eyes adjust, and I don’t see Nolan anymore. Instead, it’s Raven. I let out a shuddering breath and cling onto her.

“Shh. It’s okay.”

Shh, Mila—my brother.

“Non,” I push her away.

This isn’t real.

“Raven…you’re not here. I know now. I know the truth. Or the half-truth.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Something happened to you, isn’t that right?” I couldn’t bring myself to look at her as my voice cracks.

She tilts her head in confusion, “What in the heavens—”

“Don’t!” I cut her off. “Don’t try to be like her. Don’t try to manipulate me. I know something happened to you—something I did.”

My brain swirls with confusion, with panic. I did something. Something horrible, unbelieving.

“I seriously don’t know what you’re talking about, Mila.”

“Shut up! I know,” I breathed, clutching my head. “I know something happened. I’m not crazy. I’m not crazy,” I whisper to myself and Raven frowns.

“Mila! Wake up and look around. This is where you are. What in the heavens are you talking about that I’m not here?! I’m right here. Right in front of you.”

“Non…”

“Yes,” she counters. “Do you not see me?”

“Who are you looking at right now?”

The two voices sounded in my head, driving me crazy.

“Non…” I answer and my body trembles.

“Well, I do,” she comes closer to me. Her warm hands clutch my face. Her pale green eyes are staring right into mine. “I see you, and I’m right here.” She whispers, her beautiful pink lips moving with her beautifully made face. With such perfection. From her small button nose down to her lightly tanned skin that pops her pale eyes and full lips. Her cheeks fill with the lightest blush just naturally, perfectly toned.

This is my sister.

“You’re right here,” I whisper back. Whatever anger that I had not only slips away, but it’s like I have been forced to forgive. I give her a small smile.

“Right, you’re okay. Let’s go.” Raven grabs my hand.

“Okay.”

She smiles back and leads me out.
