Blinding Light (BLS Book 1)

Chapter BLS 1: {18} ~ PART 2

Mila

I don’t know when I wake up, but it’s early morning when I do. It was still quite dark. I can’t fully recall anything from the previous night. My memories are not serving their purpose, making me forget so many things.

Something has been taken away from me, ripped out.

I shake the thought off.

“Don’t…”

I know better than to look around. This voice never seems to go away.

Don’t what? Why are you constantly talking in riddles? Why are you in my head?

Am I insane yet?

“Don’t…”

There was a long pause before it continued, with a word that will haunt me for the days to come.

“Forget…”

Then it’s gone.

A few hours later…

All the suitors gather at the front of the now moving ship once more. Nolan stands in the front again, since neither the king nor the queen was here.

“Due to the illness of Mademoiselle Hayes,” he addresses, “We’ve decided to postpone the event as it requires all the suitor’s participating.” I give him a small smile and he nods at me.

“Onto the third event of the Suitor’s Campaign. Exploration of Miracle Island. Our founders first built the colony of Iwera here, and it has survived. Today, it’s a small town for us to explore. We will build a campfire in the night once everyone’s gathered away from the town.”

Applauses sounds and some people cheer after that. I, on the other hand, did not look forward to that event. Camping at the historical site of Iwera...?

BORING.

“There will be short games we will all participate in. Alas, it is only a one-day event, we are leaving by morning. So, enjoy yourselves!”

He smiles at everyone as the ship comes to a stop.

“Enjoy Miracle Island.”

The anchor gets thrown down. I didn’t even notice when we’ve arrived. A beautiful little Miracle Island stands before me. Its palm trees cover the sandy beach, glistening a beautiful, almost unnatural gold shade. The contrast with the leaves of the palm trees is astonishing. I gawk before Raven pushes me. I glare at her and she glares back.

“Stop gawking like a pudding-headed fellow (idiot). Let’s go!” She nudges me forward, towards everybody else, who has been stepping off the ship onto shore. The boat is dangerously close to shore that I don’t understand how it will ever get back out to sea.

Oh well, I’m sure they’ll figure it out.

“Miracle Island was established an eon ago by shoddyocracies (merchants). Some still live here, and if you’re lucky, you might be able to stumble across some of the artifacts they sell.” Nolan explains as we all follow suit. He heads us into the center of the island, people making way for him as he passes. I catch a couple of whispers.

“He’s so handsome.”

“Isn’t that the prince of Iwera?”

“Someone told me the prince is visiting today, no one told me he was so good looking. I bet if I could, I can get—” I block out the rest of that sentence. I shake my head and quicken my pace, her voice soon drowned out by the chattering people and clattering objects throughout the center markets, I’m assuming.

“This place is a miracle,” Raven says.

“Hmm. It is, isn’t it? It’s so peaceful and quiet, no loud but peaceful.” I frown, my tongue not obeying my commands. Raven giggles at my stumble upon my words.

Just as my legs start to burn from the long walk, we arrive at our campsite. Wooden cabins are built-in already, waiting eagerly to be used. I suddenly spot Asher with everyone else. Disgust fills my face.

What is he of all people doing here? I thought Raven already told him to tell Minister Kaine that I no longer needed his services.

As soon as I make eye contact with him, a headache hits me so unexpectedly that I stumble, one hand to my forehead. My finger brushes my temple and it sends a shiver down my spine.

“You alright, Mila? That seasickness still got you?” Raven links one arm with mine to steady me. I can hear the sarcasm in her voice when she asks.

“I’m fine.” But as soon as I say those words, the headache gets worse—it multiplies.

I groan. I look over and I thought I saw Asher smiling before everything blacks out.

In…

Out…

Raven’s face fades in and out of focus, multiplies. I’m staring at six eyes instead of four. No…two.

Two eyes.

Am I going insane?

“No…”

What do you want from me?

“To remember…don’t forget…”

It’s speaking in riddles…AGAIN.

I lash out, my arms going out involuntarily before me, grabbing something soft, something killable. The realization brings such shameful pleasures in me, making me furious as red fills the sides of my vision before something cracks.
