Chapter 84
The bonfire was lit up in front of Ronald’s house a while later.
Ronald’s family and Katerine’s family represented the two villages respectively.
Seeing that Ronald lit a bonfire as well, some villagers who were sitting in front of Katerine’s house secretly added firewood
to the fire.
To make the flames stronger, one of the villagers even knelt on one knee and used tongs to move the firewood in the middle of the bonfire around.
They felt so good when they saw that their bonfire was stronger than Ronald’s.
The villagers who were with Ronald shouted, “Hey! Katerine’s bonfire is brighter than ours. If we don’t make ours a little brighter, they will look down upon us.”
“Ronald, I remember you have a blower at home, right?” someone asked.
Ronald’s wife Mona said, “We don’t have such a thing. We’re building a fire outside. There’s no need to use a blower. Our bonfire will be stronger than theirs as long as we add more firewood. I’ll go get some.”
With that, Mona went to the woodshed.
“I have a blower at home. I’ll go get it now.” A villager ran home to get the blower with a strong flashlight in his hand.
Jackson was sitting in a chair with his hands stretched out towards the bonfire. Though he looked like he was warming himself up by the fire, he kept looking in the direction of Katerine’s house.
The two families were not far from each other, but as it was so dark outside, he could only see people’s silhouettes around the bonfire.
Though Jackson couldn’t see Vanessa’s face, he knew that she was there.
“Mr. Foster, there are three mountains in our village. The one behind us is called Mount Yanstall. Legend has it that a girl used to cultivate here. When she became immortal and was about to leave, she stomped on the mountain and split it into two. To thank the villagers here, she made a vow before she left that one part of the mountain would produce gypsum while the other part would produce wild vegetables. Therefore, there are many mushrooms and medical herbs in this mountain,” Mr. Lynch introduced the situation of the mountains to Jackson.
A villager echoed, “That’s right. The gypsum in the mountain is of good quality and well–known in the nearby villages. Many people in our village live on it. Shirley put her three kids through college with the money she sold for gypsum.”
“Mr. Foster, are you listening?” Mr. Lynch had long noticed that Jackson was distracted, but he thought it would be inappropriate to expose him. Seeing Jackson in a daze, Mr. Lynch was afraid that he was feeling unwell and couldn’t help asking.
“Huh? Sorry, I just thought of a set of data. Please continue.” Jackson retracted his gaze as he spoke.
Seeing that he was fine, Mr. Lynch continued, “Mr. Foster, after breakfast at eight o’clock tomorrow morning, we’ll go up the three mountains. Then I’ll take you to have a look at the fields and fungus bases in the village. Is the arrangement okay for you?”
“Sure,” Jackson replied.
Mr. Lynch added, “It’s settled then. Let’s go to Mount Yanstall first. We can pick some mushrooms there and have at mushroom feast for our lunch tomorrow. Mona, I’ll have to trouble you again.”

At this time, Mona had already come back with firewood. She said with a smile while adding firewood to the bonfire, “Hey, what are you talking about? I wish I can do such meaningful things every day. I want everyone in our village to get rich.”
The villagers couldn’t help praising her. “Mona, you’re right. It’s best if everyone can get rich.”
“Yes. Let’s work together to make a better life.”
Jackson’s eyes became dull again. He didn’t hear what Mr. Lynch said next and kept looking at the bonfire opposite him. Seeing that, Mr. Lynch wondered if Jackson had some taboo and was unhappy to see their bonfire weaker than the others.
At the thought of this, he said, “Everyone, add more firewood to make the flames stronger!”
“Alright, the villagers answered and continued to add firewood to the bonfire.
The blaze became increasingly brighter.
Aspark jumped onto Jackson’s suit, but he did not notice it at all.
After a while, a burn hole appeared in his suit.
Elmer was sitting beside Jackson and was the first to notice it. “Mr. Hawk, you’re on fire.”

As he spoke, Elmer reached out to pat Jackson’s hand.
Jackson did not sense anything wrong before Elmer reminded him about this. When he looked down and saw a small hole in his sleeve, he immediately got up and shook his hand. The sparks burned through his clothes and fell onto his skin. Sensing the pain, he quickened shaking his hand.
Elmer was so frightened that he hurriedly patted Jackson’s clothes, trying to put out the sparks.
Mr. Lynch jumped up from his stool in horror and said. “Mr. Foster, hurry up and take off your coat!”
He thought, “This is too bad. I wanted him to warm himself up by the fire. How come his clothes are on fire? The collaboration is going to fail again.”
“Don’t worry. I’m fine.” Jackson did not take off his clothes. He could tell that the sparks had gone out, so he returned to his chair and sat down. “Everyone, continue chatting”
As long as he sat here, he felt like he was very close to Vanessa.
“Mr. Foster, your suit…” Mr. Lynch was still a little nervous.
He was about to say that he would pay for a new one.
However, he was afraid that if the suit cost tens of thousands of dollars, he would not be able to afford it.
Even if he could afford it, he wouldn’t dare to say anything. If his wife found out about his secrèt stash, he was dead.
“It doesn’t matter. Don’t take it to heart. I don’t want this suit anyway,” Jackson said.
Mr. Lynch heaved a sigh of relief. “I’m relieved then.”
He talked about the characteristics of the mountains and also mentioned that this place was suitable to raise crayfish. A few families had already started to raise crayfish, but the scale was too small.
Jackson kept looking at the bonfire in front of Katerine’s house.
Katerine and a few women set up a barbecue rack.
They were so efficient that in less than half an hour, they had got all the ingredients for the barbecue, including vegetables. meat, fish, and prawns.
“Come on, let’s start.” With that, the women began grilling the meat.
They put the ready–made burning charcoal under the grill rack.
When William saw them use the tongs to pick up the charcoal from the bonfire, he pulled Vanessa to him in case the sparks would fall on her.
“It’s alright. I used to burn charcoal when I was young,” Vanessa said with a smile.
She leaned against William and felt warm in her heart and body.
“Come on, Mr. and Mrs. Hawk, try the barbecue. The ingredients are fresh and uncontaminated.” A villager enthusiastically handed the roasted meat, fish, and shrimp to William and Vanessa.
“Thank you!” the couple thanked him in unison.
The villager also handed Jim some skewers. Jim was an easygoing person. He held a bunch of skewers in one hand and stood up. “Let me roast it. It’ll taste better if you roast it yourself.”
Seeing them set up a barbecue, Ronald and the other villagers were not to be outdone and also brought over a barbecue. rack. They quickly skewered the ingredients before starting to barbecue.
However, Jackson was not interested in barbecue at all. He looked in Vanessa’s direction and took a bite of the roasted meat mechanically
When it was almost 10 o’clock at night, the villagers all left. Katerine asked William and the others to go back to the house to take a shower and rest.
Jackson also got up and said, “Mr. Lynch, I’m a little sleepy. I’ll go to bed first. See you tomorrow morning.”
He was secretly looking forward to seeing Vanessa again tomorrow.
He knew there was nothing he could do now.
But he still wanted to see her.
He would feel less depressed simply by looking at her.
