Chapter 45
Chapter 45
Supposedly entangled in a public opinion frenzy. Elena Jones was all smiles as she held Jackson Foster’s mother, Sarah. She looked at Vanessa as if showing off.
Elena stood like a victor with pride written all over her face.
Sarah looked her way when she heard Elena call out Vanessa’s name.
Her brow furrowed when she saw Vanessa; she looked displeased. “Why are you in Lantrie City? Did you come because you know that Jackson is here?”
Vanessa looked at her indifferently before replying calmly, “I have been in Lantrie City for three years.”
In a mocking tone. Sarah said in a high–pitched voice, “Are you saying that Jackson came to Lantrie City because of you?”
“Jackson and I broke up three years ago. His being here has nothing to do with me.” Vanessa turned around and walked to another counter.
Her temperature would rise rapidly if she took another look at Sarah.
Sarah grabbed Vanessa’s hand, unhappy with the latter’s indifference. “Hold it right there.”
Vanessa quickly dodged.
Sarah became even more irritated. “Why did you do that? Am I a virus, huh? Vanessa Sanchez, tell me honestly. Did you secretly contact Jackson?”
Sarah recalled Elena hinting that Jackson rarely touched her recently. Without overthinking it, Sarah felt her daughter–in–law was not proactive and did not care enough for her son.
Now that she ran into Vanessa, Sarah was convinced she was the vixen who secretly seduced Jackson.
Men were wired the same way. They could not see the person closest to them when a vixen was in the picture.
Sarah could not figure out why Jackson wanted to transfer the family business to Lantrie City in the first place. She knew the reason now; it was all because of Vanessa Sanchez.
“I didn’t contact Jackson. Not in the past, not now, and not in the future!” Vanessa made herself clear impassively. Sarah’s baseless accusation did not amuse her.
Vanessa’s tone of voice further infuriated Sarah. She growled, “Vanessa Sanchez, who do you think you are? Is my son not worthy of you?”
“What happened, huh? What are you doing?” Madison Hawk rushed over after her call when she saw Vanessa surrounded by
two women.
She overheard Sarah bullying her daughter–in–law as she approached the trio.
She said sternly but smiling, “Madam, you’re right. No ordinary man is worthy of Vanessa, whatever the heck his name is!”
“What the Sarah glared at Madison, hopping mad by now.
Madison’s refined elegance made her even more upset. She adjusted her mink coat and asked bluntly, “Who are you?”
Judging from Madison’s bearing, Sarah assumed she was some rich man’s wife. No matter what, she would surely paled compared to the Foster family.
The Foster family was presently the wealthiest in Estain City. The market value of the Foster Group was among the top five in Lantrie City.
Jackson Foster had familiarized himself with those in charge of the wealthy families since he expanded his family business to Lantrie City. He was treated with deference in the business world.
“I am Madison Hawk,” Madison introduced herself graciously.
Sarah thought for a moment. She had never heard of her name.
Then she glanced at Elena.
The latter shook her head, indicating she did not know her either.
Sarah was relieved.
She had instructed Elena to come to Lantric City to inquire about the rich men’s wives in the city.
In fact, Elena told her yesterday she had attended a banquet with Jackson in Lantrie City and had acquainted most of the wealthy ladies present. Madison was not one of them.
If she were not at the banquet that day, she would not be from the same echelon of society. Therefore, she had nothing to worry about as far as Madison was concerned.
Chapter 45
She lifted her chin and said, “I’ve never heard of you.”
Madison was not upset. She held Vanessa’s hand and said, “It doesn’t matter if you haven’t heard of me. Let me formally introduce my daughter–in–law, Vanessa Sanchez, to you. I don’t care what grudges you had in the past. It’s in the past, and 1 can’t undo it. But I will return the favor to whoever bullies my daughter–in–law in the future. Whoever scolds her will be scolded in return. Whoever slaps her will be slapped twice. That’s all I have to say: I hope you have taken every word I said. seriously. Vanessa is officially under my wings now.” Then she turned to Vanessa and said, “Let’s go, my dear.”
Madison pulled her daughter–in–law away.
Vanessa was so touched that she became all ernotional.
She did not expect William’s mother to defend her like this.
Vanessa initially thought Madison wanted to show her the luxury goods to hint that they were on different social levels and that she was not worthy of the Hawk family.
She did not expect Madison to mean what she said and took her shopping for real..
Madison did not know what was on Vanessa’s mind all this while. She acted because she saw someone bullying her daughter–in–law.
She patted Vanessa’s hand and said. “My dear, I know you had a hard time in the past without anyone to back you up. Therefore, you were weak, understandably. But in the future, you must stand up on your own. You must fight back if faced with injustice. William will be on your side, and so will 1. The Hawk family has your back from now on.”
“Thank you, Mom. Vanessa was shocked that “Mom” slipped out of her mouth so effortlessly.
She had not said the “M” word for many years.
Vanessa’s foster mother, Shannie Lenard, ran away with the housing fund when Danny was two years sold.
From then on, Vanessa, Danny, and their father depended on each other.
The term ‘Mom‘ was foreign to her.
But now that Vanessa said it out loud, she felt it was the most natural thing to do.
“Be tougher in the future, my dear. I’ll buy you a bag; Let’s go!” Madison took her by the hand to buy a bag.
But Vanessa did not want it.
Madison insisted, “In the future, you must adapt to this lifestyle. Money is fortune and needs to circulate to flow smoothly. When it flows, we will become richer. Also, men work hard so their wives can spend their money. The more money the wives spend, the more prosperous their family businesses will be.”
Madison was suddenly overcome with sadness.
She had been in love with William’s father since they met.
Her husband doted on her and loved her. Even though Madison was fifty, he indulged her like a young girl.
Unfortunately, he worked too hard and went against her advice to take good care of himself. He subsequently died of a heart
attack.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Vanessa noticed Madison’s sudden change in mood.
The latter quickly composed herself; she sighed softly. “It’s fine. Vanessa, I wish for nothing more than to see William and you happy. You’re a loving couple; enjoy your lives. Do things in moderation, and don’t work so hard. Take good care of yourselves.”
“Yes, we will,” Vanessa said.
“Okay,” Madison nodded. Then she pointed at a bag on the shelf and said to the store assistant, “Let me take a look at this bag.”
She subsequently picked out two bags for Vanessa and placed them on the counter.
“I want this bag. Wrap it up.” Just then, Sarah walked over with Elena and said arrogantly.
The store assistant was in a difficult position. “I’m sorry, Madam. Mrs. Hawk has reserved this bag.”
