Chapter 42
William Hawk helped Vanessa change her phone number and took her shopping after that.
Although Vanessa said nothing to William, he could read her mind and did not ask about changing her phone number.
He thought the best way to overcome a failed relationship was to start a new one quickly.
He practiced what he preached and adapted well, it had begun to show results.
After going on a blind date and marrying Vanessa, William transferred all his feelings to her. He had only one mission in life now to love Vanessa.
Now he could calmly face Tracy Yost, oblivious to her betrayal for leaving him.
William took Vanessa to the largest mall in Lantrie City.
He picked out clothes, shoes, and bags for her.
When Vanessa refused to accept his gifts, William would remind her the new Mrs. Hawk needed to look the part.
Vanessa had to accept them out of obligation as William’s new wife.
She was no fool either. Vanessa could tell William had put in much effort to select the gifts for her. Looking the part as Mrs. Hawk was secondary.
Since they met, William had been good to Vanessa; she appreciated his genuine kindness.
She saw a men’s clothing shop and pulled William along. “Let’s go take a look at men’s clothing.”
William smiled. “Are you buying some for me?”
“Mmm. Vanessa nodded.
She had not given him anything yet.
Vanessa wanted to gift him a piece of clothing to express her gratitude.
She would use her own card to pay for what he chose.
“Pick one out for me then,” said William as they entered the store.
Vanessa took a good look at William. He was handsome, refined, and tall. He would look good in anything.
However, the white sweater he wore on their blind date impressed Vanessa the most. He looked clean and stylish.
It was December now, and sweaters were not enough to keep warm. William needed something thicker when he went out.
Vanessa had her eyes on a white down jacket.
She quietly looked at the price; it was close to 3,500 dollars..
“It’s so expensive!” Vanessa gasped.
However, she was willing to spend that much to buy him a gift.
The store assistant complimented her when he saw Vanessa had picked the down jacket. “You have good taste, Miss. Your boyfriend is so handsome; the jacket will look good on him. Let him try it on.”
“I’m her husband, William corrected him.
The store assistant was embarrassed and immediately smiled and said, “Wow, you’re married. You look young and compatible. A perfect match!”
“Thank you!” William said smilingly.
Vanessa handed the jacket to William. “Try this on.”
William went to try it on.
William walked over in his white down jacket, his hands in his pockets. He smiled and asked Vanessa, “How do I look?”
“It looks fantastic on you.” William’s excellent bearing made him look good even in a down jacket.
“Wrap it up,” William and Vanessa said in unison.
Then the two looked at each other and smiled.
William added, “Buy some clothes for Dad and Danny too!”
The store assistant was enthusiastic when he heard that they wanted to buy more. “Sir, Madam, look at these clothes. The selection is suitable for people in their forties or fifties. They’re smart looking and keep you warm.”
Chapter 42
Vanessa tugged at William’s sleeve and whispered. “The clothes here are too expensivel”
Although Vanessa loved her father and brother dearly, she could not afford such expensive clothes at her current salary.
Buying a down jacket for William was to repay his kindness for helping her. It was Vanessa’s way of expressing her gratitude,
William could read Vanessa’s mind, knowing she was unwilling to spend his money.
He was not worried, though. Vanessa could take her time to adjust so that she could soon spend his money with a clear
conscience.
He laughed. “I know a place where the quality of clothes is value for money. Let’s go there to take a look.”
“All right.” Vanessa’s eyes lit up.
She stopped William when he was about to pay for the down jacket. “I’ll pay for it; please let me.”
William smiled and let Vanessa swipe her card.
He realized that Vanessa’s kindness and gratitude were part of her DNA. She had evidently not moved on from her last relationship and still had feelings for someone else. Yet she could distinguish between the present and the past and was. adamant about repaying William.
Vanessa would not buy such expensive clothes for her dearest but did not bat an eyelid when paying for Willaim’s jacket.
He thought of a saying that described what a sensible woman was like. She would not take advantage of others and was always mindful of repaying someone else’s kindness.
She would rather be aggrieved at any time for the good of others.
Often, such sensible women were taken for granted.
“Was it the same with Vanessa? Was she let down in her previous relationship due to her sensibility?” William wondered.
“Let’s go.” Vanessa said after paying the bill.
William held her hand, and their fingers interlocked.
Let bygones be bygones. He would dote on her in the future..
William then took Vanessa to buy clothes for his father–in–law and Danny.
Vanessa instantly felt less pressured by the affordable prices in the clothing store. She chose two jackets for her father and Danny, respectively.
“Are we going back to the hospital now?” William asked.
“Mhmm.” Vanessa replied.
Both carried armfuls of shopping bags when they left the mall.
William wanted to carry everything, but Vanessa would not hear of it.
William then drove to the hospital with her.
They left all their shopping in the car and only brought gifts for Danny and his father into the ward.
When they arrived at the door, William and Vanessa heard voices inside.
They looked at each other in surprise.
William wondered why the voices sounded so familiar.
Keith Cooper opened the door in his white coat and walked out just then. He was all smiles. “Hey, bro, go in with Vanessa!”
“Who’s here?” William asked curiously.
“Your grandfather and mother,” said Keith.
Keith was nervous initially as he eavesdropped while pretending to tend to Henry Sanchez. He sneaked a peek or two at William’s grandfather and mother occasionally. He was relieved that they behaved usually and chatted happily with Henry.
Vanessa’s back stiffened when she learned that William’s grandfather and mother were inside.
The overbearing sense of inferiority complex and oppression made her unable to move.
She recalled Jackson Foster’s mother throwing the manipulated photos at her face three years ago.
“Calm down. Vanessa. My grandpa and my mom are very kind people,” William whispered in her ear.
“Mhmm, I’m not nervous.” Vanessa tried to stay calm.
“Let’s go in, then,” William said.
Chapter 42
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his hand tightly.
William looked at her with puzzlement.
Vanessa pulled him away from the ward.
William followed her without a word.
Vanessa looked at William intently and pleaded, “William, my father’s health isn’t good. Please find an excuse to get your grandfather and mother out of the ward. We can talk through things outside if needed.”
Vanessa was not afraid of being humiliated like three years ago, but she feared her father would be hurt. He could not withstand any emotional impact at this point.
William could read Vanessa’s mind at a glance; he held her hand and said, “Don’t worry, my mom and grandpa know about our marriage.”
“No matter what, please get them out of the ward, okay? We can go to the café across the street and chat.” Vanessa panicked.
She feared that if they found out William had married someone as poor as a church mouse, they would be unable to hold back their anger and lash it out at her face–to–face.
Vanessa did not know William came from a prominent family when they met. Otherwise, she would not have agreed to register their marriage.
Knowing she was an ordinary woman, Vanessa only wanted to live the life of an ordinary person.
However, Vanessa doubted William’s grandfather and mother would believe her.
Just like Jackson Foster’s mother, who did not believe Vanessa truly loved her son, she assumed Vanessa wanted to marry into a wealthy family for the lifestyle of the rich.
“Okay.” William stroked Vanessa’s head lovingly; he was about to call his grandfather and mother.
Just then, Madison Hawk emerged from the ward and gazed at Vanessa.
