Chapter 30
Chapter 30
The word “belittle made Vanessa’s heart ache. She used to be an optimistic and proactive person, unafraid to love and hate and willing to take risks. She had once given her all for love. But reality left her deeply wounded.
She was in pain. She was scared. She accepted her fate. All she desired was a simple and peaceful life. She feared the ups downs in life. She hated it when she and the man she loved were forcibly separated due to mismatched social status, even though they had just spent a beautiful day together.
and
After all, she was human, flesh and blood, and truly felt pain.
“On our wedding day, you told me marriage is a lifetime commitment.” William looked into Vanessa’s eyes.
Vanessa’s lips trembled, but no words came out. At that time, she thought he was just an ordinary person like her.
William continued, “On the day Tracy came to find you, you and I made a promise to protect our marriage together.”
Vanessa’s nose tingled, and she quickly turned her head away. William gently turned her face back, forcing her to look at him. He called her by her full name. “Vanessa Sanchez, don’t underestimate yourself. You are excellent.”
Vanessa felt a stab in her heart. She locked eyes with William and insisted, “William, we come from different social classes.”
Initially, Jackson had also told her that she was excellent. He said his grandfather and mother would accept her because of her excellence. She had worked relentlessly to prove her excellence. In the end, all she got was Jackson’s mother telling her to have some self–respect. What Jackson’s mother said didn’t matter. What mattered was that Jackson broke up with her, which ruined all her efforts and love. The words “wealthy family” were a painful reminder for her.”
William looked at Vanessa, seeing her stubbornness, persistence, and insecurities. He leaned down and kissed her. She didn’t respond at all. He called out to her, “Vanessa, do you remember what we did just now?”
Vanessa’s body stiffened. She had dreamt of a stable marriage, but she knew they were from different worlds. William had given her love and warmth, and she had already taken on the role of his wife in the past few days, only to realize that he was a top–tier billionaire suddenly. She didn’t dare to indulge in such warmth, fearing it would lead to the same irreparable
situation as before.
“Have you ever thought that it’s unfair for me when you say we should break up?” he asked again.
Vanessa replied. “You have many options. You can choose someone better.”
How could it be unfair for a wealthy person to be in a relationship with a poor person? She had been in a relationship with Jackson for several years, but with just one breakup, he erased all his memories of her from his life, leaving her immersed in pain. And then, he quickly moved on with Elena. They joined forces, and their family business flourished.
But what about Vanessa? She moved to a different place with her family and worked tirelessly for their livelihood. Through this struggle, she gradually realized that a poor person didn’t deserve love.
William asked, “Have I treated you well?”
“Yes,” Vanessa sincerely replied.
“Then why do you want to break up with me?”
Vanessa felt a bit uneasy in her heart and said, “Our backgrounds don’t match.”
Breaking up now was better than being asked to have “self–respect” by his mother someday in the future. She wasn’t afraid of being humiliated, but she feared that one day William would casually say to her, “Vanessa, let’s break up.”
“Have you made up your mind?” William asked.
“Yes,” Vanessa said, feeling relieved as she spoke. Some things were never meant to be hers, and it was better for her to give up early to avoid geuing hurt.
“Well, since we’re still husband and wife for now, could you please do me a favor once more?” William asked.
“Just tell me what I can do for you, and I’ll definitely help.” Vanessa replied. William had done her a great favor, and if she could help him, she would do her best.
Just try your best to maintain our marriage for a year. After a year, when I secure my position as the CEO of Hawk Group, and if you still want to leave me, I will respect your decision,” William said.
To William, Vanessa was like a book that he could fully understand. And he would feel great joy and happiness every time he read it. Just by looking into her eyes, he could see through all her thoughts.
William remembered the day he saw her ex–boyfriend at the hospital and heard her calling that man “Mr. Foster.” Suddenly, he understood everything. Vanessa had been hurt by wealthy people before, so she became sensitive, resistant, and afraid of being hurt again. She just wanted to be alone.
That was fine. William decided to give her some time, and he would help her escape her nightmare. This year, he would show her through his actions that her efforts would be rewarded and that her kindness was more valuable than her social
status.

“But you know, I will be your burden. I will only hold you back.” Vanessa panicked. “No one knows about our marriage now. If we break up, you can marry a wealthy girl, which would be more advantageous for you to secure the CEO position.”
William chuckled. “My cousin already knows about our marriage. He is my biggest competitor. If I get a divorce now, it will allow him to attack me.”
Vanessa fell silent. If she had known earlier, she wouldn’t have registered their marriage.
William looked at Vanessa’s expression and his lips curled up. He gently touched her face and asked, “Will you be with me through this year?”
“You have no idea how adorable you are, Vanessa,” William said inwardly. She was a girl who had no complicated thoughts. no weighing pros and cons, and no greed for money. She only wanted to protect herself and help him. He had only extended a helping hand to her father once, but she was willing to give her all to help him.
With a wife like her, what worries could he have?
“My background may subject you to ridicule,” Vanessa said.
“No one dares to ridicule me!” William declared. He turned over and lay flat, pulling her toward him and under the blanket. He placed his arm under her head and turned her around to face him. “Just like tonight, be calm and confident. You are the
best.”
“I…”
“Help me.” William looked at Vanessa intently.
Vanessa agreed, “Okay.” She could be confident and composed most of the time because she didn’t rely on others for her meals. She never spent others‘ money.
What she feared was the humiliation from William’s family and his abandonment. But if she were only to help him, then there wouldn’t be a problem. This year, she wouldn’t invest her emotions. After a year, she could still walk away unscathed.
Besides, if her father saw them doing well, it would improve his mood and aid in his recovery.
The doorbell rang.
Vanessa was about to go to the door, but William had already gotten up. “I’ll get it,” he said.
Someone had delivered a makeup remover set. William took the package and took the opportunity to change the password for the suite to their wedding anniversary. He placed the box in the bathroom and asked Vanessa to remove her makeup. Then, he fetched her pajamas.
He had already arranged spare formal attire and Vanessa’s everyday clothes in the afternoon in preparation for the banquet they were attending.
Vanessa took the pajamas and went to take a shower and remove her makeup. When she came out of the bathroom, she felt a
bit awkward.
Finally, she mustered up the courage and climbed onto the bed, lying on the other side of William.
William quietly curved his lips, shifted to the side, and embraced Vanessa in his arms.
Instinctively, Vanessa wanted to struggle.
William reminded her, “Don’t move. Just sleep well. Otherwise, I might not be able to control myself.”
Vanessa immediately closed her eyes in fear and pretended to sleep.
William looked at Vanessa’s natural and innocent face, his lips curling into a wild smile.
She looked cuter the more he looked at her.
Outside.
Keith appeared in the banquet hall dressed in motorcycle gear, his hands in his pockets, looking suave.
He guessed that Tracy might still be in the banquet hall.
Keith scanned the area. Suddenly, he spotted Tracy sitting on a sofa in the northwest corner, tapping away on her phone, typing a message.
Keith immediately walked over to her.
