Chapter Launch
As Josh waited for his clones to arrive, he reviewed what he was planning on releasing to the internet. There were two videos.
The first was footage from the day he destroyed the alpha site, from the morning, to when all the feeds cut out. This would help the people realize that he wasn't the mindless killer they probably assumed he was.
The second, however, was a favorite video of his. It was of Professor Mishkin, who was the genius behind Evo-toys. He liked it, because it showed that he had at least one person who understood him.
12 minutes later...
After almost all the clones had gathered, he had set them about recreating a shape. It was one that had been obsolete for years, but it was a challenge he could throw his mind into.
The shape was very similar to the old V2 rockets, as it was only designed to launch them into space. Then, He was planning on using small, concentrated explosions to move him towards Mars. Why take an old rocket, when you can build your own?
As the rocket was almost finished, he wiped the sweat off his brow, and turned around to see the crowd of drones that were watching him.
After turning him away, they wanted to record his misery?
However, instead of anger, he only felt intense mental exhaustion. Social interactions weren't his strong point, and he really couldn't take trying to adapt to the new rules around him anymore. It was probably best that he left anyway.
The people who had gathered in the central square of the city were shocked at two things. First, the speed a which the rocket was being built and fueled. A rocket that large would take at least a month, and he was just making it in a few minutes, like a construction toy.The second thing was the multitude of clones. There had been clones leaving the power station, the hospitals, the police departments, the stores, the rivers. Anywhere where there was a grouping of people, apparently there was at least one clone there. And all these clones had been, for want of a better word, teleporting towards the site the rocket was being built on.
The drones sent by a rather enterprising team of college students had arrived a while earlier, and they were showing everyone in the square what was happening.
They saw the clones pile themselves into the topmost part of the rocket; they saw the clones that where pouring two freezing liquids out of their hands into the funnels on the side of the rocket, and they saw that there was a cat who appeared to be being lifted aboard.
All of this seemed to be the tragic end to this hero's career on Earth. There were those in the crowd who were blinking away tears, whilst others jeered at the miserable face that the most active of the clones had.
However, the whole crowd started shouting when they saw that a vehicle was rushing towards the site.
Josh looked up, registered the vehicle as a new type of armoured car, and carried on directing his clone into the rocket. Whoever it was, they could wait.No humans had stood up for him on that stream. Not one positive vote had been on that stream. Not one. If they wanted him gone that badly, he would leave as fast as possible.
After the first shot though, he turned around to see the General firing an energy rifle at him. Josh rolled his eyes, and simply walked forwards.
With energy whistling past him, Josh calmly walked forwards, and the General tried to retreat at the same pace. However, retreating whilst facing, and firing, at an enemy is not as easy as walking forwards.
Once he was within 10 metres, Josh stopped advancing. He had driven the General out of the launch radius, so Josh felt that he had no more work to do. Glancing at his HUD, he saw that the rocket was ready, and the prime time to launch was coming up within the next minute.
Seeing the timer countdown, he grabbed one of the drones, and drew it close to his face. Once it was there, he gave a watery smile, and stated,
"When I leave, I will send 2 videos onto the internet for all too see. One will be a true account of what happened to make me kill that many people. It is the unedited CCTV footage from that day."
Josh flashed a proper smile here, and laughed. "Not even the General has seen these files in 10 years, so you're welcome, world."
His face growing serious again, he continued.
"The second will be the video that helped me through many trials. It is from Professor Mishkin, my … Designer? Creator?"
He paused to scratch his head.
"What ever he is, He's the only one who would take time out of his schedule to listen to me. Sadly, he was transferred to another facility, and I never heard from him again.
So, to the world. May you all be as understanding as the Professor."
So saying, he bowed, right as the rocket fired its engines. Then, he turned and jumped onto the tail fins, so he was carried upwards as well.
The crowd watched in awe as the rocket sliced through the atmosphere on it's way to the red planet. However, even before the rocket became invisible to the naked eye, an alert appeared on all the devices in the crowd, and indeed, across the world. The alert was in the mother tongue of the owner of the device, and it described the videos again, and gave the address to the website that was hosting them.
After the website was thoroughly checked for viruses, the President of Unified Terra opened the video files. They played as well as could be expected, and did not contain any malware, so he decided to allow public access to the videos.
