Chapter Benson 293
Chapter 293: The Burden of Fate
Claire had her reasons for seeking out Benson, even though their potential relationship had long since faded. Despite the lost
opportunity, her familiarity with him still held a lingering obsession in her heart.
She knew Benson hadn’t explicitly forbidden her from visiting him, so she continued her frequent visits. Every time she arrived at the Australian branch of the company, the employees treated her with great courtesy, as if her presence were completely natural.
In fact, some of the employees had started to speculate about her status, with some even asking Benson’s assistant, Joseph, in hushed tones, “Is Miss Claire Benson’s girlfriend?”
Joseph, being a sharp individual, always responded with a smile, never giving a definitive answer–neither confirming nor denying it. This ambiguous attitude gave Claire the impression that she still had a chance, and she grew increasingly fond of Joseph, appreciating how he always seemed to respect her.
One day, when Claire arrived at the company, she noticed Joseph carrying a stack of documents and Benson’s phone, moving in and out of the conference room.
She frowned slightly, feeling puzzled, and asked, “Is Benson really that serious? He doesn’t even take his personal phone into the meeting room?”
Joseph nodded, smiling as he replied, “Mr. Benson is very
professional. He never takes his personal phone into meetings. If there’s an urgent matter, I write it on a note and pass it to him, and he handles it based on priority. It’s a regular part of our work routine, and everyone’s used to it.”
As they were talking, Benson’s phone suddenly rang. Joseph picked it up, and upon seeing the caller ID, his expression shifted slightly
before he respectfully answered, “Miss Yvonne.”
The voice on the other end was somewhat subdued. “Is Mr. Benson still busy?”
“Yes, he’s in a meeting,” Joseph answered truthfully.
There was a moment of silence on the other end, and Joseph could sense the tension in the air. After a brief pause, Yvonne finally spoke, her tone hesitant and heavy.
“Assistant Joseph, could you please tell Benson that Im pregnant? What does he plan to do about the baby?”
Joseph froze, shock flashing in his eyes, and his lips trembled slightly. “Wh–what? Okay, I’ll have Mr. Benson call you back right away.”
After hanging up, Joseph stood there, his mind in turmoil. He knew this was significant news, especially given that Benson and Yvonne were already divorced. This couldn’t wait, so he immediately reported.
it to Benson.
Meanwhile, after ending the call, Yvonne felt as if all her strength had drained away. She slowly lay back on the office sofa, closing her eyes as she gently touched her abdomen, her heart filled with an indescribable mix of emotions.
She had been delaying telling Benson about the baby, lacking the courage to confront him, but she knew she couldn’t avoid it forever.
Time seemed to stand still as Yvonne’s thoughts swirled chaotically in her mind. She had thought she was mentally prepared, but when the words finally left her lips, the sting was far sharper than she had anticipated.

He carefully picked up the blanket next to the sofa and draped it over her.
Yvonne seemed to sense the warmth, her body relaxing slightly,
though her brow remained furrowed as if she were still struggling in her sleep.
Watching her sleep, Jeremy felt a flood of complex emotions.
He sighed softly, sitting down in the chair beside the sofa, quietly keeping vigil over her, not wanting to disturb her slumber.
In just a few short days, it seemed as though a chasm had formed between them, separating their worlds.
Jeremy knew that Yvonne must have gone through a lot recently. She appeared thinner, and the confidence and radiance she once had seemed to have been worn away by some invisible pressure.
Yvonne stirred after a short nap, opening her eyes to find Jeremy sitting across from her, engrossed in a book.
His expression was calm and gentle, as if the whole world had come to a standstill in that moment.
She blinked, startled, and quickly sat up, hastily straightening her clothes and hair in an attempt to mask her post–nap disarray.
