Chapter Benson 246
Chapter 246 Unfulfilled Promises
Benson sat in the dimly lit room, reflecting on
Yvonne’s words.
She was right; he had never truly owed her anything.
He pondered the choices he had made over the years, wondering why, after finding her, he continued to dwell on their past misunderstandings and
conflicts.
His mind was filled with questions–why hadn’t he, upon discovering Yvonne, let go of those trivial disputes and misunderstandings?
Why hadn’t he simply told her that he had been searching for her for so long and that discovering she was his wife brought him immense joy?
He had always believed the person he was looking for was far away, never realizing she had been by his side all along.
His search, his waiting, and his conflicts seemed to have caused him to overlook the most important thing–her feelings.
Wasn’t the joy of finding her enough to erase these insignificant misunderstandings and secrets?
He realized that in his pursuit of fate, he had let her slip through his fingers, torturing himself with
countless small misunderstandings.
Yvonne lay in bed, her mind unable to find peace.
Even though she had made up her mind to divorce, discussing these matters brought her deep. discomfort and suffocation.
She felt trapped in an invisible cage, the emotional pressure overwhelming her.
She had once believed she could face these issues
easily.
But in reality, her emotions were still stirred by the entanglements with Benson.
She wondered if her relationship with Benson was
doomed to be unsuitable.
Fate’s tricks had always kept a veil of mist between
them.
No matter how hard she tried or how much she
attempted to mend things, the outcome always
seemed to deviate from her expectations.
She felt like she was engaged in an endless tug–of- war with fate, each effort leaving her more
exhausted.
As she was lost in these thoughts, a soft little arm suddenly wrapped around her waist.
Surprised, she turned to see little Emma standing by the bed, her big eyes blinking at her.
Emma’s eyes were bright in the soft light, and her small face, resembling her mother’s, made her look especially cute.
“Why aren’t you asleep yet?” Yvonne asked softly, her voice tinged with concern.
Despite her complex emotions, she couldn’t help but show her gentle side toward the little girl.
Emma shook her head, her eyes innocent.
“I couldn’t sleep. My mom watched me fall asleep, but I just pretended. I didn’t expect you to come, Aunt Yvonne.”
Her voice was clear and sweet, with a hint of
mischief, as if her innocence was just to catch the
attention of the adults.
She gave Yvonne a gentle hug, her little arms expressing worry. “Did Uncle upset you again?”
Yvonne felt a wave of tenderness in her heart at
these words.
She looked down at the little girl, a soft smile crossing her face.
Even with all the turmoil in her heart, she couldn’t hide her affection for this child.
Yvonne gently sat up, leaning against the headboard, holding Emma tightly in her arms.
The warmth of the little girl’s body brought her some
comfort.
Her mood remained heavy, but in the presence of Emma, she felt willing to turn her worries into gentle confessions.
“It’s not that he upset me,” Yvonne said softly, her voice gentle and tinged with a bit of a choke.
“I just feel uneasy. Actually, I love your uncle very much. I feel like I’ve done everything I could…”
Her voice trailed off, as if revealing a secret that was
hard to express.
Emma listened intently, her big eyes bright, and her small arms hugged Yvonne tightly, as if trying to offer comfort with her tiny strength.
“Aunt Yvonne, have you been having a hard time?”
Yvonne shook her head slightly, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes.
“When you really love someone, it doesn’t feel hard. Even if the other person doesn’t love you back, just thinking about them can feel sweet. But afterward, there can be some bitterness too.”
She gently stroked Emma’s cheek, trying to use her emotions to warm the child’s heart.
“Emma,” Yvonne whispered, “I’m going to tell you a secret, okay? But you can’t tell anyone, alright?”
“I promise.” Emma nodded, her eyes full of curiosity and seriousness.
Yvonne smiled, her gaze softening.
She lowered her head and spoke softly, “Did you know there was a time when your uncle couldn’t see?”
Emma nodded, her face puffing up in a playful expression.
“I liked playing with him, but he always said I was annoying. When I stayed with him too long, he’d say, ‘ Emma, stay by yourself for a while; my eyes are tired. ‘I didn’t realize he was pretending…”
Yvonne couldn’t help but laugh, her smile filled with warmth and nostalgia.
She patted Emma’s hair and sighed, “In front of others, he always seems so cold, but with family, he’s really just a big kid.
He would pretend not to care about anything just to keep his little secrets hidden, but he’s very good at hiding his feelings.”
Her smile gradually softened, tinged with a bit of sadness.
“When your uncle was in the hospital, I saw it
firsthand. He could be very tough and even put on a show.”
Her voice carried a hint of nostalgia and reflection.
“We both liked each other,” Yvonne’s eyes flickered
with pain as she looked out the window, as if reaching back into the past
She gently ran her fingers through Emma’s hair, finding some solace in the touch.
“At that time, we made plans to go to many places
he wanted to visit, and I was looking forward to going with him.”
Yvonne’s voice was soft and sorrowful, “We
imagined seeing the ocean together, climbing
mountains, even visiting places he always dreamed
- of.
But then he went abroad and never contacted me again.”
Her eyes grew distant, with a faint glimmer of tears.
Yvonne tried to recall that forgotten past, as if
searching for some release in the depths of her
memory.
The dim light in the room reflected a faint sadness in Yvonne’s smile.
Her hand gently stroked Emma’s hair, the motion as tender as if soothing her own heart.
“Not long after, things at home fell apart.” She continued, her voice carrying a touch of sorrow.
“I thought everything would get better, but before long, everything became so blurry. Many things I couldn’t sort out. The promises we made just faded away.”
Emma felt especially warm in Yvonne’s embrace. Her little hand gently held Yvonne’s sleeve, offering comfort in her own way.
Her small body pressed against Yvonne’s, radiating a warmth that Yvonne could feel.
Yvonne sensed this intimate touch, and her heart began to calm.
In this quiet night, though her emotions were
complex, the closeness with Emma brought her a sense of comfort.
The only sound in the room was the ticking of the clock, echoing in the still night, making those past
memories even clearer and heavier.
Yvonne gently closed her eyes, trying to find a moment of peace in this quietness.
She knew that the promises and dreams of the past had now turned into unachievable illusions.
Her thoughts were entangled in endless memories, and the peaceful atmosphere before her couldn’t mask the turmoil in her heart.
She remembered those days, the smiles, and the tears intertwined, becoming an indelible part of her life.
