Behind The Alpha Book 8 ADAM

Chapter 17

(Chapter song ‘The Resistance’ by Skillet)

ADAM

“ADAM!”

“GET TO THE TRUCKS!”

“THEY'RE COMING!”

I run behind a truck, slam my back on it and crouch down. I'm out of breath and check my pack. “Who has clips?”

“I’m out.” Fredricks answers.

“Here.” Riley hands me and Ferguson some clips.

I reload and move to the hood of the truck. I stand and peak over. “Shit.”

A large group Dires and Vamps walk out of an alley between two crumbled buildings. They’re shifted in human form and all are soaked in blood. I can smell their hunger. My mouth waters for a taste, but I know it would be suicide.

“What do we do, Spencer?” Preston asks over my shoulder.

I turn and lower myself. I hold my weapon and look to my friends. “Mitchell. Can we contact base from the other side?”

“Possibly. Provided the way is clear. If it’s not, we'll have to fight to get to it.” He says as he rubs his blonde hair.

“There’s not that many. We can take em.” Fredricks growls. She grips her gun like she’s wringing its neck.

I shake my head. “No. That will only gain the attention of the others. We need to contact base and get them out here.”

Raven sits on his ass. “If I can get to Puck, I can get the eliminators. I can take them out five at a time with those.”

“One mission at a time.” I say low. “Let’s get out of this one first.”

“I could shift. Create a distraction while you get out.” Ferguson says.

I smile at her. “That’s a nice idea angel, but they’d see right through it.”

I look around at the destroyed buildings of Axelridge. The stadium is a few blocks up. If we can make it there then we can fortify it and wait for back up.

“Anything on the links?” I look around my friends.

They shake their heads.

“We're still out of range and no ones answering the Comms.” Riley says.

“How much magic you got?” I ask.

He pulls out a red crystal chained around his neck. It’s glowing light is dimming fast. “Not much. A day maybe two. Unless I can get to Phoenix.” He says as he stuffs it back in his military shirt.

I nod. “Any word from Bourne?”

Ferguson lowers her head. “No.” She chokes.

I grab her hand. “We'll find him. Don’t worry.”

She nods and puts on a brave face.

“Ok. We'll reload and then we’ll…”

Just as I say that, the truck shakes like something hit it.

We look up and a vamp leans over the roof. His bares his fangs and hisses loud. I do the same and hiss back louder.

“RUN!!”

We scramble to our feet as the street fills with the battle cry of Vamps on our asses.

“TO THE STADIUM!!” I order.

The vamps fly down the street, cling to walls as we run full tilt down the sidewalk.

Ferguson unfurl her wings. She flies like a rocket, grabs a vamp off the wall and throws him down the street. She lands a hand on the back of another and it glows white. The vamp screams and falls. She hits a few more, but the cries from city say it’s fruitless.

“ANGEL, THERE’S TOO MANY! LETS GO!” I yell to her and she nods.

She swoops over head and lands in front of us.

Fredericks and I turn and fire on the them. A few are thrown back after being hit, others dodge the bullets.

“SHIT! I’M JAMMED!” She growls.

“MOVE!!” I yell to her.

Vamps try to grab at us and we hit them back with our bullets and guns. The ground shakes with their growls and I feel their anger in my head.

Our legs and chests burn as we run for our lives.

We round the courtyard of the Hammers stadium and bust through the front doors.

“ELECTRIC PERIMETERS, NOW!” I say as Ferguson and I slam anchored devices into the walls on either side of the door.

They glow blue and a bolt of electricity connects them. We run to 10 foot intervals around the outside walls of the stadium as the noise of bloodthirsty Vamps reaches just on the other side.

One by one, we drive the connectors into the concrete.

The ones we placed earlier, zap and fry as vamp try to get into the building.

“IRON POWDER!” I yell as I pull out a sac from my pack. I join Ferguson and help her. “The base of every window and door, ok?”

“Ok.” She says.

I sense her fear and rub her back. I never wanted her here, but angels can be too stubborn for their own good. Especially when they’re in love.

“Preston. Fortify that skylight.” I point up to the high ceiling.

“On it.” He holds his pack, power jumps into the air, shifts to his lycan and his claws dig into the ceiling. He anchors connectors into the roof all around the skylight and they cross the glass connecting in the middle. He jumps down and lands on his feet.

He pulls out track pants and slips them on.

The Vamps continue to throw themselves at the building outside as I take a deep breath and try to come up with a plan.

“Mitchell. Can you make the bridge from in here?” I ask as I walk up to him.

“I can try. I don’t know. It might bring the building down on us.” He says.

I look up at the cracked ceiling. It’s very possible the force of the bridge could destroy it.

I rub my nape. I have no choice. “Ok. You’re going to have to go alone.”

“What if I run into Falcon?” His brows raise and his lips fall.

I eye him. “Don’t.” I place my hand on his shoulder. “Stay low and keep to the woods. Try not to shift. Use it only when you’re not going to be seen. There’s no Kitsune over there. Make your way to Phoenix and cross back over. Tell them our location and to bring everyone.”

He shakes his head. “God, I wish I got teleportation. What the hell am I supposed to do with Astral projection that only works for a mile?” He grits as he connects with my eyes.

“That’s a question for Inari, buddy.” I shake my head and clap his neck. “Now, go. Hurry.”

He takes a step to the right and disappears with a loud canon shot.

“What should we do?” Riley asks.

I look over all my friends. My heart pounds in my chest with a growing fear. “Survive.”

****

The sounds of sharp growls and clashing bodies brings me back to reality.

I wince as my ears ring and my head pounds.

I look around wildly and realize I’m still in the battle. My mind struggles intently to understand what I just saw.

I lift my head to see Lefu battling my father and other unit Alphas.

Just as I was about to get up, I’m pummeled by a rogue. I grab his fur and hold him back as he tries to bite my head off.

My face turns demonic and my lycan head grows out of my jackets.

I open my large muzzle and sink my teeth into either side of his mouth. I bite his nose off and spit it out.

He jumps away, writhing in pain and shock. His eyes widen as I stand and bring my boot down on his skull, crushing it.

My head turns to Lefu as the pieces come together. I know now.

I run at him and pull him out of the dog pile. I blur out and drag his ass out to the desert. I call all my strength and throw him as I stop.

He rolls across the sand and struggles to stand.

I snarl my lip as I step to him. “You killed them.” I growl darkly as my eyes flash green and flare at him.

He eyes me as he rises to his feet. “You remember.”

“You killed them all.” I clench as I feel my heart start with a fury I’ve never felt before.

He straightens himself. “What are you going to do about it, besides die yourself.” He smirks.

The images fill my mind and the emotions fill me. They’re raw and painful.

My anger rises and I lunge at him with a bellowing growl.

He braces himself as we connect. The ground shakes as our bodies hit the dirt.

He kicks me off and I land on my feet. I run at him and swing a fist out. He blocks and lands a fist on my ribs. I throw another blow and connect with his head.

He wraps his arm around my waist, picks me up and throws me across the sand. I stop on my stomach, punch the dirt and rush to my feet.

I throw punch after punch at him and he returns. We’re matched in strength because my emotions weaken me.

I let out a fury filled growl and land a fist to the side of his head. He stumbles back and I howl to the sky. My lycan rips through my clothes and leans to him. He roars and his claws extend.

Lefus eyes glow and he shifts to his black Lycan.

We run at each other and quake the earth as our large, heavyweight bodies collide.

He wraps his arms around my head and threatens to break my neck. I drive my claws into his side and he screams.

I break free and land a foot on his chest. He flies backwards and I jump into the air. I land on him and try to claw his face. His jaws snap and his growls tighten my chest.

Shoving his head to the side, my canines find his neck. He screams and drives his claws into my side. My lycan screeches in pain and pulls back off him. He drives his body into me and slams into the dirt.

He shifts, holding his bleeding neck. “Now that you…remember…you know…this only wastes time…you don’t have.” He pants.

I shift and lift myself onto my elbows. My chest heaves as hold the hole in my side. “I only…need a single…moment.”

He narrows his eyes. “Until then.” He breaks into a vamp run and disappears.

I groan as I get up. I’m exhausted and need to heal. My lycan is in control as my vamp sleeps.

I also now realize why this time is so different. After the last of my friends fell, I made it my mission to never endanger lives again.

They’re deaths were on my hands. I thought we would be successful until Lefu was handed the blade.

But between Grahams light and Deacon triggering the memory, I now realize, I can’t do this alone.

I need my friends. Even if they aren’t the ones I started this with.
