Chapter 16
WES
“YOU OPEN THE GODDAMN DOORS NOW!!”
“NO! WE CAN'T HAVE WHAT’S IN HERE, OUT THERE!!”
Luke is all up in Bastian’s face. The guys look beaten and they are definitely fighting the moon just as hard as I am. Thankfully, the Lunas are all locked in the side office. Though it will only be a matter of time before their scents start to irritate.
“OK, LOOK!...” I scream at them. I’m trying to keep calm. I take off my t-shirt and wipe off my sweat coated face and stick it in the back pocket of my jeans. “You keep this inside, the fucking wolves are coming out. You don’t let these mother fuckers out to run, they will tear this building apart and everything in it.”
Bastian’s shoulder length, blonde hair is down and his button down is open. He leans on the opposite end of the table. “They are dangerous and contained.” He looks at me with a snarl.
“B. You’re sentencing everyone to death with nowhere to hide, eat or drink. We can’t survive in here.” I warn.
“Wes. We can’t endanger the outside with highly skilled wolves. Each is a walking tank, man.” Grey says as he wipes his brow with his bare arm.
Bastian shakes his head. “No. We need to stay here.”
I eye him. “What are you saying? Guys. You know our fucking wolves don’t want to be in here. You want this? What’s wrong with you?”
Jayson’s leaning on the wall, shirtless. “Nothing. We’re protecting the territory.”
“Yeah. What if the shifter is just waiting for us out there. You want to just hand him a bunch of victims?” William scowls.
“No…I just…” I push off the table and pace, rubbing my forehead.
I look around the room. “Where’s River?”
Mica shakes his head. “We don’t know. He was out with Anna and we haven’t seen him since.”
“GPS says he was headed ta White Rock. He was on da phone before we lost it.” Gideon says as he leans on a chair, rubbing his head.
Luke leans in. “All I know, if I have to fight this any longer, I will not be held responsible for kicking all your asses.” He raises a brow and turns around. He paces around his spot by Bastian.
“Look. I get the moon’s affects are getting harder to fight, but from what we know, the symptoms get weaker as the blue moon gets closer. We just need to survive long enough for rational thought to return.” Bastian holds his hands up.
I rush him. “Rational thought?!” I point to the door as I take big steps around the table. “It’s a fucking bloodbath! On every goddamn floor! People are dying, Bastian. Beating each other to a pulp! Open…the fucking…doors!”
“I think I can help.” Thea squeaks.
The Alphas turn to her. Bastian eyes her. He runs his thumb across his bottom lip. “And how…can you help?” He says in a seductive tone. I see that look in his eye. The same look I’ve been seeing all day. We need to get out of here.
I aggressively grab his chin, turn his head from Thea and put my face in his. “Knock off the tone. She’s mine.” I growl as our noses almost touch.
“WES!” Grey gets up and pulls me off him.
Bastian snarls at me as he rubs his jaw.
Lucius stands and steps in front of Bastian. “We are not leaving.” He narrows his eyes and growls. He gives me a look like he’s challenging me to make a move.
I collect myself as best I can and back off. “Thea. What do you mean?” I ask without removing my eyes from Lucius.
“There’s a tree. In the forest. It has properties that I think can help this.” She plays with her fingers nervously. “I can go there and come back.”
“No. You're not going anywhere. Tell me where it is and I’ll go.” I side eye her.
“I…I can’t. It’s…sacred.” Thea meets my eye.
I shake my head. “You’re not going, Thea. You might as well tells us.”
“No, Wesley. I’m sorry, but you cannot know where it is.” She insists.
I leave the guys and walk over to her. “Why? What’s so special about it?”
“It has properties. I can’t know if this will help, but it’s true for a lot of things. I want to help.” She says in a meek, quiet voice.
I kind of get a weird feeling from her. I can’t put my finger on it. One things for sure, she’s not going alone.
“Then I’m coming with you.” I insist.
“No, Wes!” She defends.
“Why?” I cross my arms and glare at her.
She lowered her eyes. “You just can’t.”
“Thea, what aren’t you telling me…” I study her.
A loud bang came from the door.
“OPEN THE DAMN DOOR!!”
“It’s River!” Luke rushes to the door and unlocks it. River falls into it and Luke slams it shut before the men outside could force it open.
We all stand around him. Jayson kneels beside him. He’s bloody and beat up, but otherwise OK.
“Riv. Where’s Anna?” Jayson asks as River wipes the blood from his face and tries to catch his breath.
“At home…with Emily…” He looks all around. “Michael’s missing.”
“What do you mean?” Bastian asks.
“I was on the phone with him last night. The blood moon came in. The next thing I know, I hear some guy talking. I couldn’t understand what he was saying. It was in another language almost African, but older. Michael was talking to him in the same language. Mike doesn’t know any other languages.” He got to his feet. “I screamed for him. I heard him scream. When I got to the pack house, he was gone and his phone was on his office floor and there were bullets on the floor.”
He ran his hands through his black hair. His blue eyes staring at all of us.
“He was kidnapped.” Jayson states.
River nods. “It looks like it.”
“By what?” Grey folds his arms and furrows his brow.
“I have no idea. When I got to the pack house it was under lockdown. I don’t know how they got in or out with Mike. I came here. My car got jumped. I had to run. I’ve been surviving ever since.” He says.
I lean into the circle. “How did you get in?” I arch a brow.
He looks at me. “Airshaft.”
“Airshaft.” I repeat.
He nods.
“Where?” I ask.
“Tenth floor.” He supplies.
I turn to Bastian.
Bastian shrugs. “It’s possible some areas have been compromised due to the riots.”
I step to Bastian. “Open the doors. Let them out. Me and Thea will get the tree stuff.”
River steps beside me. “I’ll come with you.”
I look him over. “You don’t need to.”
“I know what it’s like outside. I can help.” He gives a little half smile.
I look to Thea who’s shaking her head no.
I turn to her. “We could use the extra protection. Rivers a good fighter and he knows the woods just as well as I do.” I rub her arms. “Baby, it’s ok. I promise.” I press my lips to her forehead.
She heaves a big sigh and nods.
I turn to the Alphas. “Once the doors are open, will run for the front doors. You guys back us up then run for the woods.”
“No. I’m not leaving.”
“Me neither.”
“Nope. Safer here.”
“No.”
“What the hell is wrong with all of you? We have an escape plan.” I glare at the them all. “Grey, don’t you want to get Mia out?”
“Like Jay said. We’re safer here. If you want to go out there, all the power to you little bro.” He shakes his head.
I cinch my brow together. That is not my brother.
River grabs my arm. “We don’t need them. We can do this faster with just us.” He says.
I look to him and Thea. “Open the doors.” I mumble.
Bastian goes to his desk and hits a panel inlaid in the top. He punches a code on the screen and the sound of the building coming out of lockdown reverberates from every corner of the building.
He raises his eyes to me. “Good luck.” He mutters.
I nod.
I grab Theas hand and walk to the door.
The Alphas prepare themselves. “We'll take the stairs.” I say quietly.
I hesitate and put an ear to the door. I hear growling on the other side. I close my eyes and say a prayer to God.
I suck in a breath and open the door. We all run toward the males in the hallway.
I skid up to a bunch of guys with River, Bastian, Lucius and Luke. We throw fists down and beat the men back. They come at us with full intention of ripping us apart. I don’t want to kill anyone, but I will if I have to.
I grab a guy by the hair and pants. I slam him head first into a wall. I’m climbing over people with the Alphas behind me. Throwing punches as I go.
“Thea!!” I look behind me. She’s punching her way out too.
“I’M COMING!” She yells.
River’s beside me. We both grab guys and give them lefts and rights and throw them behind us.
I hop over the last of the guys that are filling the hallway. One rushes me and swings. I flip him and slam my knee on his chest. I twist his arm and break it. He screams in pain on the floor. I stand and step over him.
“THEA! NOW!” I growl loudly.
Luke grabs the guy she’s fighting and she leap frogs her way over the fight. “Let’s go!” She grabs my arm as she runs.
We hit the stairwell with some of the Alphas behind us. We jump whole stairs all the way down to the first floor.
The lobby is even worse now. There’s more destruction, more blood and more bodies everywhere.
We’re immediately met with resistance when a group of ten men stop fighting each other and discover us.
Mica, William and Jayson go on the defense. They rush the guys and try to clear a path. William is tossing guys, but they’re coming back like boomerangs.
I’m fighting off two guys and Thea wraps her legs around one guys neck. She slams him to the ground and drives the heel of her palm right up his nose.
“THEA! FRONT DOOR, NOW!” I yell at her.
“I'M NOT LEAVING YOU!” She yells back as she kicks a guy in the chest.
“I’m right behind you! GO!” I head-but a guy and throw him.
She gives me concerned eyes and runs for the front door.
River was beating back as many as he could. I tried to help, but I was jumped by a she wolf. She bit my neck and I screamed, falling to my knees. Bastian ripped her off my back and threw her into several wolves behind us.
He turned to me. “WES! GO!”
I launch to my feet and grab River's arm. We make a run for it down the hallway, through the secured door and out the front door. Out of the hell of the security unit. We meet up with Thea who’s anxiously waiting for us.
I shift with Thea and River right behind me. I look back to see a gorgeous tricolor wolf. My wolf barks and she barks back. I look to rivers black wolf and we all sprint into the night.
Into the Falcon Ridge trees to find the thing that will save us all.
