Chapter 21
Ares POV
I could feel every inch and fiber of my body on the verge of slipping into that state of panic I despise so much.
I always prided myself on having control over my emotions and what I felt. I had trained myself from a youthful age not to allow my fear to rule and dictate me. I had taught myself to hide my emotions from others, but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that a day would come wherein that very aspect of control would be challenged.
"You smell of fear. Such a delicious aroma" Kronar uttered and inhaled deeply, closing his eyes in the process, as if to instill fear deeper into my core and I was so extremely ashamed to admit that it was working.
I had never been exposed to such violence before and although I frequently trained with our soldiers, I was still never allowed , due to my parents, to go into wars, thus never actually saw what was really out there. I wish I could say that was the reason I was not able to retaliate the night Kronar came to my cell, but when I realized what his true intentions were, I absolutely could not move even a single limb, and all I could do was stand there and be ready for what he was going to do.
"Kronar that's enough. You may leave now." The king said making Kronar smirk at me before he raked his eyes over my body and turned to leave the room.
"I'll be awaiting our training with anticipation." He said and walked out.Even as he had long left the room, I still could not turn my gaze away from the door he had walked out of.
"You will start immediately at dawn tomorrow. I have given Kronar complete permission to do whatever he deems necessary in order to unlock your powers." He said as he looked at me with a gaze that told me he was not about to deal with my shit and frankly speaking, I wasn't even sure what to do or how to react in this circumstance.
He looked at me for a second longer before he nodded at something causing me to look in that direction and see a very timid looking Orc bow his head. I hadn't initially seen him here when I entered but then again, it had been so dark I couldn't even see my own hand if I held it in front of my face.
The young Orc that looked as though he could not be a day older than fourteen years of age, walked ahead of me and opened the door, revealing a very pissed off looking Hybrid standing in the doorway with his nostrils flaring as he glared daggers at the man who was his supposed 'father'.
"I take it you are aware of the plan" The king, who still hadn't told me his name not that I even gave a shit, asked and smirked at the Hybrid who only glared at him, almost as if he found his state of anger amusing.
"You know what Kronar is capable of. How can you possibly think this is going to work? And beyond that, you know his methods of doing things. They're brutal and horrific and while they might have worked before, it won't work now." He said, causing the king to raise his eyebrow at him in return.
"And you're so sure about this after spending just a month with the prince? It seems as though you're letting something else cloud your judgment." He responded causing the Hybrid to stiffen at his response and lower his head almost as though that one statement alone had triggered something inside him, causing him to submit immediately.
"It's not about that. And you know it. I just don't want this to be a mistake and I know it will. I want this kingdom to be powerful enough to surpass all others just like you do. But this way isn't the right way." He said in a low voice so completely contrary to the tone he had used just seconds ago.
I looked between the two, who seemed to have completely forgotten that I was there and was speaking as though I was just a shadow or a fly on the wall.
"It's not up for discussion and to be quite honest, I don't really care about what's right and what's not. I will do whatever it takes to get what I want, and if that means sacrificing the prince for that, then so be it. He will be in Kronar's care as of tomorrow since I have sent him on an errand" he said and turned around to walk away, back to whatever dark hole he had crawled out of.
I turned and looked at the Hybrid who was looking at the ground like it was the most astonishing thing he had ever seen. He looked up and looked at the spot where the king had been standing for a brief second before he turned and walked away. I let out a sigh and followed him out.
He hadn't said anything all the way and neither did I, which only intensified the atmosphere right until we had reached his room, where he did what he always did.
Ignored my existence completely and went about his thing.
"Are you not going to say anything?" I asked as I leaned against the door and looked at him as he faced his back towards me.
"What do you want me to say?" He replied causing me to scoff back at him.
"I don't know, how about why you're such a suck up to your damn king, or should I say father? Are you that desperate for him to look at and see something other than his puppet?" I asked, and just like that, it was like a switch had been flipped.
He swiftly turned around and looked at me. His green eyes staring into my blue ones, and I could only imagine how he fantasized ripping me apart in his head.
"You think it's easy! You think I want this! I don't have a fucking choice!" He yelled at me making me raise my eyebrow at him.
"This is so much bigger than you could ever suspect. You think you're some hot shot just because you're a prince huh. That just because you trained in an army since you were a kid makes invincible. Don't fucking kid me! You have no idea what you're getting yourself into!" He yelled further making me just look at him since I had no reply to that because frankly, he was correct.
I was fucking terrified.
But I couldn't let that be shown and used against me. I might have not had a solid plan as yet but going around about to piss my pants at any given second didn't help my situation one bit.
I stood in my place, even as he walked towards me, so much so, he stood just centimeters away from me. His face almost touching mine. He leaned forward and rested his hands on the door, just above my head, staring into my eyes.
"Kronar is not like anyone you'd ever suspect. If you think what he wanted to do before was bad, you have no idea what he'll do now that he has no reigns. And the fact that you're so calm about it is pissing me off." He said as he leaned down further, the tip of his nose touching mine, and even then, I refused to back down and stared back at him.
"Why do you even care?" I asked and lifted my head slightly since he was a whole head taller than me.
He looked at me, not answering my question and just stared into my eyes, searching each of them for something he wasn't going to find, for I had learnt a long time ago to mask that. He looked at me a second longer, and I could have sworn I had seen his gaze drift down to below my nose though he quickly masked it and looked back into my eyes.
"I don't know. I really don't know. For once in my life, I have no idea what to do. It makes sense in my head, but actually doing what I think I should do makes me want to punch myself in the gut." He replied, caging me between his hands and the door.
"And what is it that you think you should do?" I asked in reply and watched his eyes travel to the very spot I thought I had imagined earlier, and leaned in a bit closer.
I could feel my heart hammering in my chest, pounding against my rib cage, and what surprised me was that is was so not the kind of beating I felt when I was afraid, but rather when I was nervous.
Why the fuck was I nervous?
I looked back at him, not moving, and realized that since the moment I had seen him, I hadn't been afraid of him. Confused yes, afraid no. It was like something in me just knew instantly that he wasn't like the rest. That he was different.
I felt the tip of his nose press against mine causing me to close my eyes for reasons I couldn't even begin to comprehend and felt his hot breath fan against my skin, when I felt something knock against the door causing me to jerk and him recoil from me as if he had touched something so blazing hot. He immediately took a few steps back causing me to clear my throat and take a step forward toward him which was a huge mistake because the next thing I knew, the door had banged right into me.
"Sorry. I heard Dad summoned you. What did he say?" Said a person whom I recognized as the Hybrid's sister.
"Uh, nothing much." He said and scratched the back of his neck, looking at everything else but me.
"What's going on here. Why does it feel like I interrupted something?" She asked with a smirk on her face causing my face to feel so flushed I was so sure it was the color of ripe tomatoes.
"Nothing. Get out." He said and pushed her out causing her to laugh as she looked at me and smirked before she turned around and walked out.
I turned to look at him, just now realizing that he looked just as awkward as I did if not more with the way he was avoiding looking at me at all costs.
"I'm uh, going out for a run. Don't get into trouble." He said to which I just nodded and watched him walk out the door, leaving me with a single thought on my mind..
What the fuck just happened..
