Beasts of Pennsylvania - | The Nature of the Beast |

Chapter 5

Davina had woken up in the guest bedroom feeling relaxed. She hadn’t expected to considering she was staying in the home of someone she wasn’t very fond of. She supposes Jackson and Charlie aren’t so bad. She would’ve been more put off by them if they had attacked her in some way as she did previously, but neither did. She got dressed before quietly exiting her room and sneaking downstairs. She found the kitchen and walked in, finding Eloise standing behind the counter at the stove. Eloise heard the sound of footsteps, making her look in the direction of the door and finding Davina.

“Oh, my dear! You frightened me! I was going to wake you at the same time my master wakes up.” Eloise said, making her way around the counter. She had found out yesterday about Davina sneaking in later in the day when she was told by Dean that he had no intentions of hosting, that they used it as a distraction. Eloise was a little upset, considering she hardly ever has the energy to cook anymore. But, she very well couldn’t share that with Dean. She felt she had nothing in her life, that her work was the only thing. And it was true. Because of that, she takes great pride in it. And despite being upset she was used, she didn’t want to hold it against the girl. Especially considering she’d be taking after her for a few days. After all, she was there guest.

“I couldn’t sleep any longer, I had to get up.” Davina said, examining the kitchen. She expected it to be a lot larger when she entered for the first time, but that was all she noticed before. Now, she could see the elegance the gothic kitchen had. No, she didn’t care for the beasts much. But, she couldn’t disagree that they had exquisite taste in interior design.

“And I was honestly feeling a little bad yesterday for tricking you. Although Dean didn’t know it was me he was offering the position to, he explained that you can’t carry on your normal duties any longer. I figured while I’m here, as a way to say I’m sorry, I’ll help you with your daily tasks.” Davina said. Eloise looked a little shocked as she made her way back around the counter to continue making what she had sitting on the stove. Her heart swelled at the kind suggestion no one had ever made before.

“Oh, dear. You don’t have to. You’re our guest here, that wouldn’t be fair to you.” Eloise responded as she shook her head.

“What I did to you yesterday wasn’t fair. And I’d really like to make it up to you." Davina said, making her way around the counter, taking the spoon that rested atop it in her hand. Eloise tilted her head to the side, sighing.

“Well, I suppose you can help me for just a few hours.” Eloise said, looking down at Davina’s choice of clothing. In the guest bedroom, there had been clothes for guests resting in the drawers, some that were rather nice.

“Oh, but I’d hate for you to dirty your clothes. How about I grab the spare maids outfit for you?” Eloise asked.

“That’d be perfect, thank you.” Davina said. Eloise gave her a small smile before heading off to go find it. Davina put the spoon in the pot on the stove, beginning to stir it. Footsteps came down the hall in the opposite direction Eloise went, startling Davina. She made her way over to the door frame, hiding behind the wall. She took the spoon, getting ready to strike when the individual walked in. The individual yawned as a way of making themself known.

“Those wooden spoons hurt like hell, so I suggest you don’t.” Catrice said as she searched through the fridge. Davina sighed of relief, recognizing her voice.

“Well, perhaps you shouldn’t scare me next time.” Davina said as she approached the stove once more.

“Your fault you got scared.” Catrice said, taking out a blood bag and stabbing a straw through it.

“So, word around is you might be a witch. Not that I care much, but if the rest of the beasts in the compound find out you are, they’ll hunt you down for even stepping inside these walls.” Catrice warned. Davina frowned, turning to face her as she stirred the contents of the pot.

“Why are you telling me this?” Davina asked.

“Just thought you should know. Trying to be kind to you considering you’re our guest. Though really I should be tossing you around like a bag of meat.. just like you did to me.” Catrice said as she sipped on the blood bag.

“You don’t mess with a trained hunter.” Davina said, staring Catrice down. A smirk tugged On Catrice’s face as she stepped closer to the human before her.

“Are you threatening me right now?” Catrice asked.

“I don’t know. Are you threatened?” Davina asked, quirking a brow at her, a smirk now becoming apparent on her face as well. Catrice scoffed before heading to the door.

“Whatever, human.” Catrice said, flipping her off as she walked out. Almost immediately, Eloise returned with the maids uniform.

“Here you are! There’s a washroom just down the hall to the right.” Eloise said. Davina gave her a small smile before heading that way. She changed into the grey dress with a white apron, looking at her appearance in the mirror once she was finished. Her lip curled as she looked at the length of the dress, hoping she wouldn’t be too exposed as she did Eloise’s tasks throughout the day. She exited the washroom and made her way back into the kitchen to see Eloise preparing trays of food. She turned to Davina’s direction, eyes widening as she saw her very exposed legs.

“It’s a very good day we don’t have to clean bedrooms today. Somewhere in the compound there are some... unfriendly beasts.” Eloise said.

“Oh, I’m not concerned. I’ve dealt with unfriendly men all my life. Though, this may be different considering they’re beasts and not men.” Davina said as she took one of the trays.

“Yes, very different dear. Much more dangerous. There are only a handful though, all the other beasts are very respectful of women. If any of them get out of hand, you just let Dean know. He’ll take care of it how he does best.” Eloise said as they entered the elevator and went up to one of the higher floor levels.

“And in what way does he ‘take care of it’?” Davina asked curiously. Eloise turned her head, eyeing her.

“I think you know, dear.” Eloise said before the elevator door opened. Davina wondered if Dean really would handle it that way if it were her being disrespected. While she hoped he would, she knew she didn’t need a man to ever save her in any situation, that she could take care of herself. She always had, and that would never change for her. No matter what man entered her life. Eloise lightly knocked on one of the double doors before them. She waited for an answer, an invitation to enter. Once she got it, she opened the door and motioned for Davina to enter. She did after a moment, holding one of the trays of food in her hands.

“What do you think you’re doing?” The individual asked tiredly. Davina stepped closer to see who the voice belonged to, finding out it was Dean. He sat on his bed with his hand in his hair, brushing it out of his face. He then stood up from his bed and approached her, his bare chest mere inches from her face.

“What does it look like I’m doing?” Davina asked, quirking a brow at her. She lifted the tray up for him to see. He sighed, turning away and heading back over to his bed.

“You’re our guest, Davina.” Dean said firmly.

“Nope, right now I am your maid. I have the uniform on and Eloise has already recruited me for a couple hours. So, take your food.” Davina said, as she approached his bedside. She held the tray out for him to take. He stared her down for a moment, not finding her serious. She shoved the tray a little further, hitting him in the mid chest area. He clicked his tongue, shaking his head as he took the tray from her and setting it down on his bed. He then looked down, noticing her attire, his eyes trailing to her bare thighs.

“What’s with the knife?” Dean asked, noticing the knife hidden underneath the garter belt wrapped around one of her thighs. She looked down for a moment before looking back up at him. She titled her.

“Don’t necessarily trust you or your beasts yet. It’s just a precaution.” Davina exclaimed. Dean hummed before turning away to find his pack of cigarettes. He took one, lighting it and taking a puff.

“Will that be all?” Eloise asked from the door frame. Dean looked over at her, taking the cigarette from his mouth.

“For now, yes. Thank you.” Dean said with a soft tone.

“Come along now, Davina. We have a few more rooms to visit.” Eloise said, walking down the hall. Davina eyed Dean up and down for a minute. Dean raised a brow at her, wondering what she was looking at. She’s be lying if she said she didn’t find Dean attractive. He was tall, much taller than her. He towers over her whenever he stands close. His skin is pale, almost like he hasn’t seen the sun a day in his life. His chest and arms are toned. Tattoo’s lace the entire upper half of his body. His eyes are an icy blue color and his hair is black. Strands dangle around his face, leading down to his cheek bone. He was quite the sight. She then noticed she had been staring too long. Eloise was long gone. She quickly turned away, her cheeks turning a shade of rosy pink. Dean laughed, making Davina cock her head in his direction.

“Oh, don’t flatter yourself.” Davina spat. “I just happen to appreciate the ink.” Davina said, crossing her arms over her chest. She wasn’t entirely lying. Though hers was hidden, she had some too. She appreciated body art immensely. She also appreciated what it could cover.

“If you say so.” Dean said, feeling amused. Davina noticed the twinkle in his bright eyes before finally stomping out of the room, closing the door rather loudly behind her. She angerly went down the hall to find where Eloise had left to. I wouldn’t be surprised if he were conceited, Davina thought. Though, she realized it was in a way wrong for her to think so. She had met many attractive people in her life, and some turned out not to be. She was only judging him because he laughed, the thought making her blood boil. She finally found the room. Eloise seemed to have waited for her.

“W-would you knock please?” Eloise asked, a hint of fear lacing her voice. Davina frowned at her.

“Are you afraid of whose behind this door?” Davina asked. Eloise looked around, seeing nobody in sight. She then leaned closer, whispering to Davina.

“Not every beast is as kind to the servant as the king is.” Eloise whispered.

“If whoever behind this door treats you with even the slightest bit of disrespect, I’ll kick their ass.” Davina assured her before knocking on the door. She heard the invitation to enter, making her open one side of the door. She then took the tray, kicking the door open further.

“Rather skimpy, human. I didn’t think that was your style.” The voice said, sounding amused. Davina walked in further to see Charlie standing in front of a chest of drawers, pulling out clothes and tossing them onto a chair.

“And I may have let you off easily the first time you laid a hand on me, but I can guarantee you that next time I won’t.” Charlie said in a low voice, warning Davina. She glared at him before roughly setting down the tray on a table nearby, not caring that she wasn’t being careful.

“Duly noted.” Davina said with a sour look on her face. Charlie turned to her, pouting his lip before making his way over to her. She mentally groaned, hating that he too was attractive. His hair was dark brown, already gelled back for the day. He was a little more tanned than Dean was and his eyes were hazel-ish green shade. He wore a loose, white tank top but Davina could see that he was much more muscular and toned than Dean. Charlie had a sleeve of tattoos as well as a single tattoo on his other arm from what she could see. And he wasn’t as tall as Dean, but he still towered over her as well.

“Get rid of that look, you don’t want to have fine lines on that beautiful face of yours so early in life.” Charlie said smoothly, staring down at her. Davina didn’t listen, the look remained on her face. Charlie chucked before turning away and walking over to his tray. He took some fruit that rested on the tray, taking a bite out of it before waving the two of them off.

“That’ll be all, ladies.” Charlie said. Davina rolled her eyes before turning away and exiting the room. She shut the door before making her way down the hall with Eloise at her side.

“Just one more dear, then we can get started on other things for the morning.” Eloise assured her as they approached the last door. Davina knocked, waiting for a response. When one didn’t come she went ahead and opened the door. Eloise quietly panicked. She never had done such thing in all of her time working for Dean. She never did with any of those who permanently resided in the compound, and never did with those who visited. And she certainly didn’t with one of the co-leaders. Davina then took the tray, walking further into the room. She noticed the room had been much darker than the pervious ones. Both Dean and Charlie had the curtains pulled back. In this room, they weren’t. Davina felt around for a table. Once she did, she carefully place the tray before making her way over to the windows. It was still rather dark out, but enough light peeked through the curtains for her to see well enough to find the window. Once the made it there, she pulled back the curtains, hearing a groan from beside her. She turned to see an unfamiliar individual lying on their stomach and face turned away from her. He too had tattoos covering his skin. She then made her way over to the other window and did the same with the curtains. She pulled them back enough to see it was Jackson laying in the bed. He groaned once more, opening an eye to see who it was pulling back the curtains. He wasn’t expecting to find Davina standing there with her hands on her hips, impatiently waiting for him to notice her. His eyes flicked down to the shortness of the dress for only a minute before finding Davina’s eyes, an annoyed look swirling in his eyes. The intenseness of his eyes gave her an urge to retreat. Then she remembered who the hell she was and crossed her arms, tilting her head at him.

“What?” Jackson spat. Davina raised a brow at him. The few times she had met him, he wasn’t rude, at least not like this. She hadn’t known him to talk so viciously before.

“It’s morning, Eloise made you breakfast.” Davina answered.

“Who?” Jackson questioned, feeling only slightly confused.

“The maid.” Davina said, Jackson made a noise, indicating he understood. He didn’t move. He only laid there and shut his eyes once more. Davina turned to look at the door, not seeing Eloise in sight. She turned back, unsure of what to do. She was sure he was busy today. A co-leaders work never truly being done. She stayed silent for a moment before deciding to speak once more.

“You gonna get up, or what?” Davina asked, attitude lacing her voice. Jackson’s eyes shot open. He looked up at her, glaring at her. Davina barely had time to register what happened next. She blinked, and when she reopened her eyes she was moved across the room, back to a wall and a hand firmly placed around her throat. Her eyes widened as she looked up at Jackson. She mentally sighed as she realized he too towered over her. She couldn’t see much due to there being less light in the room. But, she could see enough for her to examine him. His chest and torso was completely covered in colorful tattoos. His neck and jaw line was covered as well. His hair was black and fell around his face as he glared down at her. He had gauges in his ears and three different lip piercings. He was much more pale than Dean was and his face was much more chiseled. His light brown eyes pierced into hers, making her grow increasingly uncomfortable. She was starting to get angry that the beasts she had met thus far were undeniably attractive. It annoyed her to no end and made it much more difficult to dislike their kind.

“I am not like Dean, understand this now. He may accept the way you treat him, but I won’t. Not even for a second. It doesn’t matter what way you look at it. You are below me. I am your elder by centuries, and I am superior to you. I will not take disrespect from a pathetic, inferior human like yourself.” Jackson stated. Davina nodded her head.

“Okay well, understand this; I don’t give a fuck.” Davina said carelessly, not breaking their intense stare. “I am not afraid of you. In fact, I’m not afraid of a damn beast in this compound. You may be able to lift heavy shit, run around at the speed of lightning, and have sharp ‘scary’ fangs, but you are in no way superior to me. You are not a king to me, you are not a God to me, you are nothing but a nuisance and a conceited bitch wasting my goddamn time right now. As are the other two freaks you associate yourself with. I will not treat you like you are higher than me, simply because you aren’t.” Davina continued, prodding his chest with her finger. Jackson bit the inside of this cheek, his eyes trailing away from her eyes down to her lips. They were curled up, indicating she was disgusted with him. He could feel a sense of familiarity. One he hadn’t felt in decades. He reminded her of someone he once loved. Someone he was betrothed to who was sadly taken away from him too soon. He finally looked back up into her eyes, finding not a hint of fear in them. Most humans would be, even his beloved was at some point. But, Davina never seemed to be. What happened to her that makes her so unafraid, Jackson thought.

“Your clan and my kind have been in alliance for a long time now. Tell me, why do you detest us so?” Jackson asked. He noticed something flash through her eyes. For a brief moment, he could enter her mind. He saw an unfamiliar woman with blonde locks. Scratches along her cheeks and blood splattered everywhere. She screamed out in pain, calling out Davina’s name. The image went as quickly as it came, and her mind became off limits once more.

“None of your goddamn business.” Davina said before shoving him away from her and storming out of the room. She shut the door and leaned against it, not finding Eloise anywhere in sight. She took a deep breath as she reached her hand behind her back, feeling a burning feeling from when she brushed up against the wall She winced, lightly running her fingers along the clothed area as she stared off in front of her. She was too distracted by her own worries of the mark on her back to notice the three beasts were now out in the hallway. Dean and Charlie stood to the left of her, unsure of what they came up on. Jackson stood outside the door, staring down at the girl, wondering where her mind went to. When she finally came to, she turned both ways to see the three staring at her. She scoffed.

“It’s impolite to stare.” Davina said. Well, she’s back now, Charlie thought, sighing afterwards. Davina then straightened out her apron before heading down the hallway to find Eloise. The three beasts gathered together, all watching her curiously as she exited down the hall.

“She’s a troubled young woman.” Charlie said, watching as she went. “Wonder what happened to her.” Charlie continued.

“Whatever it is, it’s none of our business.” Dean said as he began to head in the other direction.

“You aren’t even the slightest bit curious?” Charlie inquired.

“Even I’ll admit I’m a little bit curious.” Jackson said as he followed side by side Dean. Charlie ran, trying to catch up to them but fell behind.

“No, because if we find out what she is and find out what’s happening with our shipments, we’ll never see her again. And the sooner we find that out, the sooner we can make that so.” Dean said.
