Chapter Awake At Dawn: eight years ago 8
“You sure didn’t waste any time introducing yourself to my sister, did you, London?”
Julian’s sharp gaze narrowed on me, but I shrugged. “You were doing a poor job of introductions, so I took it upon myself to start without you.”
“I see that,” he said dryly, but then his gaze shifted to his sister, and his whole demeanor changed as he stepped around me and pulled her into a hug. “Hey, Gems. I’m glad you made it. I’m sorry about that. Juniper—”
“Don’t even start,” Gemma cut him off, pulling back to lift a hand in his face like she didn’t want to hear it. Julian’s mouth zipped shut, but I could tell it was painful for him to keep his thoughts to himself.
“Gemma, can I get you something to drink?” I interrupted, hoping to break the tension that clearly surrounded Julian and Gemma’s friend.
Julian shot me a look. “Look at you, being a fucking gentleman all of a sudden.”
I rolled my eyes. I might have a reputation as a flirt around campus, but that didn’t mean I didn’t have manners.
“Once again, I didn’t see you offering to get her anything.”
“It’s because he knows I don’t want his shitty beer,” Gemma laughed.
Her laugh was angelic.
Hell, she was angelic.
Julian sighed. “I actually bought you and Daisy a bottle of that wine you like. I’ll go get it.”
And then he walked away, leaving me stunned.
He must not be thinking clearly.
There was no other reason Julian would leave me alone with his sister.
But like hell was I going to miss this chance.
Gemma’s eyes followed her brother for a moment before they traveled back to me. She grinned, this time almost shyly, as she bit down on her bottom lip.
And now I was staring at her lips.
They were pink and full and…God help me.
“So you’re on the football team, too?” she asked, jerking my attention away from her mouth and how badly I wanted to kiss it.
Fuck me.
