“Nikolay?” I asked, frowning in confusion when I saw him coming to the auction hall.
“Mama!” My eyes widened at the sight of both Andrew and Bianca running toward me. I got down on my knees as I reflex and wrapped my arms around them, pulling them in for a hug.
“Baby, how are you? Both of you, how are you?” I asked, cupping their cheeks to look them in the eye.
“We are fine, mama.” Bianca said, looking at me. “Why did you not come to us? We were waiting for you. You did
not come.”
“I’m so sorry, baby. Mama will explain everything to you, but right now, I need to speak to your father. Can you please allow me that?” I asked, and both kids nodded. The fact that they have lost weight and the color in their eyes, the brightness in them, was one that I didn’t see. They had it when they were at home with me, and the idea of them being sad wasn’t one that I wanted to think of.
Nikolay looked at me and I shook my head in question.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, watching as a woman, a maid, approached the children. “You have a maid roaming around with them when you as their father…?”
“Are you going to question everything that is being done?” He asked, and I frowned.
“You expect me to just be quiet and drop the topic?” I asked, and he looked away from me. “Why did you bring the kids to the auction hall? You could have called me and I would have brought them to my place. As a mother would to her own children.”
“I don’t trust you to leave the kids with you…”
“I believe that as their mother, I am the one person that they know.” I said, stopping him. “And if I haven’t come for trouble, it is because I am giving you the chance to understand what it is to raise a child and be a father before I’ve taken them away from you.”
“Is that a threat?” He asked, and I shook my head.

“Not at all. But I think that you know that your mistress being in the house, and the kids being with her is not all legal, right?” I asked, and he looked away from me. “What did you come here for?”
“You sold Ashley the crystal chandelier.” He said, choosing to change the subject. Thankfully, by now, I already had enough pictures from the media to show my case.
“She believed them to be diamond. The woman couldn’t even spare herself a moment to read what she was buying. She just kept adding her bid.” I said, looking down at my nails. “But I have to admit, you are very generous with her. You know, for her to afford such an amount, I am amazed. It is only a shame that she couldn’t manage it well.”
“I came here to have the kids see you.” He said, and I shook my head, forcing myself not to show him what I was feeling. My heart was bleeding with each passing second away from them. But this wasn’t going to be something that I was going to show him. He wasn’t going to see me weakening because of what he was doing. I wasn’t going to give him that advantage. He wasn’t going to see me being weak.
“You came here to try and persuade me while using the kids to your own advantage. I will have you know that it is not going to work, Nikolay.” I said, and he frowned. “I will see my children and you can take them and leave. When in court, the two of us are going to talk about it in front of the judges and jury. I am sure that they are going
to be very curious to know how you managed to have a mother sign away the right to be with her children, especially one that you know would die for them.”
The memory
of me bleeding as my water broke. My children were pre mature, and I remember the fear that I felt knowing that. “Do you remember the fear that you had in your eyes when you heard of their situation?”
“Katerina, you are playing a game that you are not going to be able to get out of easily. I suggest that you tone it down and remind yourself of who you are dealing with.” He said, and I laughed.
“That was the Katerina that you wanted me to be.” I said, taking a step back. “Not the one that is standing in front of you. And trust me when I say, even your mistress saw what she is now dealing with, and those who were around are well aware of who she is and what she is. It is only a shame that you are going to be the one affected.”
“You can dream of that,”
“Your ego is going to be the end of you.” I said, and he raised an eyebrow. “I am going to make sure that you WISH that things would change. I am going to have you questioning yourself to the point where the one sentence that you will be able to make out is ‘what if?‘. And I am going to be sure to turn my back against you
and tell you to leave.”

“You are playing a difficult game, and it seems to me that you are the one boasted with ego.” He said, and I shook my head.

“You would wish.” I said, turning to my children, forcing myself not to tear up as I knew that I wouldn’t be having the chance to hug and kiss them as much as I wanted to. Just a little more time, I knew that it was all I needed. But seeing them in front of me made that time seem too far.
The one consolation that I had was the fact that I knew that I was growing stronger for them. I just hoped that
they would understand the importance of it for all of us…
“I work with facts, not dreams. And trust me when I say, you are not going to want to fight a mother over her children. It is in nature. A mother who is willing to fight for her kids would kill and die for them. And I am one who aims to fight.”
“Katerina…”
“I will see you in court. And I am sure that you are going to be giving the judge a wonder explanation as to why you chose to cheat, wouldn’t you, Nikolay…?”
